Categories
Please don't add tables like you have been to category pages. A single-sentence description alone is enough. --Abcboy (talk) 23:40, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- Apologies, it was more for the navigation from the home page. The links on the right hand side plonk you on a catagory page, and for someone new to Bulbapedia who was looking for the Trading Card Game or Video Games that might be a little overwhelming? So I thought a more obvious link through to the main page for each thing might be helpful? I'll admit I got a little carried away however, and I won't put any more on. - bthrussellUK (talk) 23:49, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
Date formats
Dates should be formatted in US date format (<month name> <day>, <year>). This is for consistency across the wiki and with the games, which also use American English. --Abcboy (talk) 05:01, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Proposed templates
Proposed templates in your userspace must be approved by the Editorial Board first, and then moved to the mainspace, before being put in use. Thank you.--ForceFire 16:09, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Since you’ve done Hulu…
I feel like Amazon Prime Video should be your next target, also expanding the US section to focus on what’s streaming free there, while leaving the sales stuff separately--KnightGalarie (talk) 15:22, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- Addendum: Where should a “Pokemon on Amazon” redirect go?--KnightGalarie (talk) 04:49, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- To be honest I think "Pokémon on Amazon" is a little too vague a concept. You could mean the merchandise, video games, anime or movies for sale on Amazon, so for it to link anywhere specific would probably be confusing to someone looking for something else. A redirect for the sake of a redirect isn't good, they're only for common misspellings, or when a particular subject doesn't have it's own page.
- Having said all that: I'm probably not the person to ask, an admin or someone from the editorial board is better placed to answer this - bthrussellUK (talk) 10:50, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
Making articles
Hey there, if you want to create an article, it's best to make it in your userspace first and wait for it to get approval from the staff to see if it's worth having. Your Viaplay article was of questionable notability since it doesn't appear to be an English service. Generally, English providers are notable as we're an English wiki, while anything relating to specific countries goes to their respective "Pokemon in <country>" article. Japan is the only exception. Your Viaplay article has been moved to your userspace and the staff will decide whether it's notable.--ForceFire 06:22, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, the reason I gave Viaplay an article of its own is because it spans multiple countries. That's why when I added ITV Hub and Now TV to the VOD template I didn't give them a page, as I was intending (eventually) to add them to the UK page (and DisneyNOW already redirects to the US page). - bthrussellUK (talk) 10:32, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- The redirect you claim existed did not when you made the claim, and does not as I write this--KnightGalarie (talk) 13:21, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- The redirect I "claim to exist" is the one for DisneyNOW on the VOD template. Click the link and it takes you to the Pokémon in the United States article. The redirects for ITV Hub and Now TV don't exist, as nothing has been written about them yet. I'm not sure the existence of redirects was the point of this discussion - it was about Force Fire letting me know I had jumped the gun with an article, and me explaining my rational for creating it... - bthrussellUK (talk) 13:33, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

Major changes
Hey there, if you want to make a major change, you must ask on the talk page if you can make the change and wait for it to get approved. Also, don't leave the change unfinished, try to do it all in one edit, or at least somewhat complete. Thank you.--ForceFire 15:34, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- Apologies, but I'm not sure what about my edit was unfinished or incomplete? - bthrussellUK (talk) 15:38, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- I meant the template itself, and you also seemed to have removed the other sections (like trivia) and the categories/interwiki links.--ForceFire 15:46, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- I'm really not sure what is happening - When I was editing the page on my PC on Chrome, I made sure to preview the page and it all looked fine, as it did when I submitted it, but looking on the history and comparing it to other revisions all the code seems to be missing after those first few cells of the first table. I'm really confused about where the disconnect is between what I submit and what actually appears on the website, and why when I looked at the page it seemed fine, but clearly others are seeing something different. As you can see, I tried to edit the spacing of the table and resubmitted the page to see if it fixed it, but it didn't so I undid again. Apologies for not understanding the issue at first, but the page seemed totally fine from my end, and I'm totally confused as to why it won't work! - bthrussellUK (talk) 16:19, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, so it turns out using a Musical Note emoji breaks everything! So I changed it for an image... Really sorry about all this! - bthrussellUK (talk) 16:31, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Like ForceFire said, if you want to make a major change, you should ask first.
...If a staff member reverts such a change and tells you to discuss it, you really shouldn't go about and try to do your edit again. (If such disregard proves to be a habit, you may face a temporary block.)
(I'll also note that when something breaks and you don't know why...again: ASK. Doing the same thing again (several times even) isn't gonna change anything.)
The more established a page is, the more strongly you should generally consider discussing a change. And all the more for pages that are major subjects on the wiki.
I will revert your edits to Pokémon anime. Feel free to start a discussion on the talk page. And, to be clear, please do not redo your edits without approval.
Thanks. Tiddlywinks (talk) 16:48, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Documentation template
I like how well you executed an idea I also wanted to execute: User:C.Ezra.M/Doc. However, I wanted to tell you some stuff about that:
- Using a table for the header
- I know, using a table for the header is quite good, but it's not a really good approach regarding modern web design standards. Bulbapedia is using it possibly because TTEchidna showed us, despite the infinite block, that using tables for site layout is easier than you think. However, "easy in theory" does not exactly mean "good in practice".
- Documentation header template
- A separate template, just to be shown on documentation subpages (but not on the main template page), could come useful when we have to specifically categorize template description pages.
- Categories and interwikis
- Because participation is important on Bulbapedia, a notice that all categories and interwikis are to be added only to the template subpage, in <includeonly> tags on the documentation subpage.
- Documentation page preload
- I also considered that: User:C.Ezra.M/Doc/preload. Basically a page template.
Having thoughts about all this? You can write them down here. --C.Ezra.M (T/C) 21:44, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
- The documentation template just needs to transclude the /doc subpage on to the template page, so that if template pages need to be protected, documentation can remain editable. The template you've created is great, but also way too much for what our wiki needs. The one you've created seems based on the system Wikipedia uses, and their templating system is massively more complicated than ours. As for tables vs div, on a regular website I would absolutely agree, but on MediaWiki, a basic three row table is a lot less code and easier for a new user to understand. We want to encourage new users to dive into templates more, and to do that we want to keep them as simple as possible. I also think categories can be included on the template page itself, having them on the sub-page is adding unnecessary complexity. I want to stress that what you've created is really good... It's just not what we need. - bthrussellUK (talk) 17:31, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
Templates
I see you and others working on new infobox templates, such as User:Rustle/Company Infobox and User:Rustle/Merchandise Infobox. However, I could try making single modules for infoboxes, so the infoboxes become much easier to code.
The templates that I'm talking about are:
- Infobox/title (can support up to two icons if needed, e.g. villainous team logos)
- Infobox/image (of course, add support for multiple images, but I think it could support both local and external images?)
- Infobox/data (the single unit of the infobox's data)
- Infobox/header (to group data into sections)
- Infobox/footer (for footnotes, and to close the infobox)
I know, it would require large amounts of re-coding many infoboxes, which could potentially induce server stress, but I think my initiative can work. I didn't make those modules yet, but I will make them soon. --Bfdifan2006 20:06, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
- While a great idea in principle, we currently have 130 templates in Category:Infobox templates, and many of these infoboxes are used on hundreds of pages. To change how they function would involve a massive amount of work that would need to be planned and co-ordinated way ahead of time. I think in the long (long long) term, there will probably be a review of templates and how they are built. But right now the main focus is on documenting what we currently have. I'd hold off on building any of these modules for the time being. - bthrussellUK (talk) 00:29, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Templates, again
- Could you remove the Portuguese interwiki from Template:AnimePokémonInfobox? Bulbapedia's articles (and templates) don't need interwikis to defunct wikis anymore, but they can still be at user pages.
- When Bulbapedia eventually gets to the review of how templates are built, do you think this could be an opportunity to install TemplateStyles on Bulbapedia?

Gameboy Printer Image Replacement
Hi! I have a computer generated screenshot of the Gameboy Camera Pokémon sticker that I'd like to see if it could replace the current picture for it which is a tad crusty. Could you help me with that? I just made my account and am not sure how to go about this! Shane-ooo (talk) 19:57, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, and welcome to Bulbapedia :) If you're on Discord, your best bet is to join the Bulbagarden server and drop the image in the "archives-and-images" channel so it can be reviewed. If not, upload the image to the archives and it will be reviewed by the admin team :) - bthrussellUK (talk) 20:09, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
Overwriting files
Hello, I would like to overwrite an already-existing image file with a more updated one, but I can't seem to have permission as it says "You cannot overwrite this file". How do I get permission to replace it?
The file in question is the real map of Japan with marks showing where the regions are, as I added Kitakami because it was missing.
Thank you. - Missing boi (talk) 10:47, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- You will need autoconfirmed status on the archives before you can overwrite existing files. This status is obtained automatically based on your contribution history, and cannot be given by admins. If you feel you have a better file than we have currently, your best bet is to present it on the #archives-and-images channel on the Bulbagarden Discord, where it can be reviewed. - bthrussellUK (talk) 12:40, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
Walkthough templates
I've noticed your pages /Pokémon/Walkthrough and /Walkthrough Party, and given their naming scheme, it seems they might be planned for use only on the walkthrough pages. I feel they could be used wiki-wide, as their color scheme is just a gradient-ed version of the current mainspaced template. → PikaTepig999 21:51, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- Those pages are just tests of functionality for the walkthrough pages. Once they're finished, I plan to update the existing templates to match - bthrussellUK (talk) 08:41, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
Pikachu Beach minigame in Pokémon Yellow: Impossible flip?
Hello :) sorry to bother you, but I have a question about the Pikachu minigame in Pokémon Yellow. I have been told do let a Bulbapedia administrator know about this, and I hope you'll be able to help me or enlighten me about this, or that this information will at least be useful to this wiki or the community. I've been playing Pokémon Yellow these past few days, and I wanted to end my playthrough by playing a bit of the Pikachu surfing minigame. Many sources online, including Bulbapedia, claim that there's a 500 point bonus in this minigame, for flipping 3 times, but not in the same direction. I, however, haven't been able to do it, even after hours of practice.
It's highly probable that I'm just terrible at the game, but I wanted to ask you if you yourself have ever done the 500 point flip or if you've seen anyone do it, because I can't seem to find any footage or talk of it online. Even the existing TAS of the minigame (though quite old) doesn't attempt to do it. So, in the end, does the 500 point bonus flip exist or not? Has anyone really done it? Is there proof of it somewhere, outside of data mines of the game?
Thank you for your time and have a great day!
LetalBladeNinja (talk) 22:19, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- SnorlaxMonster has had a look into this, and although the point scores for performing 3 flips exist within the game code, they haven't found any videos of anyone actually doing it. It remains unclear if it is actually possible to achieve three flips during the time Pikachu is airborne, or if it is actually impossible. Worth some further investigation! - bthrussellUK (talk) 22:34, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
- After opening up the Surfing Pikachu minigame in a TAS program, I was able to achieve the 500pt bonus. (Image here) It has to be off the tallest wave, and there have to be no obstacles in the way, i.e., you can't land on other waves. I think the reason no one has been able to do this is because it seems that there's zero frames of leeway, you have to do all three flips frame perfect or else you will land in the water and fail. Minibug (talk) 23:08, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
- As SnorlaxMonster noted in the Discord, image embeds from Discord will break soon, so I recorded the TAS I made and uploaded it to YouTube (video here) Minibug (talk) 09:25, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your answers and research, I've finally been able to do it! here is a short from yesterday's livestream showing me doing it it's really hard and precise, but it's actually possible! LetalBladeNinja (talk) 09:50, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Template:PKMN/1/Walkthrough
why was that template even created? i mean, it looks crudely done Thwackeyrabootdrizzile 05:05, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- There is a clue in the name; it is for use on the walkthroughs. What about it looks "crudely done"? - bthrussellUK (talk) 15:29, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Crispin Freeman
I think the English voice actor for Friede, Crispin Freeman, deserves his own Bulbapedia page (especially since he was one of the adapters for the English dub of the first few seasons of the 4Kids run). MrWii000 (talk) 03:41, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
- If you think an article would meet Bulbapedia's notability requirements, then please feel free to create it. - bthrussellUK (talk) 12:24, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Is Pokewalker a game?
I noticed that my edit grouping the Pokewalker with the side series games was reverted. But the template for the side series games has said that the Pokewalker is a side series game for three years now. (The title of said template considers everything inside it to be a game, because its titled "Side series Pokémon games", and the line Pokewalker is in states it to be an "Other game". If Pokewalker is not a game, then either the template needs a new name and a new section to accommodate side series entries that aren't games or Pokewalker needs to be returned to spin-off status. (It was removed from the individual spin off template at some point presumably because someone considers it to be a side series release.) What should be done to handle this classification issue? (Personally I prefer calling it a game on a self contained device, for many reasons including the fact the article has a "Gameplay and features" section, but any solution works I guess.) Adding pictures to archives
Hi, I’m new to Bulbapedia and I’m interested in adding three to four pictures to the archive to then use on a Bulbapedia article. I’m struggling to figure out how to upload the pictures I have to the archive. Are you able to guide me through this process? Thank you in advance for your time, Jonathan JWDL19 (talk) 20:16, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- Uploading new images shouldn't be too difficult, as a new member they would have to be approved my an admin, all you have to do is visit the archives, click Upload media in the tools section, chose the file you want to upload, add a summary, categories and licensing and click upload file--BigDocFan, Junior Admin Bulbapedia (talk) 20:22, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- As BigDocFan says, uploading to the archives is quite simple. We also have a guide you can follow :) - bthrussellUK (talk) 07:30, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
