A frantic old man runs into you soon after you board the ship. His granddaughter is missing, and he asks for your help before running off. At least she's on a ship, she could not have gotten too far. Before you start the search, check out your cabin at the west end of the hallway. It has a PC and a cozy bed to heal your Pokémon, which is good to have with all of these Trainers on-board.
You need to search every room to find the missing girl, but she can't have gotten too far.

Step out of your cabin, and check out those other rooms. The nearest cabin is empty, but the room beyond that has a Hiker. The northeast cabin is another empty room. Walk down the eastern hallway, past the stairs, and check the rooms on the south side. The room closest to the stairs is the grandfather's room. Room #6 hosts two battles, a {{tc|Pokéfan}} and a pair of {{tc|Twins}}. Cabin #7 is also empty, and the southwest cabin has a single {{tc|Firebreather}}.

You've inspected the cabins on this floor and still no luck, so try the lower floor. The sailor here blocks your way, asking you to track down another sailor for their shift change. The missing sailor is loitering around in Cabin #2, next door to your room. Beat him in a battle, and he'll head back to his post. A {{tc|Juggler}} is hunched over a trash can on the lower floor, but somehow has enough strength to battle. Battle past the {{tc|Sailor}} and the {{tc|Picnicker}}, and take the stairs in the southwest to get to the Captain's room.

You'll find the girl with the Captain; she's bored out of her mind, and is desperately trying to get the Captain to play with her. Once she realizes that her grandfather's worried about her, she runs off, and you both end up in the old man's room. For baby-sitting the little girl, her grandfather gives you a [[Metal Coat]], a power-up item for {{type|Steel}} and an integral part of a few trade evolutions. As soon as he's done talking, the speaker system alerts passengers that the [[S.S. This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Gold and Silver. This walkthrough follows the original Game Boy Color version, not Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
The guide for those can be found here.

Return to New Bark

Congratulations, you are now the Indigo League Champion! That major accomplishment means that you are the strongest Trainer in all of Johto and Kanto.

After the credits roll, you wind up back home in New Bark. Elm calls you shortly, asking you to visit the lab. Swing by to get the S.S. Ticket, a pass to board the S.S. Aqua. Fly off to Olivine and head to the harbor to catch the ferry to Vermilion City!

Fast Ship S.S. Aqua

S.S. Aqua, 1F
S.S. Aqua, B1F

Upper deck

Now let's check out the other cabins. Two of the other cabins on the north side are empty, while the one between them has a Hiker. On the south side, only one cabin is empty. The one nearest the stairs belongs to the grandfather. The next cabin has a PokéFan and a pair of Twins, while the last one has a Firebreather.

Lower deck

Still no luck finding the girl, so check out the lower floor. A Sailor blocks the way, and asks you to track down another sailor for their shift change. The second Sailor is snoozing in the cabin next to yours; beat him in battle and he will return to his post. There is a Juggler hunched over a trash can, and a Sailor and a Picnicker beyond that. Take the stairs in the west to reach the Captain's cabin.

Captain's cabin

The missing girl is safe and sound with the Captain, but she's bored out of her mind and keeps trying to get the Captain to play with her. When she realizes her grandfather is worried about her, she runs off and you both end up in the old man's room. For taking care of his granddaughter, the old man rewards you with a Metal Coat, a power-up for Steel-type attacks and an essential part of certain trade evolutions. The Captain announces over the speaker system that the ship has docked in Vermilion's harbor, and passengers are now allowed to disembark.

Vermilion City

Vermilion City

Vermilion City has not changed much over the past three years, though the land around Diglett's Cave has shifted a bit. A sleeping Snorlax blocks the path to the east, and the old man is still clearing the ground for construction with his Machop. Stop by the Poké Mart if you need more Potions or Poké Balls, then visit the Pokémon Fan Club on the west side.

Pokémon Fan Club

Listen to the Chairman's long story about his prized Rapidash, and he'll give you a Rare Candy for sticking around through the whole thing. Take note of the guy with the Clefairy; it's actually a Poké Doll that you'll need to return to its owner later.

Vermilion Gym

Vermilion Gym

VERMILION CITY
POKéMON GYM
LEADER: LT. SURGE
The Lightning
American!

The Vermilion Gym specializes in Electric-type Pokémon, so avoid using Water- or Flying types. Ground-type Pokémon are not only immune to electrical attacks, but their Ground attacks inflict double the damage on Electric Pokémon.

Lt. Surge has three Gym Trainers, but his hidden switches are broken, so you can walk right up to him. His Magneton knows the useful Lock-On-Zap Cannon combo, which inflicts serious damage and paralysis, and his two Electrode may explode without warning. If the battle drags on for too long, his Pokémon may be harder to hit thanks to Double Team. Use the TM26 (Earthquake) you found in Victory Road to sweep through his five Pokémon.

Vermilion Gym
The Thunder Badge

Defeated, Lt. Surge awards you the Thunder Badge, which gives your party members a Speed boost. Don't expect a TM to go with it; unlike the Johto Gym Leaders, only two of their Kanto counterparts give out TMs.

With Snorlax blocking the east road, the only way forward is north to Route 6.
