Red first appeared in the very first episode of the series where he gets called down by Professor Oak to see him in his Professor Oak. Along the way, he met Professor Oak's grandson, Blue, who was also going there too. Both boys race to Professor Oak's lab where he greeted them and handed out their Pokédex and Poké Balls. On a table, Red got to choose between a Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur, and went for the first choice while Blue went for Squirtle. Red began his journey afterwards.

Each young Trainer then began his journey.

Outside, he encountered a Pidgey and was unsuccessful in catching it. However, when a Rattata came by, Red was able to add it to his team. Red has his first battle with a Youngster where he tried to catch his Nidoran♀ but failed as they were not designed to capture a Pokémon belonging to another Trainer. Both Trainers use their first Pokémon and Red ends up losing the battle since his Charmander forfeited by wagging its tail.

The Youngster, now suspicious of Red, withdrew his Pokémon and ended the battle. The Youngster pointed to Viridian City as the location where he caught Nidoran♀, so Red decides to go there. On the way, he saw Blue and agreed to a battle. Both Trainers used their starter Pokémon, but Red forfeited after Charmander was pinned down by Squirtle's relentless Bite.

After the battle, Red became depressed and noticed Brock coming by. They have a talk with each other which gave Red his confidence back. Later, he arrived in Pewter City where he went to the Pokémon Center to talk to Professor Oak first. While there, he healed his Pokémon. Next, he went to the Pewter Museum of Science and did some sightseeing. When Red was about to go to the Pewter Gym to challenge Brock, a Lass and another person were standing there. As Red went inside, the two people watched them have their Gym battle, with Red becoming the victor after a long battle that took most of his team.

Since then, he was able to defeat Misty and Lt. Surge. Red arrived in Lavender Town where he heard about some ghost sightings in Lavender Tower. Red went to the Lavender Volunteer Pokémon House and met Reina, who was a helper there. Reina explained to Red about Team Rocket and their ways of handling Pokémon, and how a Cubone lost its mother to them. Hearing about Team Rocket's arrival at Lavender Tower, Red went there and was met up by Blue who heard about it too. A ghost then appeared and Red sent out his Charmeleon to deal with it. Before Red started the battle, Blue tossed him the Silph Scope in order to identify the ghost. Putting on the Silph Scope, Red noticed that it was Cubone's deceased mother. After Cubone reunited with its mother, Team Rocket appeared and Red battled their Koffing with his Jolteon. As Cubone assisted Jolteon, Jolteon was able to score a direct hit on Koffing, forcing Team Rocket to retreat. Red then went to Silph Co. where he was able to free the Pokémon that Team Rocket stole and was rewarded a Lapras. On the top floor, Red noticed that Giovanni had the Silph Co. president held hostage. Red battled Giovanni with Charizard and horribly lost.

Red returned to Viridian City to challenge the final Gym there. The Gym Leader was none other than Giovanni. Red had a rematch with him and even though Giovanni had the upperhand at first, Red was able to defeat him after his Hitmonlee tied with his Rhyhorn and Charizard defeated Rhydon. Red went to Indigo Plateau and managed to get through the Elite Four. He challenged Blue, who was the Champion at the time, to their final match where Red was able to defeat his Blastoise with Charizard despite the type-matchup disadvantage. Later on, Professor Oak came by to congratulate both Trainers and had Red come with him. Red was taken to the Hall of Fame, where he got to register his data as one of the Trainers who defeated the Elite Four and Champion.

The titanic battle was only decided when Charizard defeated Blastoise despite a type disadvantage. Soon afterward, Professor Oak came by to congratulate both Trainers and had Red follow him into the Hall of Fame, where he registered his data as one of the Trainers who defeated the Elite Four and Champion.

He continued his quest afterwards to fill up the Pokédex and caught more Pokémon. Red returned to Professor Oak's lab, where he found an injured Blue after Blue went to Cerulean Cave. Both boys compare their Pokédexes to see who filled up his collection more. Professor Oak then explained to Red about the Mega Evolution stones and their origins, as well as Mewtwo and Mew.

Professor Oak then explained to Red the Mega Evolution stones and their origins, as well as Mewtwo and Mew.

Red then went all the way to Cerulean Cave to find Mewtwo. As Red found Mewtwo, he decided to battle it and it defeated part of Red's whole team where Charizard ended up becoming the last one standing. During the battle, Red got his Charizard to Mega Evolve and was equal in strength with Mewtwo. After weakening it, Red threw an Ultra Ball at it and successfully caught it. He returned home where he had dinner with his mother, Blue, and Professor Oak before going off to catch Mew in order to complete the Pokédex.
Red then went all the way to Cerulean Cave to find Mewtwo. Upon finding the Genetic Pokémon, a battle commenced immediately. Mewtwo's incredible power overwhelmed Red's entire time, save for one: Charizard. Just as it seemed as if not even his prized Pokémon could keep up a battle with Mewtwo, Red managed to get Charizard to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X. Its newfound power allowed Charizard to weaken Mewtwo enough for Red to attempt capture. After several failed Balls, Red threw an Ultra Ball at Mewtwo and successfully caught it. He then returned home to a dinner with his mother, Blue, and Professor Oak. His work on the Pokédex not finished, Red ventured off to catch the most elusive of all Pokémon, Mew.
