The Beast That Devours the Sun (Japanese: 太陽を喰らいし獣) was the second legendary event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pair Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo. This pair could be teamed up with by completing the final story area of the event, A Shining New Friend.

This story was added to Legendary Adventures on on January 24, 2022.

First run

The event first ran from January 1 to 22, 2020. In this run, players could earn custom vouchers by completing single-player and co-op battles. Unlike most event items, these vouchers were not exchanged for coins at the end of the event period, as they were intended to be used during reruns of the event. Completing battles also allowed players to earn custom items to unlock moves, unlock passive skills, and increase the level cap of Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo.

In single-player mode, players could alternate completing story areas and event battles until reaching the battle "Solgaleo's Challenge: Part 2". The final story area of the event, A Shining New Friend, was not unlocked until the player had collected 100 Custom Vouchers 2. After completing this story area, players could access additional battles against Team Break.

Vouchers earned during battles could be exchanged in the shop for various items. Custom Super Vouchers 2 could be exchanged for limited-time ★ Power-Ups and various items used for unlocking sync pairs' level caps. Custom Vouchers 2 could be exchanged for Custom ★ Power-Ups for Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo and additional copies of this sync pair, but they could only be exchanged after completing A Shining New Friend.

Players could complete event missions to earn Gems. The missions had a wide variety of objectives, such as leveling up Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo, completing event battles with Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo on the team, and using sync moves to complete event battles. Each rewarded 30 Gems, and players were rewarded with 300 Gems for completing all 40 missions.

Second run

The event reran from April 6 to 24, 2020. The number of event missions was drastically reduced, being pared down to only 7 missions that involved leveling up, learning moves, and learning passive skills with Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo. Everything else was the same as the previous run. However, the status of event area info, first-time rewards, and items exchanged in the shop was not reset, meaning players who had completed everything in the initial run of the event could not earn anything new from the rerun besides event mission rewards and non-limited shop exchanges.

Third run

The event reran again from December 7, 2020 to January 4, 2021. In this run, the structure of the event was significantly altered. The custom vouchers were replaced with Legendary Prize Coins B, which could be used to draw items from a prize box pool. If the grand prize was drawn from the prize box, players could advance to the next prize pool. The grand prizes in the prize box included 3★ Level-Up Manuals, co-op sync orbs, 5★ Scout Tickets, a 3★ Tech Move Candy, a 4★ Tech Move Candy, and a Strike Move Candy Coin. Extra Prize Coins were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.

Area info also differed from the previous two runs. The single-player battles against Team Break did not return. The co-op battles were reworked into two additional single-player battles that were unlocked after completing A Shining New Friend, which was now unlocked immediately after completing "Solgaleo's Challenge: Part 2". As Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo could now be powered up using regular sync pair items, their custom items could no longer be obtained as battle rewards.

The event missions were completely overhauled. A 1★ medal was added as an event mission reward for completing A Shining New Friend, while the other event missions awarded Gems and 3★ Level-Up Manuals. These missions involved completing battle areas in the event a certain number of times.

Players could still obtain Custom ★ Power-Ups for Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo and additional copies of this sync pair in the shop, but Legendary Prize Coins B were the currency instead of custom vouchers. If the player had already raised Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo to maximum potential, additional exchanges were available to convert their Custom ★ Power-Ups into 5★ Power-Ups or 3★ Power-Ups.

Fourth run

The event reran again from June 7 to July 26, 2021. The overall structure of the event was the same as the previous run. Legendary Prize Coins J could be used to make pulls from the prize box, and the grand prizes now included 3★ Level-Up Manuals, co-op sync orbs, 5★ Scout Tickets, Custom ★ Power-Ups for Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo, and a Strike Move Candy Coin. The Prize Coin reward amounts for each battle remained the same, but the amount of coins earned from most battles were tweaked.

The event missions were mostly the same as the previous run, but some missions had their objectives and rewards changed. Players could now receive three additional copies of Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo as rewards for leveling up the sync pair to certain levels, and a fourth additional copy for completing all other missions.

As additional copies of Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo and Custom ★ Power-Ups for the sync pair could now be obtained in other ways, the shop now contained only the exchanges where players could convert their Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo Custom ★ Power-Ups into 5★ Power-Ups or 3★ Power-Ups.

Plot

The event starts with Rachel believing that Team Break have teleported a strong sync pair to Pasio.

At the Pokémon Center, Professor Bellis greets the player and tells them about the rumors of a strong Pokémon that has arrived at a mountain peak. Like Rachel, Professor Bellis believes that it must be a new sync pair and wonders who the Trainer is.

The player then joins Hau and Roxie early in the morning to catch the sunrise up on the mountain as well as to see this mysterious Pokémon. After defeating a Hiker itching for a battle, the trio arrive at the peak where many Trainers have gathered. Just as the sun rises, Solgaleo appears but with no sync pair Trainer in sight. Along with a wild Ponyta and Solrock that have come along with Solgaleo, the three Pokémon defeat all the Trainers on the mountain peak.

Solgaleo then challenges the player, Hau, and Roxie to a battle. After the player defeats Solgaleo, the Sunne Pokémon returns for a repeat battle, having re-energised itself by taking up the sunshine. After multiple battles, Solgaleo appears satisfied with its fill of battles and the trio head back down the mountain. However, Solgaleo follows them down, and Hau realises that Solgaleo would like to become a sync pair with the player.

+The event first ran from January 1 to 22, 2020. In this run, players could earn custom vouchers by completing single-player and co-op battles. Unlike most event items, these vouchers were not exchanged for coins at the end of the event period, as they were intended to be used during reruns of the event. Completing battles also allowed players to earn custom items to unlock moves, unlock passive skills, and increase the level cap of Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo.

+The event reran again from December 7, 2020 to January 4, 2021. In this run, the structure of the event was significantly altered. The custom vouchers were replaced with Legendary Prize Coins B, which could be used to draw items from a prize box pool. If the grand prize was drawn from the prize box, players could advance to the next prize pool. The grand prizes in the prize box included 3★ Level-Up Manuals, co-op sync orbs, 5★ Scout Tickets, a 3★ Tech Move Candy, a 4★ Tech Move Candy, and a Strike Move Candy Coin. Extra Prize Coins were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.

Legendary Prize Coins J could be used to make pulls from the prize box, and the grand prizes now included 3★ Level-Up Manuals, co-op sync orbs, 5★ Scout Tickets, Custom ★ Power-Ups for Scottie/Bettie and Solgaleo, and a Strike Move Candy Coin. The Prize Coin reward amounts for each battle remained the same, but the amount of coins earned from most battles were tweaked.

+The event starts with [[Rachel]] believing that [[Team Break]] have teleported a strong sync pair to [[Pasio]].
+At the Pokémon Center, [[Professor Bellis]] greets the player and tells them about the rumors of a strong Pokémon that has arrived at a mountain peak. Like Rachel, Professor Bellis believes that it must be a new sync pair and wonders who the Trainer is.
+The player then joins {{mas|Hau}} and {{mas|Roxie}} early in the morning to catch the sunrise up on the mountain as well as to see this mysterious Pokémon. After defeating a Hiker itching for a battle, the trio arrive at the peak where many Trainers have gathered. Just as the sun rises, {{p|Solgaleo}} appears but with no sync pair Trainer in sight. Along with a wild {{p|Ponyta}} and {{p|Solrock}} that have come along with Solgaleo, the three Pokémon defeat all the Trainers on the mountain peak.

After the player defeats Solgaleo, the Sunne Pokémon returns for a repeat battle, having re-energised itself by taking up the sunshine.
