Starting the game
The Beginning
The game starts off with another variation of the traditional opening.

Rowan: Hello there! It’s so very nice to meet you! Welcome to the world of Pokémon! (Rowan appears on the screen) My name is Rowan. However, everyone just calls me the Pokémon Professor. Before we go any farther, is this your first adventure? If you need advice, I’m certainly capable of giving it.

The game loads with Giratina being shown on the bottom title screen. Press Start, A, or tap the screen to go to the main menu, then start a new game. You will be greeted by Professor Rowan, who will ask if you need advice about playing the game.

He gives the player the options of "Control Info", "Adventure Info", and "No Info Needed". Choosing "Control Info" brings up a slideshow showing the controls for the game. "Adventure Info" gives the player a slideshow giving you a blurb explaining the basics of how to get through the game. "No Info Needed" advances the player past the advice screen.
Afterward, Rowan will ask you about yourself. Here, choose your gender, name, and the name of Barry. None of these can be changed later on, so be sure you're happy with each choice before continuing to the next one.

Rowan: This world is widely inhabited by creatures known as Pokémon. (a Poké Ball appears on the Touch Screen) Here, I have a Poké Ball. Touch the button on the middle of the Poké Ball, if you’d please.
After choosing your rival's name, you will be brought to your house in Twinleaf Town.

The game starts in front of the TV at your house in Twinleaf Town. You are watching the tail end of a show featuring Professor Rowan. As you try to move, you will be greeted by your rival, who will briefly be distracted by your PC, and will then tell you to meet him outside as he dashes off. Follow him downstairs, where you'll have a short conversation with your mom. Just before you leave, your mom will tell you to stay away from the tall grass.

Doing so releases a Buneary, which hops out to stand next to the professor. Pressing any other button makes him say, "No, no! Not that button! The button on the Poké Ball", then gives the player the option of pressing the button again.
Twinleaf Town is cold, with patches of snow on the ground. As you explore the town, be sure to visit the house in the north-west corner of the town. Here, your rival will bump into you as you try to enter. He'll head back in immediately, however, because he forgot something. Head upstairs and your rival will ask you to meet him at 201. Leave his house and head north. Soon, you'll find yourself on Route 201.

Rowan: We humans live alongside Pokémon as friends. At times we play together, and at other times we work together. Some people use their Pokémon to battle and develop closer bonds with them. What do I do? I conduct research so that we may learn more about Pokémon. (the Buneary disappears) Now, why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself? (the two player characters appear onscreen) Are you a boy? Or are you a girl?
Route 201
Lake Verity is to the west of 201, while Sandgem Town is to the east. As you go north, you meet up with your rival for a chat. He suggests that the two of you go to Sandgem Town to get Pokémon from Professor Rowan. When you point out you shouldn't go into the tall grass, he naively suggests running through the tall grass so fast that wild Pokémon have no chance to jump out at you (running through tall grass actually increases the chance that you'll be attacked by a wild Pokémon). Just as he's about to enter the grass, an old man shouts at him to halt.

At this point, the player chooses whether to play as Dawn or Lucas. After selecting and confirming the player's gender choice, he asks for the player's name. The player can input a name or just skip this step and get a default name. The player can confirm the name or not. Choosing not to confirm the name sends the player back to the gender select screen. After confirming the player's name, Rowan shows the player a picture of the rival. The player can now name him. Confirm his name, and Rowan will continue his monologue.
The man is Professor Rowan, and he is not happy! He tells you two not to go to tall grass, then quizzes you about your love for Pokémon; eventually Dawn/Lucas will appear, and the professor will ask you to pick your very first Pokémon.

Rowan: All right, Lucas, the time has come. Your very own tale of grand adventure is about to unfold. On your journey, you will meet countless Pokémon and people. I’m sure that along the way, you will discover many things, perhaps even something about yourself. Now, go on, leap into the world of Pokémon!

*NOTE: Players cannot change their gender, name, or rival's name later on in the game so choose wisely.
Turtwig has high HP, Attack, and Defense, and its final evolution gains Ground as a secondary type; few moves are super effective or not very effective against this combination. Its Grass/Ground typing will be effective in more Gyms than Piplup, but in fewer than Chimchar.

Player's Room to Professor Rowan
Chimchar has high Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. Its second evolution gains the Fighting type, a combination that is very effective against the most Gyms out of the three choices, not to mention the Pokémon League. It can also learn the powerful Fire Blast and Focus Blast relatively early, while the other two are still relying on weaker moves like Razor Leaf and Bubble Beam. However, its very low Defense and Special Defense mean it will be vulnerable even to types it resists.
The game starts with the DawnLucas watching TV.

On TV, set against the backdrop of Rowan's lab in Sandgem Town: "Pokémon are by our side, always. I hope you will understand the meaning of those words." That was the comment left by Prof. Rowan, who has returned to Sinnoh from the Kanto region.
The screen switches to the overworld in the player's room as the TV continues with ending remarks and ads. After getting through the TV dialogue, the player should move. One step in any direction will bring your rival running up the stairs.

Rival: There you are! (walks over to the player) Hey, <player>! Did you just see the TV? Sure you did! Prof. Rowan’s that really important guy who studies Pokémon, right? That means he must have lots and lots of Pokémon. So, if we ask him, I bet he’d give us some Pokémon! (runs over to the player's computer) Oh, hey! Is this a new PC?! Uh… Where was I? (walks back to the player) Oh, right, right! We’re going to go see Prof. Rowan and get some Pokémon. I’ll be waiting outside. OK, <player>? If you’re late, I’m fining you PDollar 10 million!
Piplup is similar to Turtwig; it has high Defense and Special Attack, and its final form gains Steel as the secondary type. This combination will resist many different move types, though it gains a Ground weakness. Piplup's moves are neutrally effective against more Gyms, but its wide range of resistances combined with its high Defense allow it to take quite the pounding.
He runs off downstairs, leaving you to follow. Go downstairs. When you get down there, Mom will walk over to the player.

Mom: <player>! <rival> already left. I don't know what it was about, but he sure was in a hurry!
Once you made your choice, in true Rival fashion, Barry will pick the one that has the type advantage over your choice. Rowan will point out that these Pokémon are inexperienced with the world and need you to help them grow before he and Lucas/Dawn return to Sandgem Town. Barry will then challenge you to an immediate battle. You don't have to win this battle, but winning awards Experience points for your new first partner Pokémon, as well as a small amount of spending money.

She will walk back to her spot in front of the TV. Go outside. When the player gets to the door,
{| align="center"
Mom will speak again.

Rival: What was that about?! Oh, hey, <player>! Hey! I’m going to see Prof. Rowan! You should come, too! And quickly!
He runs off, but stops by the mailbox and comes back.

Rival: Oh, jeez! Forgot something!
He goes into the house. Follow. Go upstairs.

Rival: ...I’d better take my bag and journal, too… (notices the player) Oh, hey, <player>! I’ll be waiting on the road. It’s a PDollar10 million fine if you’re late!
He runs back downstairs. Leave the house and go north (up).
Upon entering Route 201, the rival will spot the player.

Rival: Too slow! (walks to the player) All right! Let’s get moving to Prof. Rowan’s lab. (leads the player to the grass, but player stops) ……What? Don’t go into the grass, right? No worries! No problem! It doesn’t matter that we don’t have any Pokémon. Trust me on this one. I’ve got an idea! Now listen. You know how wild Pokémon jump out when you go into tall grass? (walks to the player) So, what you do is, you scoot over to the next patch of grass before any wild Pokémon can appear! If we just keep dashing, we can get to Sandgem Town without running into wild Pokémon! OK, stick with me! (backs up a few paces) OK, here goes! On your marks... (runs forward, but stops by the player)

Voice: Hold it!

Getting a Pokémon
Your friend stops.

Professor: You two don't seem to have any Pokémon between you? Then, what is the meaning of going into the tall grass?!

Rival: ... ...

Professor: ... ... ... ...

Rival: Hey, <player>. This old guy... It's Prof. Rowan, isn't it? What's he doing here...?

Professor: ... ... They tried to go into the tall grass because they wanted Pokémon... Hmm... What do do...? Their world would surely change if they were to meet Pokémon... Is it right for me to put them on that path...? ... ... You two. You truly love Pokémon, do you?

If you say no, he will say:

Rival: Whoa, hold up! You're not making any sense here!

Professor: Er-hem! I didn't quite catch that, so I will ask you again.

If you say yes, he will say:

Rival: Me, too! I love Pokémon, too!

Professor: I will ask you once again. You two. You truly love Pokémon, do you?

Rival; What?! You can ask a hundred times! The answer will never change! We'll both answer a hundred times, we love Pokémon! Right, <player>?

If you say no, he will say:

Rival: ... That joke's getting old!

If you say yes, he will say:

Professor: ...A pair of reckless kids who foolishly try to enter tall grass without Pokémon of their own...? It worries me what people like that would do with Pokémon.

Rival: ...Uh... Well, I, uh... ... ... Well, then forget about me, but give a Pokémon to my friend here! I mean, it was me who tried to go into the tall grass and all...

Professor: ! How big of you... Very well, then! I will entrust you two with Pokémon! I apologize for putting you through that exercise. However! You must promise me that you will never recklessly endanger yourselves again. Now, then... Hm? Now, where...?

Lucas/Dawn: Professor Rowan! You left your briefcase behind at the lake. Is something wrong here?
Professor: Ah! There it is! Lucas, nice work. What I was about to do was to entrust these two with their own Pokémon.

Lucas/Dawn: Wha...?! Those Pokémon are crucial. You're giving them away?
Professor: Hm! We exist side by side with Pokémon. There comes a time when people should meet Pokémon. There is a world that should be explored together. For them, today is that time. The place, right here. Go on! Open the briefcase and choose a Pokémon!

Rival: Really?! Prof. Rowan! I can't believe it! I'm so happy now that I can't keep a straight face! Hey, <player>. You can choose first. Hey, I'm practically a grown-up. I have to show some class here.

That's when you are able to move. Walk toward the briefcase and it will open. Inside there will be three Pokéballs.
*NOTE: If you are trying to get a girl, save before you open the briefcase. Then, if it's a male, you can turn the power off and keep trying until you get a girl.

Rival: Then, I choose you! I'm picking this [whatever Pokémon is the type advantage over yours]!

Professor: Very well! Both of you have chosen a good Pokémon, it seems. Now, listen well! The Pokémon you have been entrusted with are unfamiliar with the world. In that regard, they're much like you. As fellow newcomers to the world, I hope you'll do well together. If you have any trouble, come see me at my lab in Sandgem Town. And now, we'll be on our way.

Lucas/Dawn: Professor! Wait for me! Uh, sorry, folks.

Rival: How do you like that? Prof. Rowan's really nice. On TV, he seems so stern and scary. Heheh, <player>! We've both got Pokémon now. There's only one thing to do, right? Are you up for this?

If you say no:

Rival: What's with that attitude? Don't be that way!

If you say yes:

Rival: I've always wanted to say this... The time has finally come! <player>! I challenge you to a battle!

After arriving back on Route 201, you'll meet up with Barry again. He reveals that he's also planning to go to Sandgem Town, and he asks you to come with him to Lake Verity first to find and catch the rumored legendary Pokémon to show to Professor Rowan.

Lake Verity (first visit)
Once at Lake Verity you will see Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic. He boasts to the legendary Pokémon of the lake that he will one day take control of Time and Space, then leaves the scene. When Barry is ready to press forward, you will hear this Mesprit, and he is ready to catch it only to realize that neither of you have any Poké Balls to catch it with. Barry then recalls that Professor Rowan said to come to him if they needed anything, so Barry then departs for Sandgem Town. With nothing more to do here, follow him south and then east along Route 201.

Don't worry about your HP for your Pokémon. Your Pokémon will know two moves, an Attack move and a Stat move. Your rival will mostly use Stat moves. If you just attack, you will be successful in your first battle.
Sandgem Town
Once you arrive at Sandgem Town, Lucas/Dawn are waiting to escort you inside Rowan's laboratory. Just as you're about to enter, Barry comes rushing out, commenting that Rowan is not as scary as he appears to be, before he dashes off. Once inside, the Professor takes a look at your Pokémon and approvingly allows you to keep it. Seeing the growing bond between you and your Pokémon, the Professor gives you a Pokédex and requests that you travel across Sinnoh and record data on the various Pokémon you meet.

After the battle, you will go home and talk with your mother about going to Sandgem Town. Then she will give you Running Shoes.

To Lake Verity
Outside the lab, Rowan gives you 27. Lucas/Dawn will show you around town, then suggest that you talk with your mom about what you've so quickly agreed to do. Before you go, you may want to head south of Sandgem to Route 219 and grab the Antidote waiting there, heal up your Pokémon in the Pokémon Center, and maybe even buy some Poké Balls in the Poké Mart by speaking to the cashier.

Starting the game

The player's room
Professor Rowan

The game loads with Giratina being shown on the bottom title screen. Press Start, A, or tap the screen to go to the main menu, then start a new game. You will be greeted by Professor Rowan, who will ask if you need advice about playing the game.

Afterward, Rowan will ask you about yourself. Here, choose your gender, name, and the name of your rival. None of these can be changed later on, so be sure you're happy with each choice before continuing to the next one.

After choosing your rival's name, you will be brought to your house in Twinleaf Town.

Twinleaf Town
Fresh and Free!

Twinleaf Town is cold, with patches of snow on the ground. As you explore the town, be sure to visit the house in the north-west corner of the town. Here, your rival will bump into you as you try to enter. He'll head back in immediately, however, because he forgot something. Head upstairs and your rival will ask you to meet him at Route 201. Leave his house and head north. Soon, you'll find yourself on Route 201.

Route 201

Route 201

Lake Verity is to the west of Route 201, while Sandgem Town is to the east.

The man is Professor Rowan, and he is not happy! He tells you two not to go to tall grass, then quizzes you about your love for Pokémon; eventually Dawn/Lucas will appear, and the professor will ask you to pick your very first Pokémon.

Turtwig has high HP, Attack, and Defense, and its final evolution gains Ground as a secondary type; few moves are super effective or not very effective against this combination. Its Grass/Ground typing will be effective in more Gyms than Piplup, but in fewer than Chimchar.

Chimchar has high Attack, Special Attack, and Speed. Its second evolution gains the Fighting type, a combination that is very effective against the most Gyms out of the three choices, not to mention the Pokémon League. It can also learn the powerful Fire Blast and Focus Blast relatively early, while the other two are still relying on weaker moves like Razor Leaf and Bubblebeam. However, its very low Defense and Special Defense mean it will be vulnerable even to types it resists.

Twinleaf Town

Back at home, your mom is happy that you and Barry met Professor Rowan, since he stopped you from being attacked by wild Pokémon. She then asks for you to thank him properly in Sandgem Town and gives you the ever-useful Running Shoes.

Route 201

After arriving back on Route 201, you'll meet up with Barry again. He reveals that he's also planning to go to Sandgem Town, and he asks you to come with him to Lake Verity first to find and catch the rumored legendary Pokémon to show to Professor Rowan.

Lake Verity (first visit)

Lake Verity Pt.png

Once at Lake Verity you will see Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic. He boasts to the legendary Pokémon of the lake that he will one day take control of Time and Space, then leaves the scene. When Barry is ready to press forward, you will hear this legendary Pokémon, and he is ready to catch it only to realize that neither of you have any Poké Balls to catch it with. Barry then recalls that Professor Rowan said to come to him if they needed anything, so Barry then departs for Sandgem Town. With nothing more to do here, follow him south and then east along Route 201.

Route 201

Once past Verity Lakefront, you are free to explore the tall grass, though you can't catch any wild Pokémon yet. Talk to the Poké Mart employee near the entrance to Sandgem Town to receive a free Potion, then head west to pick up an item or east to reach the town.

Verity Lakefront (optional)

There isn't much to do at Verity Lakefront right now, except collecting a hidden TinyMushroom. It is accessible from Route 201.

Sandgem Town

Sandgem Town

Once you arrive at Sandgem Town, Lucas/Dawn are waiting to escort you inside Rowan's laboratory. Just as you're about to enter, Barry comes rushing out, commenting that Rowan is not as scary as he appears to be, before he dashes off. Once inside, the Professor takes a look at your Pokémon and approvingly allows you to keep it. Seeing the growing bond between you and your Pokémon, the Professor gives you a Pokédex and requests that you travel across Sinnoh and record data on the various Pokémon you meet.

Outside the lab, Rowan gives you TM27 (Return).

Finally, head west out of Sandgem and use the ledges to return to Twinleaf.

Twinleaf Town

Enter your house, where your mom agrees that you should go on this adventure, and gives you a Journal to record it. Barry's mother shows up looking for her son, and asks you to give him a Parcel, suggesting that Barry is likely in Jubilife City by now.

Now, return to Sandgem.
