Cascoon seems to be based on a {{wp|moth}} {{wp|Pupa#Cocoon|cocoon}}. The idea that Cascoon remembers those who harmed it in the cocoon stage may be inspired by a 2008 study titled "[https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2248710/ Retention of Memory through Metamorphosis: Can a Moth Remember What It Learned As a Caterpillar?]." The study showed that butterflies avoided a smell they associated with electric shocks from their caterpillar stage.

Cascoon is a round, cocoon-like Pokémon. It is covered in purple silk, except for two holes where its red eyes are visible. The soft silk hardens into a tough cocoon that is able to endure attacks, and Cascoon will not move even when it is attacked. However, it never forgets the pain it endures and seeks revenge upon evolution.
It lives in forests, where it hides underneath large leaves and inside the gaps of tree branches. Additionally, it camouflages itself by attaching dead leaves to its body. As its cells create energy for evolution, the inside of the cocoon becomes hot. Cracks start to form in its casing when evolution is near. Cascoon's silk is said to be thin yet strong, with a luster and texture superior to the silk from its counterpart Silcoon. Cascoon's silk is used to make high-quality clothing.
Evolution
Cascoon evolves from Wurmple and evolves into Dustox.
Cascoon makes its protective cocoon by wrapping its body entirely with a fine silk from its mouth. Once the silk goes around its body, it hardens. This Pokémon prepares for its evolution inside the cocoon.
If it is attacked, Cascoon remains motionless however badly it may be hurt. It does so because if it were to move, its body would be weak upon evolution. This Pokémon will also not forget the pain it endured.
To avoid detection by its enemies, it hides motionlessly beneath large leaves and in the gaps of branches. It also attaches dead leaves to its body for camouflage.

Jessie's Wurmple evolved into a Cascoon in A Corphish out of Water, which also marked the species' debut. However, Jessie thought Cascoon was a Silcoon. As a result, James and Meowth were left worried about Jessie's rage when Cascoon evolved into Dustox. Fortunately, Jessie was ultimately not disappointed when Cascoon did indeed evolve into Dustox.
However, James's Pokémon trivia cards showed that Silcoon and Cascoon indeed have those limbs.
Cascoon is the only Bug-type cocoon-based Pokémon whose Defense stat does not decrease upon evolution.
Cascoon is the only Pokémon found in a Friend Safari that is not its own type; it is found in the Poison-type Friend Safari even though Cascoon is pure Bug. However, it evolves into the Poison-type Dustox.
