Escalation Battles (Japanese: レベルアップバトル Level-Up Battle) are a unique Special Stage type in Pokémon Shuffle
An escalation battle (Japanese: レベルアップバトル level-up battle) is a type of special stage in Pokémon Shuffle that changes as it is played: each time it is cleared, the puzzle becomes harder, but the Pokémon will also be easier to catch.

For the game's end-of-service period, escalation battle stages began running on a consistent 24-week schedule, with most lasting two weeks each - the exceptions are weeks 1, 22, 23, and 24, whose escalation battles last one week each instead.

Description
Description
Escalation Battles often feature Legendary and Mythical Pokémon. The cost per play is 1 Heart. Each Escalation Battle has a Stage Level that starts at 1 and increases every time the stage is cleared. As the Stage Level increases, the target Pokémon's base catch rate will also increase; however, the stage will gradually become more difficult as well. There is no capture bonus for any remaining moves (or seconds) in these stages. All items are available when they are applicable.
Escalation battles often feature Legendary and Mythical Pokémon. The cost per play is Heart ×1. Each escalation battle has a Stage Level that starts at 1 and increases every time the stage is cleared. As the Stage Level increases, the target Pokémon's base catch rate will also increase; however, the stage will gradually become more difficult as well. Catch rate is equal to the stage level cleared (for example: 50% when level 50 is cleared), but there is no capture bonus for any remaining moves (or seconds) in these stages. All items are available when they are applicable.

Additionally, various rewards are given once certain Stage Level milestones have been cleared, encouraging the player to continue even after they have caught the Pokémon featured in the stage. The specific milestones and rewards differ with each escalation battle. More-valuable rewards are typically guarded by a 'boss' stage, which is usually much more difficult than the stages immediately before or after it.

HP for boss stages will generally use a static value, while in-between stages will use a formula for how the HP increases. These formulas have a base HP used at the start of the range, and a step HP applied for each stage cleared in the range. For example: Decidueye stages 16 - 24 have an HP formula of 1,452 base + 182 per level up. This means that the HP of stage 16 is 1,452, stage 17 is 1,634, stage 18 is 1,816, and so on.

After the final reward has been earned from an escalation battle, further plays will repeat on a single stage. For most escalation battles, this is the final boss stage, but for Darkrai and Origin Forme Giratina, it is a unique non-boss stage. No further rewards will be granted, but the stage's level will continue to increase until the level reaches its cap of 999. If this final stage's HP uses a formula instead of a static value (in the case of Darkrai and Latios), then its HP will continue to increase up to level 999.

Additionally, various rewards are given once certain Stage Level milestones have been cleared, encouraging the player to continue even after they have caught the Pokémon featured in the stage. The specific milestones and rewards differ with each Escalation Battle. More valuable rewards are typically guarded by a 'boss' stage, which is usually much more difficult than the stages immediately before or after it.
Giratina Altered Forme was the first escalation battle for both versions, being available from June 8 to 22, 2015 on the 3DS version, and from September 28 to October 12, 2015 on the Mobile version. Diancie was previously available as a Commemorative Event from September 14–28, 2015, making it one of the few Pokémon to be available through several different kinds of special stages.

Seventeen Pokémon have been released through Escalation Battle events, with the dates they've appeared, stage data, and rewards across all versions listed in the tables below. Giratina Altered Forme was the first Escalation Battle for both versions, being available from June 8 to 22, 2015 on the 3DS version, and from September 28 to October 12, 2015 on the Mobile version. Diancie was previously available as a Commemorative Event from September 14-28, 2015, making it one of the few Pokémon to be available through several different kinds of Special Stages.
Angry skips
From version 1.3 (3DS)/1.6 (Mobile) onwards, the "angry" feature was introduced to all escalation battles. With this feature, when an escalation battle stage is cleared, the featured Pokémon has a chance to become angry, temporarily increasing the stage level by 3-5 (later, 3-15 for Mew) for 10 minutes. If the stage is started within this timeframe and cleared, the anger will subside and the Stage Level will increase to the new value, skipping several levels. However, if the timer runs out before starting the stage or the stage is failed, the anger will subside and the Stage Level reverts back to what its value would be without the anger bonus. If a reward stage would be skipped due to this, the reward will still be given if the later stage is cleared. However, certain stages are impossible to skip, notably boss or Coin stages. It is also not possible to skip between stage ranges that have different HP formulas.

If a reward stage would be skipped due to this, the reward will still be given if the later stage is cleared. However, certain stages may be designated as impossible to skip, usually including boss or Coin stages.
After successfully skipping levels due to clearing an angry stage, there is a cooldown of approximately 2 stage clears before a stage can trigger the angry state again. For instance: suppose a stage 10 is cleared, and stage 11 triggers anger with +3 levels. The angry stage (effectively stage 14) is cleared, bringing the stage level to 15. The angry state cannot occur again when clearing stages 15 or 16, but it may appear on stage 17 onwards.

In the 3DS version, the first run of Zygarde 50% Forme was the first Escalation Battle to include the "angry" feature. In the Mobile version, the Giratina Altered Forme repeat on May 31, 2016 was the first Escalation Battle with this feature.
The chance of triggering the angry state depends on how many Hearts the player possesses after clearing the stage, and whether they are under the effects of the No Hearts Needed item, which temporarily grants infinite Hearts. Generally speaking, the chance of anger increases as the player's Hearts decrease:

Further details
In the 3DS version, the first run of Zygarde 50% Forme (from April 12 to 26, 2016) was the first escalation battle to include the "angry" feature. In the Mobile version, the Giratina Altered Forme repeat on May 31, 2016 was the first escalation battle with this feature.
Giratina (Altered Forme)
There were seven types of stages confirmed in the initial run of the Giratina event, while there were eleven types of stages during the repeat of the event.
In the end-of-service events, all angry skips fall within the range of 3-5 levels skipped - this even applies to Volcanion, which still has 500 stages, but previously had skips ranging from 3-15 during the game's live service.

Drops
Drop (Shuffle)
If a Pokémon has already been caught, then each stage in its escalation battle has a chance to drop the following items:
* 25% chance to drop Personalized Skill Booster ×1
* 25% chance to drop Personalized Skill Booster ×1
* 25% chance to drop Personalized Skill Booster ×1

Drop rates can be increased if the Drop Rate Increase (DRI) effect is purchased from the List of items in Pokémon Shuffle.

However, since escalation battle stages increase their difficulty each time they are cleared, there is effectively a limit on the amount of clears possible per rotation of the event. This can then limit the amount of opportunities to obtain drops. The angry skip mechanic can further decrease these opportunities.

Latias
During the first run of this Escalation Battle, it was the first time that HP varied significantly between non-boss levels. For example, Latias had less HP at Stage Level 161 (10,752) than it did at Stage Level 61 (12,936). Previously, HP had gradually increased even when the individual stage types, disruptions, etc. had changed.

The stage data is as follows:

Delibird
Unlike the other Escalation Battles, Delibird's event was not titled "Escalation Battle", but its format was identical to them. Like in other Escalation Battles, items were rewarded to the player when they cleared certain level milestones; in contrast with other Escalation Battles, however, the stages in this event were generally rather easy. The stage was titled Incredible Item Stage (Japanese: アイテムゲットステージ Item GET Stage), "Rake In Some Items!". Despite Delibird being in a main stage, it was able to be caught during this stage, with the same catch rates as other Escalation Battle Pokémon.

The stage data for the event is as follows:

An escalation battle stage for Latios.

Description

Escalation battles often feature Legendary and Mythical Pokémon. The cost per play is Heart Shuffle.png Heart ×1.

Angry skips

An escalation battle in the angry state.

The chance of triggering the angry state depends on how many Heart Shuffle.png Hearts the player possesses after clearing the stage, and whether they are under the effects of the No Hearts Needed.png No Hearts Needed item, which temporarily grants infinite Hearts. Generally speaking, the chance of anger increases as the player's Hearts decrease:

Heart Shuffle.png Hearts on hand Anger chance

(from No Hearts Needed.png No Hearts Needed)
20%
5 or more 20%
4 20%
3 20%
2 30%
1 30%
0 50%

In the 3DS version, the first run of Zygarde 50% Forme (from April 12 to 26, 2016) was the first escalation battle to include the "angry" feature. In the Mobile version, the Giratina Altered Forme repeat on May 31, 2016 was the first escalation battle with this feature.

In the end-of-service events, all angry skips fall within the range of 3-5 levels skipped - this even applies to Volcanion, which still has 500 stages, but previously had skips ranging from 3-15 during the game's live service.

Drops

Main article: Drop (Shuffle)

If a Pokémon has already been caught, then each stage in its escalation battle has a chance to drop the following items:

 • 25% chance to drop Skill Booster personalized.png Personalized Skill Booster ×1
 • 25% chance to drop Skill Booster personalized.png Personalized Skill Booster ×1
 • 25% chance to drop Skill Booster personalized.png Personalized Skill Booster ×1

Drop rates can be increased if the Drop Rate Increase.png Drop Rate Increase (DRI) effect is purchased from the Special Shop.

However, since escalation battle stages increase their difficulty each time they are cleared, there is effectively a limit on the amount of clears possible per rotation of the event. This can then limit the amount of opportunities to obtain drops. The angry skip mechanic can further decrease these opportunities.

Live-service stages

Main article: Escalation battle/Live service period

Trivia

 • The first run of Zygarde (50% Forme) on 3DS allowed players to skip boss stages with the anger mechanic. This was likely an oversight, as all future escalation battles prevent skipping bosses.
 • Giratina (Altered Forme) has Shaymin (Land Forme) as a 5th support in levels 50 and 100. This is a reference to Giratina and the Sky Warrior.
 • Volcanion has several Magearna in the initial board of level 300. This is a reference to Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel.
 • At level 999, Latios has the highest HP in Pokémon Shuffle, at 14,471,940. If a skill such as Hyper Drain is used to deal 10% of the enemy's HP in damage, then it results in the highest possible single-hit damage at 1,447,194.
