Pearl wakes up in a panic, unsure of where he is. He is relieved to find his Pokémon in their Poké Balls beside him, but quickly remembers that they had been injured when he failed to protect Azelf from Team Galactic. He apologizes to the three of them, then moves to a nearby window to realize that he is somewhere in Pastoria City. The sound of singing fills the air, and Pearl follows the noise to find Crasher Wake, sweeping the floor while listening to his own theme song. Realizing that Wake had rescued him and brought him to the Pastoria Gym, Pearl thanks him profusely. Wake tells him that he was simply performing his job as a Gym Leader, then explains that Rad Rickshaw is fixing his bicycle in the Gym's storage room.

Pearl follows Crasher Wake outside, where his Quagsire and Floatzel are still using Rain Dance to refill Lake Valor with water. Wake notes that Floatzel's speed would make it a great Pokémon for Pearl's team. When Pearl asks Wake if he is going to give Floatzel to him, he declines. Instead, he gives Pearl advice on how to catch one himself.

Crasher Wake steers Pearl to Route 213, where there are many Floatzel and Buizel. He gives him a few empty Poké Balls, and Pearl immediately shifts his attention to sending his Pokémon after some Floatzel. Wake advises Pearl to instead go after a Buizel and evolve it. After weakening one with Rayler, Pearl throws a Poké Ball at it. To his surprise, the Poké Ball bounces off of its head. The Buizel glares at him and begins to growl. Wake points out that all of the wild Pokémon on Route 213 have been made angry due to the force of the Galactic Bomb drying up their habitats. He explains that the Pokémon know that humans are responsible for the damage done to their lairs, and Pearl feels immense guilt for being unable to stop the explosion.

Seeing Pearl's change in mood, Crasher Wake brings him to a face board of a Croagunk. He puts Pearl's face through the hole in the board, encouraging him to see things from a new perspective. Pearl's Pokémon laugh when they see him, causing Pearl to laugh too. Wake explains to him that it's good to laugh when things don't go as planned. Pearl agrees, and realizes that because he has been separated from Diamond for so long, he had forgotten that. Wake offers to train Pearl in order to prepare him to fight Team Galactic, and Pearl eagerly accepts.

Meanwhile, at the Galactic Veilstone Building, Cyrus explains to Charon that the airships are heading toward Veilstone City. He tells him that their next step is to build the Red Chain by using the powers of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf.
