Past
Cheren grew up in Nuvema Town with his friends Bianca and Black. As they played together, Black gained interest in becoming a Pokémon Trainer and beating the Pokémon League and dragged Cheren and Bianca into becoming Pokémon Trainers as well.
Cheren, along with Bianca, has been friends with Black since they were small children. As the three played together, Black would eventually gain an interest in challenging the Pokémon League. Over the next several years, Cheren would support his friend's dream.

Cheren, along with Bianca, first make their appearance in front of Professor Juniper's Lab where they find the aftermath of the fight between the Professor's Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott. While Professor Juniper fumes over the mess caused by the fighting Pokémon, Bianca gives him the Snivy, stating that it resembled him, and takes Oshawott for herself.

Noticing the Tepig's footprints on the ground, the group follows them to find Black and Tepig on a tree being attacked by a wild Pokémon. While Cheren wants to help, Professor Juniper wants to see if Black can defeat the Pokémon by himself and if he does, she will allow him to have a Pokédex despite the trouble he caused. While Black fights the Pokémon off, Cheren explains the techniques Black used to find it to Professor Juniper.
Cheren debuted in Choices. He and Bianca met with Professor Juniper at her laboratory to ask why the first partner Pokémon and Pokédexes that were supposed to be delivered to Black's house haven't arrived yet. They discovered that two of the first partner Pokémon had gotten into a fight with each other while the third ran off elsewhere. While Professor Juniper cleaned up the mess, Bianca gave Cheren to Cheren, stating that it resembled him. They tracked Tepig's footprints to a nearby cliff side, where they found it and Black stuck in a tree, being attacked by a wild Pokémon. Cheren suggested helping his friend, but Professor Juniper refused, wanting to use the moment to see if Black was still worthy of owning a Pokédex despite the trouble he caused her. By cooperating with Tepig, Black managed to defeat the Sewaddle that was attacking him. With Sewaddle defeated, Black immediately left to start his journey, leaving the others behind. Later, Cheren and Bianca realized that because of Black's negligence, their Pokédexes ended up left in a puddle, causing them to malfunction.

After Black leaves the area once he defeats the wild Pokémon, Cheren and Bianca find out that their Pokédexes are malfunctioning because of Black's negligence, leaving his as the only working one.

Later, Cheren and Bianca have a sparring match with their new Pokémon while they wait for their Pokédexes to be fixed. When Professor Juniper tells them that it would take longer than she thought it would, she asks if Cheren and Bianca are in contact with Black. When Cheren states they aren't, he states that Black may be researching information about Tepig.

Cheren then goes on to explain how Black started to become interested in becoming a Pokémon Trainer and dragging him and Bianca into it as well. After this, Professor Juniper tells Cheren and Bianca to find Black and tell him that he has the only working Pokédex and that he should take care of it. Cheren and Bianca then begin their journey together.
In A Nickname for Tepig, Cheren and Bianca had a quick sparring match that ended in Cheren's victory. Professor Juniper revealed that repairing the Pokédexes would take longer than she expected. With Black having the only working Pokédex, Professor Junper told Cheren and Bianca to go find Black and tell him to take care of it.

Sometime later, Cheren and Bianca reach Striaton City so they can find Black. They manage to find him in a restaurant where Bianca mistakes him being on a date with White. After the girl leaves, Cheren and Bianca meet up with Black who explains his situation to them. Soon after, they are introduced to the Gym Leaders of the restaurant/Gym, Cilan, Cress, and Chili.

When Black's Gym battle starts, Bianca interferes with the challenge when she attempts to solve the Gyms puzzle, only to get it wrong by saying that the Fire is strong against the Water. After Black and Bianca get into a fight, their Pokémon fighting as well, Cheren lectures Black about his actions. He explains to Black that because of his negligence, his and Bianca's Pokédexes are broken and they had to start their journey later than they intended. Cheren passes on the message from Professor Juniper and tells him to be more considerate of others.
In Welcome to Striaton City!!, Cheren and Bianca found Black at the Striaton Gym. They chastised Black for leaving home without them and causing their Pokédexes to get damaged. Seeing the conversation, the Gym Leaders, Cilan, Cress, and Chili, allowed Cheren and Bianca to participate in the Gym challenge alongside Black. Together, Cheren, Bianca, and Black managed to defeat the triplet Gym Leaders and earn the Trio. Afterward, Black apologized for his actions and gave Cheren and Bianca a Xtransceiver each so they could keep in touch. After going their separate ways, Cheren and Bianca realized they never exchanged numbers with Black, forcing them to go and find him again.

Suddenly, Chili calls from the video-phone to tell them that Black is disqualified from challenging the Gym. Luckily for Black, it turned out that Chili was only kidding and he lets Bianca and Cheren take on the Gym as well because it would be a good learning experience for Bianca. After this, Black and Cheren teach Bianca about Pokémon type compatibility by using her Oshawott as an example of which types are super effective and not very effective to Water Pokémon. As they go through the Gym, Cheren notes that Bianca is learning about type compatibilities, the starters start to get along, and they finally reach the Gym Leaders.
In Fight in a Cold Climate, Cheren met up with Black in Driftveil City. To celebrate their encounter, Cheren took Black to a Move Tutor's so they could train their Pokémon. While there, Cheren was attacked by two Team Plasma Grunts, who stole his Snivy and ran off to the Cold Storage. Cheren and Black followed the thieves and faced them in battle, eventually managing to free Snivy from its Poké Ball. With the Grass Pledge and Fire Pledge they learned from the Move Tutor's, Snivy and Nite defeated the Grunts, forcing them to flee. After seeing Black off, Cheren decided to revisit the Cold Storage in hopes that he could learn more about Team Plasma.

At first, the Gym Leaders have the advantage in the battle but by using strategy, Cheren, Bianca, and Black manage to rack up some damage against the Gym Leaders' Pokémon.
In Hallway Hijinks, Cheren appeared as a competitor in the Pokémon League, eventually making it to the Top 8. In the second battle of the quarterfinals, Cheren went up against Leo and easily defeated him. When Leo congratulated his opponent over his victory, Cheren coldly ignored him, which Black noted as unusual behavior.

In Something Suspicious, Cheren faced the Hood Man in the semifinals. During the battle, Black noticed that Cheren's Snivy had yet to evolve, which he noted should have happened at some point. When Snivy was unable to defeat its opponent, Cheren forcibly switched it out for Unfezant, who managed to defeat the Hood Man's Beheeyem and win the battle. This infuriated Black, who demanded to know why Cheren was treating his Pokémon poorly. Cheren explained that Snivy didn't live up to his expectations, which angered Black into starting the final battle early.

Eventually, Cheren's Snivy is hit by a powerful attack from Chili's Pansear and is the first to be knocked out. Soon after, Oshawott is defeated, leaving Tep as the only Pokémon left to fight Cilan and Cress's Pansage and Panpour. Despite nearly being defeated by Panpour, Tep manages to feed Oshawott and Snivy some of Pansage's leaves, rejuvenating them and allowing their Trainers to win the match 3-2 when the Gyms time limit runs out.
In True Friends, Cheren and Black faced each other in the finals. Cheren revealed that after their previous encounter, he met Zinzolin, one of the Seven Sages, who convinced him to follow Team Plasma's ideals and pursue strength. Their battle eventually took them to the roof of the League building, where they had one final clash, ending in Black's victory. After passing out from a large amount of Dream Mist that filled the area, Cheren and Black shared a memory of their childhood when Cheren promised to support Black's dream. Furious over his friend's manipulation, Black called out to Team Plasma and dared they come out of hiding.

The three Trainers then receive their Badges from the Striaton Gym Leaders. Afterwards, Black apologizes to Cheren and Bianca for breaking the Pokédexes and gives them a Xtransceiver so they can keep in touch. After this, White comes back and introduces herself to Bianca and Cheren while advertising her BW Agency. After the two groups go their separate ways, Cheren and Bianca realize they didn't get Black's Xtransceiver number and run off to find him.
Black 2 & White 2
Two years later, in The Transfer Student, Cheren was revealed to have become a teacher at the Aspertia City Trainers' School. On his first day, he forced Blake, Hugh, and Leo to sit outside for starting an argument. Shortly after, he introduced the new transfer student, Whitley, to the class. Hearing the conversation Blake and others were having about Whitley, Cheren decided to skip the lecture and instead had the students battle each other. Separated into two separate groups by gender, Blake and Whitley competed against their classmates and won, earning themselves a Pokédex from Bianca.

Cheren meets up with Black again at Driftveil City after his Pidove evolves into a Tranquill. There, Cheren takes Black to a place to train their Pokémon to celebrate their meeting up again. While they train, Cheren is attacked by Team Plasma, who steal his Snivy  in an attempt to liberate it. Cheren and Black follow the thieves to the Cold Storage, where they battle them to retrieve Cheren's stolen Pokémon.
In Mr. Perfect, Cheren talked to Bianca about his first day as a teacher. They were interrupted by a call from Drayden, who informed them of the third Legendary Dragon of the Unova region: Kyurem. He noted that Team Plasma may have revived in order to obtain Kyurem for themselves.

With the help of his Tranquill, Cheren manages to free his Snivy from its Poké Ball. Together, with the assistance of Black's Nite, they defeat the Plasma Grunt's Pokémon with a combination of Fire Pledge and Grass Pledge. Defeated, the Grunts flee while Black and Cheren celebrate their teamwork.
In Movie Panic, Cheren took his students on a field trip to Pokéstar Studios. There, he encountered Brycen, whom he challenged two years ago during his Badge quest. To Cheren's surprise, Brycen suggested that he sign up for the open Gym Leader position available in Aspertia City.

Despite earlier claims of not intending to participate, Cheren is revealed to be one of the competitors of the Pokémon League. After advancing through the rounds, he eventually makes it to the top 8. In the quarterfinals, he is set up to face Poké Maniac as his opponent. During the battle, Cheren manages to easily defeat his opponent, but Black notes that he was unusually cold to his opponent.
In Choir Tournament, Cheren watched his class take part in the Autumn Choir Tournament. After facing off against a variety of other teams in the tournament, Blake and Whitley's team emerged as the winner. Roxie, who Blake had invited to judge the competition, had her father take the winning team and their class to Castelia City to compete in the Unova Choir Tournament.

In the semifinals, Cheren faces Hood Man as his next opponent. During the battle, it is revealed that Cheren's Snivy had yet to evolve, much to Black's confusion. When Snivy is unable to defeat its opponent, Cheren expresses disappointment in its power and forcibly switches it out for Unfezant, who manages to defeat Hood Man. This infuriates Black, who becomes disgusted at Cheren's terrible treatment of his Pokémon and demands to know what's wrong with him. Cheren reveals that he switched Snivy out because it didn't live up to his expectations of strength.
In Therian Forme III, Cheren and his class gathered at Prime Pier. When Hugh arrived, he revealed to everyone that Team Plasma returned and a member of their class is one of them. Hugh decided to leave the school to fight Team Plasma, but was stopped by Whitley. Finding her behavior suspicious, the class suspected Whitley, but were affected by her Foongy's spores, causing everyone to pass out.

This angers Black even further, and he leaps out of his seat to confront his friend. Despite the Announcer stating that they have to wait until the final match begins, both Trainers decide to battle each other immediately. In their battle, Cheren reveals that after their adventure in the Cold Storage, he returned there because he was curious about Team Plasma. There, he encountered Zinzolin, who managed to drill Team Plasma's ideals into Cheren's head and made him pursue strength. Black refuses to accept Cheren's motives and challenges him to prove that he's right by beating him in battle.
In Pink Slip, Cheren woke up to find he, Roxie, and the class were taken to the Marine Tube. There, they encountered Benga, a Trainers' School student that was suspended on the first day of school for picking a fight with his classmates. Benga and Marlon took everyone to safety after Castelia was frozen over by Team Plasma's flying ship, the Plasma Frigate. When asked to join Benga and Marlon launch a counterattack against the villains, Cheren and Roxie agreed, but the former decided to wait until he confirmed the status on the missing Blake, Hugh, and Leo.

Cheren attempts to have his Gigalith finish off Bo, but a large cloud of pink smoke suddenly fills the sky, preventing it from attack. Cheren and Black switch out for Unfezant and Braviary and has them attack each other with Sky Attack. The attacks collide, but Unfezant is defeated, making Black the winner of the battle. When the Announcer checks up on the two, he finds that both of them have fallen asleep. In their dreams, Cheren and Black meet each other and see their younger selves writing their dreams in a notebook. Black soon wakes up first and states that no matter what, he will always remain friends with Cheren. The anger he feels from seeing Cheren used by Team Plasma helps free his Reshiram from the Light Stone.
By The Final Battle: Crushed Ambition, the Marine Tube had been frozen by the Plasma Frigate along with the rest of Undella Town. Despite his efforts, Benga was unable to break through the ice, even when Bianca and Cedric Juniper arrived to help. With the combined might of all three Pledge moves, the ice was destroyed, freeing Cheren and his students. Cedric confirmed that Cheren's missing students were safe while Bianca revealed that Black had been freed from the Light Stone. Cheren and Bianca were transported to the abandoned N's Castle. The area had been set ablaze when the Plasma Frigate crashed into it, putting the Pokémon Team Plasma left behind at risk. Cheren, Black, White, Blake, Whitley, Hugh, Bianca, Benga, and Cedric combined the might of all three stages of the Unova first partner Pokémon and unleashed a triple Grass, Water Pledge, and Fire Pledge combination attack, successfully dousing the flames.

Black 2 & White 2
In Epilogue: Graduation Ceremony, during the Trainers' School graduation ceremony, Black announced that he would start attending school in preparation for when he challenged the Pokémon League again, much to Cheren's frustration. Later, Cheren watched his students graduate.
Two years later, he became the teacher of a Trainer's School in Aspertia City. While he teaches class, Cheren gets annoyed by Petashi, Hugh, and Lack-Two's clamoring and forces them to stand outside while class was still in session. After they continue to talk even while outside, Cheren decides that it would be best to have a battle between the class. When Lack-Two and Whi-Two win the battle, Cheren reveals that the battle was a test to determine the best Trainers in the class. He has Bianca come and present the two winners with new Pokédexes.

Later, Cheren takes the class to Pokéstar Studios for a field trip. There, he meets Brycen, who remembers him from his Badge quest two years ago. Much to Cheren's surprise, Brycen suggests that he should sign up for the open Gym Leader spot that's available in Aspertia City.

Cheren (Japanese: チェレン Cheren) is a supporting character of the manga series Pokémon Adventures.

Character

Cheren is a Pokémon Trainer along with his two friends, Bianca and Black. Cheren is a very polite person and is prone to apologizing for even the most pointless of reasons. He and Bianca are well acquainted with Professor Juniper and were the ones who recommended Black to be the third Unova Pokédex holder despite her having never met the boy before.

However, once entering the Pokémon League, Cheren had become cold and indifferent even to his own Pokémon. He then revealed to Black that the only thing he seeks for now is strength. However, this had been because he was brainwashed by Team Plasma in Driftveil City.

Cheren has known Black since they were both children and has memorized all of his various quirks.

History

Past

Cheren, along with Bianca, has been friends with Black since they were small children. As the three played together, Black would eventually gain an interest in challenging the Pokémon League. Over the next several years, Cheren would support his friend's dream.

Black & White arc

Cheren at age five

Cheren debuted in Choices. He and Bianca met with Professor Juniper at her laboratory to ask why the first partner Pokémon and Pokédexes that were supposed to be delivered to Black's house haven't arrived yet. They discovered that two of the first partner Pokémon had gotten into a fight with each other while the third ran off elsewhere. While Professor Juniper cleaned up the mess, Bianca gave Snivy to Cheren, stating that it resembled him.

Cheren in the Black & White arc

In Welcome to Striaton City!!, Cheren and Bianca found Black at the Striaton Gym. They chastised Black for leaving home without them and causing their Pokédexes to get damaged. Seeing the conversation, the Gym Leaders, Cilan, Cress, and Chili, allowed Cheren and Bianca to participate in the Gym challenge alongside Black. Together, Cheren, Bianca, and Black managed to defeat the triplet Gym Leaders and earn the Trio Badge. Afterward, Black apologized for his actions and gave Cheren and Bianca a Xtransceiver each so they could keep in touch. After going their separate ways, Cheren and Bianca realized they never exchanged numbers with Black, forcing them to go and find him again.

With the Grass and Fire Pledge they learned from the Move Tutor's, Snivy and Nite defeated the Grunts, forcing them to flee. After seeing Black off, Cheren decided to revisit the Cold Storage in hopes that he could learn more about Team Plasma.

Cheren vs Black

In Something Suspicious, Cheren faced the Hood Man in the semifinals. During the battle, Black noticed that Cheren's Snivy had yet to evolve, which he noted should have happened at some point. When Snivy was unable to defeat its opponent, Cheren forcibly switched it out for Unfezant, who managed to defeat the Hood Man's Beheeyem and win the battle. This infuriated Black, who demanded to know why Cheren was treating his Pokémon poorly. Cheren explained that Snivy didn't live up to his expectations, which angered Black into starting the final battle early.

Black 2 & White 2 arc

Two years later, in The Transfer Student, Cheren was revealed to have become a teacher at the Aspertia City Trainers' School. On his first day, he forced Blake, Hugh, and Leo to sit outside for starting an argument. Shortly after, he introduced the new transfer student, Whitley, to the class. Hearing the conversation Blake and others were having about Whitley, Cheren decided to skip the lecture and instead had the students battle each other. Separated into two separate groups by gender, Blake and Whitley competed against their classmates and won, earning themselves a Pokédex from Bianca.

In Mr. Perfect, Cheren talked to Bianca about his first day as a teacher. They were interrupted by a call from Drayden, who informed them of the third Legendary Dragon of the Unova region: Kyurem. He noted that Team Plasma may have revived in order to obtain Kyurem for themselves.

Cheren, Black, White, Blake, Whitley, Hugh, Bianca, Benga, and Cedric combined the might of all three stages of the Unova first partner Pokémon and unleashed a triple Grass, Water, and Fire Pledge combination attack, successfully dousing the flames.

In Epilogue: Graduation Ceremony, during the Trainers' School graduation ceremony, Black announced that he would start attending school in preparation for when he challenged the Pokémon League again, much to Cheren's frustration. Later, Cheren watched his students graduate.
