Latias (Japanese: ラティアス Latias) is a dual-type Dragon/Psychic legendary Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Latias is a bird-like dragon Pokémon vaguely resembling Lugia. The lower half of her body is red with jet-plane wings and stubby feet that are similar to ones Crobat has. Latias has a blue triangle-shaped ring on her chest that resembles one of the spots Togepi and Togetic have. Latias's white and red arms can be tucked into her body in order to reduce air-resistance when in flight. The upper-half of Latias's body is white. She has triangle-shaped ears and a red face with a white pentagon in the middle.
Gender differences
Latias is a female-only species. Her male counterpart is Latios.
Special abilities
Latias comes with the ability Levitate, which causes Template:Type2 moves to miss.
Latias can enfold her body with glass-like down to refract light and alter her appearance. She is highly intelligent and can understand human speech. She can telepathically communicate with others.
Latias's Dragon and Psychic typing has given her the ability to wield attacks of many different elements (expect for Fire).
In the movie Pokémon Heroes Latias and Latios also had the ability "Sight Sharing" which allowed Latias and people around her to see exactly what Latios is seeing.
Latias is the only known Pokémon that can learn Mist Ball.
Behavior
Latias will form small herds of several members. They will rarely make contact with people or other Pokémon. If Latias senses hostility towards herself, she will ruffle the feathers all over her body and cry shrilly to intimidate her foe. However, she will usually disappear if she senses an enemy.
Habitat
Latias rarely shows herself to humans, so her location is often found in isolated areas, or in secret havens. However, wherever they do make their homes usually has a body of fresh water.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
In the anime
Latias has had only made one appearance in the anime so far, in the fifth movie, Pokémon Heroes. Latias and her brother, Latios were the targets of Annie and Oakley. Latias assisted Ash in the mission to save Latios.
In the manga
Latias, along with Latios, was befriended by Emerald and took the young Trainer to the Battle Frontier. She has appeared in human form a few times as the saga continues.

Other appearances
After Latias appears from its Poké Ball, she will fly off the stage. She and Latios will then alternately zoom onto the stage with Aerial Ace, damaging any opponent that collides with them. It may also cause movement of items as well.

In Pokémon Emerald, the roaming Pokémon is chosen in a sequence immediately after the credits where, after hearing a television report, the player is asked the color of the Pokémon in it. If red is selected, Latias roams Hoenn and Latios is found at the island. If blue is selected, Latias is found at the island and Latios roams Hoenn.

Trivia
- Even though Latias could shapeshift in the anime, it cannot learn Transform.
- Latias and Latios were the first legendary Pokémon to have set genders, or even genders at all.
- Latias is one of the few non-Template:Type2s who can learn Fly. The others are Mew, Smeargle (by Sketch), Vibrava, Flygon, Latios, Giratina, and Arceus (though Arceus can be a Flying-type by holding a Sky Plate).
- Before Generation IV, Latias either resisted or was weak to every type classified as special, taking no neutral hits from any. It shares this trait with Latios.
- Despite being legendary Pokémon, regular battle music is played when Latias and Latios are encountered. They share this trait with Shaymin and Cresselia.
- In Generation III, Latias had two noticebly different back sprites. Its normal sprite shows it with its hand raised, and its shiny sprite doesn't show its hand. This was corrected in Generation IV.
Origin
Latias appears to be a cross between a jet plane and a dragon, although it and Latios may also draw inspiration from the philosophy of Yin/Yang and psychology of id/ego.
Name origin
It is possible that Latias's name is based on the Latin word lateo, hidden. The -as suffix in its name indicates that it is female, while the -os in Latios indicates that it is male.
