Like Generations I through III, the player can once again choose which fossil they want to get in each game. The fossils are found in the [[Ancient Castle]], where they will be offered by one of the {{tc|Backpacker}}s in the first floor of the ruins. One can be chosen, and the other will be kept by the Backpacker.

The Cover Fossil was introduced as an Item card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game in the Noble Victories expansion, first released in the Japanese Red Collection. The other six cards are then shuffled back into the deck.cards are then shuffled back into the deck.

Main article: Antique Cover Fossil (Stellar Crown 129)

The Scarlet & Violet Series saw the release of Antique Cover Fossil in the Stellar Crown expansion, first released in the Japanese Stellar Miracle expansion. This card is unlike the previous Cover Fossil card and more in line with other Item cards depicting Fossils, allowing the player to play it onto the Bench as if it were a Colorless-type Basic Pokémon. It has an Ability that prevents all effects of attacks used by the opponent's Pokémon done to it.

Unidentified Fossil cards are Fossil Trainer cards which become Basic Pokémon. While they do not feature a Cover Fossil, they can still be used to evolve into certain Tirtouga.
