The Fast Ship S.S. Aqua (Japanese: 高速船アクア号 Fast Ship S.S. Aqua) is a ferry service that runs between Johto and Kanto. It doesn't run nearly as often as the Magnet Train, the only other method of transportation between Johto and Kanto in the Generation II and IV games. It travels between Olivine City and Vermilion City. A player can only travel on this ship after defeating the Johto League.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, the captain of the ship implies that the S.S. Aqua travels to Sinnoh, as he mentions finding plates there. However, the ship does not appear in any of the games that take place there.
Fast Ship S.S. Aqua (Japanese: こうそくせんアクアごう High-Speed Vessel Aqua-gō), commonly referred to as simply the S.S. Aqua (Japanese: アクアごう Aqua-gō) or Fast Ship (Japanese: こうそくせん High-Speed Vessel), is a ferry service that runs between Johto and Kanto.

It is one of the methods of transportation between Johto and Kanto in the Generation II and IV games, alongside the Magnet Train, walking, and flying or teleporting. It travels between Olivine City and Vermilion City. A player can only travel on this ship after defeating the Johto League.

Terminology
Fast Ship S.S. Aqua
Fast Ship S.S. Aqua (Japanese: こうそくせんアクアごう High-Speed Vessel Aqua)

* Mentioned in the game dialogue. Some examples: "Welcome to <sc>Fast Ship S.S.Aqua</sc>.", "<sc>Fast Ship S.S. Aqua</sc> is en route to <sc>Vermilion City</sc>.", "<sc>Fast Ship S.S. Aqua</sc> has arrived in <sc>Vermilion City</sc>."

S.S. Aqua
S.S. Aqua (Japanese: アクアごう Aqua)

* Mentioned in the game dialogue. Some examples: "How do you like S.S. Aqua's ride?", "S.S. Aqua uses jets to skim over the waves!"
* Mentioned in the S.S. Ticket item description from Gold, as well as HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Fast Ship
Fast Ship (Japanese: こうそくせん High-Speed Vessel)

* Mentioned in the game dialogue. Some examples: "The Fast Ship will sail next Friday.", "The Fast Ship is a great place to meet and battle trainers.", "A voyage is best for getting over a broken heart. But a Fast Ship trip is too short for grieving."
* The Fast Ship Pier is located in Olivine City, as said on a sign at the city.
* In Crystal, the name "Fast Ship" is used by the Poké Seer when talking about a Pokémon that was originally met on the ship (this is only legitimately possible if an Egg hatches on the ship).
* In Gold, the player may not select S.S. Aqua on the Pokégear map because of the List of glitches in Generation II. However, the feature to select the ship is found in the game data, in which case it would be named "Fast Ship" on the map.

When the player first rides the ship to Vermilion City, a man will bump into them as they board and explain that he's lost his granddaughter. When the player first enters the lower deck, a crewman will deny them access to the rest of the ship, asking them to locate a co-worker who is slacking off on the floor above. The crewman is a Sailor in a previously empty room (in Generation IV, the Sailor is found sleeping in a cabin before the player is asked to find him), and once he is defeated in a Pokémon battle, the crewman below will let the player pass. After traversing through the lower deck, the player will find the man's granddaughter trying to get the ship's captain to play with her. The player will then take her back to her grandfather, at which point the S.S. Aqua will arrive in Vermilion City and the player can disembark.

After the initial trip to Kanto (which can happen on any day of the week), the S.S. Aqua can be sailed from Kanto to Johto every Sunday & Wednesday and from Johto to Kanto each Monday & Friday. Trips after the initial one will end when the player sleeps in the bed in their cabin, which heals their party.

Trainers can also be encountered and battled on the ship each voyage. In Gold, if the player defeats one or more Trainers on the ship and then boards it again for the same voyage (even on the same day), the Trainers can be battled and defeated again, and the player can keep re-boarding and re-battling the Trainers an unlimited number of times. However, in the Generation IV remakes, once an individual Trainer is defeated, that Trainer can never be battled again, regardless of when or how often the player re-boards the S.S. Aqua.

S.S. Aqua on the map
The S.S. Aqua appears as a fixed location on the Pokégear map, at the sea between Johto and Kanto. This is not always an accurate representation of the player's location on the map, given that it still appears at sea even after the announcement that the ship has docked either in Olivine City or Vermilion City.

In Gold, there is some unused game data that would allow the player to select the S.S. Aqua in the Pokégear map. However, this is not allowed due to an oversight in those games. The map erroneously displays New Bark Town by default as the player's current place when in fact they are aboard the S.S. Aqua.

In the Pokédex map from Pokémon Stadium 2, the S.S. Aqua is seen near Olivine City.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, after the player has obtained all 16 Badges, they can receive gifts from the captain of the S.S. Aqua. Whenever the captain is spoken to in his cabin for the first time on a given day, he will give away one of the Plates. After he has given away all 16 Plates, he will begin to give out Nuggets instead.

* In both Generation II and Generation IV, if the player goes to sleep, wakes up, and hears the announcement about docking, checking the Pokégear map will still show the player in the ocean between Kanto and Johto.
* Like the S.S. Anne and the S.S. Tidal, the S.S. Aqua has one non-player character on-board who mentions being seasick.
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Hiker Noland has a Bronzor on his team, making it the first Sinnoh Pokémon owned by an NPC that the player may see.
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is a girl in the Olivine Port building who claims that the player has been in Kanto before regardless of if it being their first time there or not.
** Sailor Jeff in the same games has a Makuhita, the first Hoenn Pokémon owned by an NPC the player may see.
* Travelling to either Kanto or Johto in the S.S. ** the captain of the ship implies that the S.S. Aqua travels to Sinnoh, as he mentions finding Plates there. However, the ship does not appear in any of the games that take place there.
* In Generation IV, there is a girl in the Olivine Port building that mentions the player having been in Kanto before even if they have not.
** even after the player has obtained all 16 Plates and the Captain hands out Nuggets instead, he still refers to them as "mysterious things" he found from Sinnoh, as if he was still handing out Plates.

 • Mentioned in the game dialogue. Some examples: "Welcome to Fast Ship S.S.Aqua.", "Fast Ship S.S. Aqua is en route to Vermilion City.", "Fast Ship S.S. Aqua has arrived in Vermilion City."

Fast Ship (Japanese: こうそくせん High-Speed Vessel)

 • Mentioned in the game dialogue. Some examples: "The Fast Ship will sail next Friday.", "The Fast Ship is a great place to meet and battle trainers.", "A voyage is best for getting over a broken heart. But a Fast Ship trip is too short for grieving."
 • The Fast Ship Pier is located in Olivine City, as said on a sign at the city.
 • In Pokémon Crystal, the name "Fast Ship" is used by the Poké Seer when talking about a Pokémon that was originally met on the ship (this is only legitimately possible if an Egg hatches on the ship).
 • In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the player may not select S.S. Aqua on the Pokégear map because of the S.S. Aqua map glitch. However, the feature to select the ship is found in the game data, in which case it would be named "Fast Ship" on the map.

Voyages

The S.S. Aqua in Generation II

When the player first rides the ship to Vermilion City, a man will bump into them as they board and explain that he lost his granddaughter. After traversing through the lower deck, the player will find the man's granddaughter trying to get the captain to play with her. The player takes her back to her grandfather, at which point the S.S. Aqua will arrive in Vermilion City and the player can disembark.

After the initial trip to Kanto (which can happen on any day of the week), the S.S. Aqua can be sailed from Kanto to Johto every Sunday and Wednesday and from Johto to Kanto each Monday and Friday. Trips after the initial one will end when the player sleeps in the bed in their cabin, which heals their party.

S.S. Aqua Schedule
Port Days
Olivine Monday and Friday
Vermilion Wednesday and Sunday

Trainers can also be encountered and battled on the ship each voyage. In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, if the player defeats one or more Trainers on the ship and then boards it again for the same voyage (even on the same day), the Trainers can be battled and defeated again, and the player can keep re-boarding and re-battling the Trainers an unlimited number of times. However, in the Generation IV remakes, once an individual Trainer is defeated, that Trainer can never be battled again, regardless of when or how often the player re-boards the S.S. Aqua.

S.S. Aqua on the map

The Pokégear map when used aboard the S.S. Aqua

The S.S. Aqua appears as a fixed location on the Pokégear map, at the sea between Johto and Kanto. This is not always an accurate representation of the player's location on the map, given that it still appears at sea even after the announcement that the ship has docked either in Olivine City or Vermilion City.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, there is some unused game data that would allow the player to select the S.S.

The S.S. Aqua in Pokémon Adventures

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

The S.S. Aqua first appeared in Off Course with Corsola, where Lt. Surge unintentionally brought Crystal to the ship from Union Cave through a secret underwater tunnel. Soon after, the ship landed in Olivine City, which Crystal, having been in Union Cave to get to the western side of Johto, was pleased to reach. It was also revealed that Lt. Surge tended to use the ship for personal purposes.

In Sandslash Surprise, Lt. Surge used the S.S. Aqua to sail to the Whirl Islands, where Gold and Silver had wound up after getting defeated by the Masked Man at Lake of Rage. Soon after arriving, the ship was lifted into the air by Lugia's Psychic powers. After Lugia disappeared, the ship was safely brought back down.

Emerald arc

The S.S. Aqua briefly reappeared in Epilogue as one of the ships transporting masses of people, including the Day-Care Couple, Wilton, Kurt, Maizie, Professor Elm, Joey, DJ Mary, and Hiro, to visit the Battle Frontier.

HeartGold & SoulSilver arc

The ship made a brief cameo appearance in All About Arceus III as one of the locations where Silver and his Weavile discovered a Plate, receiving one from the ship's captain.
