Route 36 in Gold and Silver

Route 36 (Japanese: ３６ばんどうろ Route 36) is a route in central Johto connecting Route 37, Violet City, and National Park. The northern entrance to the Ruins of Alph is located at eastern end of the route. The route also contains a shortcut to Route 35.

Route description

Ecruteak-Violet

Heading south from Ecruteak, Route 36 is split in half by a series of trees. The western half proceeds south, passing a Trainer duo before merging with the eastern half southwest of a grass patch that blankets the southern portion of the eastern half. Now one route, Route 36 continues south, turning to the east and becoming extremely narrow as it meets the Route 35 connector path. At this junction, Trainers have encountered Sudowoodo several times, using a SquirtBottle to move the Pokémon. In the games, the SquirtBottle can only be obtained after the player has obtained the Plain Badge.

East of the junction, a man will give away the move Rock Smash in the form of TM08 in Generation II or HM06 in Generation IV, however in Generation II the Sudowoodo must first be cleared. To his northeast on Thursdays, Arthur of the Week Siblings will give Trainers a Hard Stone the first time they meet him, and a Careless Ribbon the second time and all others (Generation IV only). South of this point is the north entrance to the Ruins of Alph, which also has an entrance on Route 32.

The route continues due east before turning south as it arrives in the west side of Violet.

Route 35 connector

This path is an extension of Route 36 that links Route 36 to Route 35 and the National Park. Heading south from its northern terminus at the "Sudowoodo Junction," the route curves west, passing Schoolboy Alan and a grass patch before arriving at a T-intersection. To the north is another Trainer, an Ice Berry tree, and the east entrance to the National Park. To the south is Route 35 (however, without Cut, this path is a dead end).

In Pokémon Crystal, Suicune appears on the overworld near the Ice Berry tree, but flees if the player gets close.

Route 36 briefly appeared in All About Arceus II, where Gold and Bugsy traveled through the route while pursuing Arceus, eventually leading them to the Ruins of Alph.

Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys

Route 36 appeared in A Huge Mysterious Tree!!. After learning that the Pokémon Summit was in threat of being cancelled due to the route junction between Violet, Goldenrod, and Ecruteak being blocked, Gold and Whitney traveled there to get rid of the giant tree that was blocking the route. Upon arrival, they saw that the people who had been unable to proceed had set up camps and stalls near the giant tree. However, Gold and Whitney's attacks only caused the tree to start moving and reveal itself as a giant Sudowoodo. When Sudowoodo displayed dislike towards Whitney's Cleffa's Squirt Bottle, Gold realized it was actually a Rock type and decided to use water on it, causing it to shrink down and reveal a normal-sized Sudowoodo that had covered itself in dried mud to make itself look bigger. Gold then caught the Sudowoodo, and the battle experience allowed his Totodile and Pidgey to evolve into Croconaw and Pidgeotto.

Trivia

Route 36 in Crystal

• In Pokémon Crystal, a small patch of grass was added to the route in the area north of the entrance to the Ruins of Alph, allowing the player to catch the Pokémon of this route on their first visit to Violet City. The levels of the wild Pokémon were adjusted for this earlier availability. This patch of grass is absent in Gold, Silver, and their remakes.
