Although the Trace page says Trace (in Generation VI) affects the left-most Pokémon and shifts right as they faint, in my experience it is either completely random or a different method entirely. Moments ago I used Trace to find a Hidden Ability Nidoran, catching the far left one, which ended up having a different ability than what Trace claimed - Trace does not specifically target the leftmost Pokémon. So I was Max Raiding a Galarian Darumaka just now, when I noticed that my Trace Gardevoir didn't trace its Ability, which can only be Inner Focus. Curious, I searched this page and noticed, that while Inner Focus isn't in the list on untraceable Abilities, its evolved form's Zen Mode is. Which led me to believe that you can't trace any Ability, if it's the same slot as evolved form's untraceable Ability. In case of Darumaka, I suspect it's Inner Focus is actually a Hidden Ability slot, which means it technically is a "Zen Mode Inner Focus", so to say. So if an Ability is programmed to turn into an untraceable Ability, it cannot be copied even if it's allowed in other instances. I will evolve this Darumaka and check if its Ability is indeed Zen Mode. Kikugi (talk) 03:27, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
:Okay, it indeed has Zen Mode. Which means Trace will not copy an Ability if it's the same slot as an evo's untraceable Ability, even if the original Ability would be still allowed otherwise. So if this Darumaka was programmed to have Gorilla Tactics (allowed Ability) after evolution, its Inner Focus would have been traced, but since it's Zen Mode, it wasn't. Can someone please confirm this in their game? Also to check whether it was the case before Gen VIII... Kikugi (talk) 03:33, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Untraceable Abilities

Protosynthesis cannot be Traced
Was just EV training a Gardevoir with Scream Tails, and it appears as though Trace does not seem to work on Protosynthesis. Even if Protosynthesis activated (whether from a held Booster Energy or my Gardevoir using Sunny Day), Gardevoir would not Trace the ability. Presumably, the same also applies to Quark Drive, though I do not have a Trace Gardevoir handy on my Violet save file to check. ShermTank7272 (talk) 17:51, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
