The story starts in [[Pallet Town]], where a small group of children are trying to capture a {{p|Nidorino}}. Seeing the children failing to do so, {{adv|Red}} approaches and teaches the children how to catch a Pokémon. Red brings out his {{p|Poliwhirl}}, and uses {{m|Water Gun}} on the Nidorino, before throwing a [[Poké Ball]] and succeeding to capture it. On their way back home, the children start to ask Red about {{adv|Professor Oak}}, the great Pokémon Professor. Stubbornly, Red suggests he is better than this Professor Oak, but keeps the doubt at the back of his mind.
In [[Pallet Town]], a group of young children are attempting to catch a {{p|Nidorino}}. After failing numerous times, a boy named {{adv|Red}} walks up to the group and explains that if they want to catch a Pokémon, they must weaken it in battle first. He then sends out his very own [[Poli]]whirl to deal with the Nidorino. After the Poliwhirl weakens it by using {{m|Water Gun}}, Red throws a {{i|Poké Ball}} at the Nidorino and successfully catches him. Red then [[Breaking the fourth wall|breaks the fourth wall]] by telling the reader that he is the best [[Pokémon Trainer]] around, explains the concept of Pokémon to the reader, and tells the reader that he will catch all the Pokémon in the {{pkmn|world}}.  


Red says goodbye to the younger children and departs for home. Lost in thought, Red accidentally bumps into a {{tc|Team Rocket Grunt}}, prompting the thug to scold him. Red notices some [[Poké Ball]]s hanging on one of the Grunt's belts, and realizing they are [[Pokémon Trainer]]s, he decides to follow them. After some time, the Team Rocket Grunts stop, and Red hides in some bushes nearby. He overhears the group speaking about a 'Phantom Pokémon' inhabiting the western forest. After Team Rocket leaves for the western forest, Red runs home to grab an armful of Poké Ball to be used to capture the mysterious new Pokémon.  
While heading home, one of the boys in the group asks Red if he knows {{adv|Professor Oak}}, and then tells Red that they can learn a thing or two from him. Red then tells the group that they do not need that "old nut," as Red can teach them everything they need to know. Another member of the group then tells Red that {{adv|Blue|Oak's grandson}} is one of the best Trainers around and that he was taught by Oak himself. Red then tells the group that he does not care who this powerful Trainer is, as Red can easily defeat him anyway. The group then says goodbye to Red, and he continues to walk home. Lost in thought, he accidentally runs into a group of {{tc|Team Rocket Grunt}}s. One of the Grunts scolds him, and, as they walk away, he notices a pair of [[Great Ball]]s on each of their belts. Curious, Red decides to follow them and hides in the tall grass, where he overhears a conversation between the Grunts about a {{adv|Mew|mysterious Pokémon}} in the [[Western Forest|West Wood]]. After hearing this, Red is determined to catch it and runs home to get some Poké Balls.  


Entering the forest, Red spots another Trainer in the forest battling a rare glowing Pokémon, {{p|Mew}}. The other Trainer, {{adv|Blue}}, sends his {{p|Charmander}} out to attack the wild Pokémon. {{p|Mew}} easily evades Charmander's attacks, however, prompting Blue to recall his Pokémon. Shocked that Blue surrendered so quickly, Red impulsively comes out of the bushes and tells Blue off. Determined to not let the Pokémon escape, Red chooses Poliwhirl to battle against Mew, commanding it to use {{m|Water Gun}}, but Mew suddenly counters the attack, knocking out Poliwhirl. Mew leaves, leaving Red and Poliwhirl in a daze. Blue steps in and tells Red that he made a foolish choice in battling Mew, as Mew was superior in strength; Blue then leaves. Later, Team Rocket, still hot on Mew's trail, bump into Red for a second time. One of the members starts yelling at Red, but the others remind the grunt that finding Mew is more important than the kid.
When Red enters the West Wood, he sees a {{adv|Blue|Trainer}} with a {{TP|Blue|Charmander}} battling the mysterious Pokémon Red was searching for. Intrigued, Red decides to watch the intense battle. However, after a short while, the Trainer recalls the Charmander before the battle is over. Red gets mad and scolds the Trainer for it. He then sends out his Poliwhirl. However, the Poliwhirl is quickly beaten by the mysterious Pokémon, which leaves Red dumbfounded. The Trainer tells Red that good Trainers know what their limitations are, and then he walks away. The group of Team Rocket Grunts appear, and when they notice that the ground is all burned up, one of the Grunts demand answers from Red, but another Grunt reminds him that they are in the Woods for the {{adv|Mew}}, not for questioning kids.


With the sun setting on the outskirts of Pallet Town, Red heads home after a long day. Spotting Professor Oak's lab, he decides to go and meet Professor Oak, and hopefully be given some good advice. Red rang Professor Oak's doorbell. The story ends with Red finding the door unlocked.
After healing his Poliwhirl, Red returns to Pallet Town, and when he sees [[Professor Oak's Laboratory]], he decides that the only way to become a good Pokémon Trainer is through Oak, and so Red rings the doorbell of the lab.
