::Screw Chronicles dub. I hate how they're missing important facts from original and adding their own (I don't consider those dub-added things as canon, however). Legend of Thunder is a main victim of it. I wouldn't be surprised if Ritchie'd be revealed to be from Pallet Town or some other actual town in Japanese version. But it's very unlikely, so I think we'll just have that random Frodomar City as the Ritchie's hometown forever. Unless writers decide to revive him. --Maxim 17:11, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

::::::Recently watched the episode, and I can confirm that, given the way it was spoken, I assumed that "Frodomar" was something Ritchie made up on the spot.  He hesitated a second, and it actually came out as a mumbled "Fr*d*mar" (with the "*'s" standing in for schwa's).  I actually laughed, I thought it was both clever and hilarious.  Perhaps his home town could be listed as "Unconfirmed" with a footnote to an explanation? ~ShinyAeon

Red/Green versions...
Well, I was thinking about this randomly and the fact that the original versions of Pokémon were the Red and Green versions, along with Ritchie's outfit being green... As we know, the opening scene of the first episode uses Red version's Nidorino vs. Gengar as opposed to Green/Blue version's Jigglypuff vs. Gengar, indicating Ash's journey as being the "Red version" (And hey, the name Ash actually comes from the Red version, if it came from Green/Blue he'd be Gary) may indicate that the signifigance of Ritchie's green outfit is that he may be intended as the hero of the "Green version". I was wondering whether something like this may be worthy of going in the trivia section of the page? --Sato 12:43, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Rethinking the Ritchie/Richie issue
The overwhelming majority of official materials (including ALL Books and Magazines, EToP manga, CC & Subtitles for most episodes and Pokemon.com) uses the spelling "Richie". "Ritchie" is seen in Pokemon Puzzle League (and allegedly Closed Captions for Chronicles but I'm not sure if that's true). I'd quicker believe that "Ritchie" is a mispelling done in PPL. EVERY other merchandise uses the spelling without the 't'. That can't be a "gremial mistake". --Maxim 12:12, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

:Uh, as far as I can tell, the game made no error.  Most of the "books and magazines" are created by third parties and are prone to errors (mixing up Kenny and Kyle for example), Ritchie's Electric Tale appearance predated the game and the game could in fact be correcting the manga's misspelling, and the fact that most Chronicles captioning actually spelled it WITH the T shows that the game was very likely right.  Besides, the fact that the game does not use the term "Prima" despite anime basis shows that the game developers knew what they were doing.  --Shiningpikablu252 18:24, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

::But I haven't seen a SINGLE merchandise using that spelling. Not to mention that CC for the original episodes with Ri(t)chie spell his name without the "t". I wouldn't trust Chronicles here so much. This is the same series that called Eusine "Eugene" and Jackson "Vincent". And the fact that PPL corrected one of anime's errors doesn't have to mean that they couldn't make an error by themselves. As I said, every merchandise (and my secret file which comes indirectly from PUSA, I hope that you believe in its existence) spells the name without the "t". Gremial mistake? --Maxim 15:20, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

:::Eusine doesn't even appear in Chronicles; why would Eusine appear if there's no Suicune involved?  I'll give you Vincent, and also Kam and Khan as well as someone masquerading as Brock's mother, but those mistakes were all earlier on in Chronicles.  I also believe I saw a "Richie" spelling in the CC in one of the earlier Chronicles as well.

:::The CC spellings that list "Ritchie", on the other hand, occured later on in Chronicles, and errors in general became fewer the later on into Chronicles we went.  Probably the biggest error in the second half of Chronicles, 4Kids not catching Mt. Ember, could be considered minor by the first half's standards.  Honestly, if "Ritchie" were indeed the wrong spelling, they wouldn't have utilized it at all in Chronicles, much less in the half of Chronicles that didn't have major errors.  There's no way someone would switch from a correct spelling to an incorrect one in about the same timeframe the major errors stopped.  --Shiningpikablu252 17:32, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
::::: So some random character was in the Raikou special? Anyway Pokemon.com has Richie as the spelling, and even though I would hate to spell it as Richie, because I'm used to the "t" spelling, it might be the official spelling.--Dman dustin 17:46, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

::::::You do realize Pokémon.com's not always right themselves, right?  They've called Thatcher "Batcher", Ada "Audrey", Roman "Charleton", Kylie "Charlene", and Melodi "Maria" in their episode guides.  Trust me, Pokémon.com's not the best resource to use when it comes to character names, given that their mailbag is more reliable than their episode guides...--Shiningpikablu252 18:00, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Hiroshi, the meaning of
According to Behind the Name, one of the most reliable sites for name meanings, "Hiroshi" means "tolerant, generous" or "prosperous".  Here's the link: http://www.behindthename.com/name/hiroshi

In that case, I suspect the name "Ritchie" was chosen in English because the first element in "Richard" is "rich" - which is ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rik, meaning "ruler," but later was influenced by its cognates *riki (Frankish) and riche (Old French) and gained the meaning "prosperous." Link: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=rich&allowed_in_frame=0

That would make Ritchie/Hiroshi akin to Misty/Kasumi, an attempt at direct translation based on meaning. ShinyAeon 17:20, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

:Because it was originally written in Japanese, and the English version goes off of that. Occasionally the 4kids dub liked to add completely new lines in to either match the mouth movements, or to censor something that they considered inappropriate. In this case, it was probably just something they made up to match the mouth movement. <span style="color:#C00;">★</span><span style="color:#C00;">Jo the Marten</span><span style="color:#C00;">★</span> <span style="color:#C00;">ಠ_ಠ</span><span style="color:#90C870;">♥</span> 01:02, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Pupitar

Why does Pupitar have Grace as one of its nicknames? - unsigned comment from Kojiro (talkcontribs)

Name?

Where is his name spelt with a t? --FabuVinny 16:46, 30 March 2006 (CST)

Starter Pokémon?

Could it possibly have been Zippo? After all, Ritchie does seem to be native to Kanto, and Delia and Oak mention that only Ash started with Pikachu due to special circumstances. Tom Temprotran 22:50, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

it could have possibly been zippo since even after it evolved it was still obedient to ritchie unlike ash's charizardRitchie

3 More Pokémon

Isn't it worthy mentioning that Ritchie had 3 more Pokémon in the Kanto League. Possible ones include Spearow, Tentacool and Rhydon. I'm surprised that no one pointed this out. This should be also mentioned that in Electric Pikachu Boogaloo manga Zippo was already a Charizard when Ash battled Ritchie. The battle between two Charizards was eh, bloody. --Maxim 17:56, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

The Rhydon belonged to Asunta, his opponent. Nobody knows whether the Spearow or Tentacool belonged to Ritchie, so it's never mentioned. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to at least mention how either Spearow or Tentacool belongs to him, but nobody knows which one does. --PAK Man 22:58, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Mispelling of name

I've looked through several Pokémon books, several Pokémon websites, and even looked at the closed captioning of the episodes that Ritchie was in and they all spelt his name like this: "Richie". Should this be changed? I know that the page is titled the correct way to spell "Ritchie" but I think it sould be the other way. --ケンジガール 06:50, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, we've gone with the books in the past... It's what makes the badge in the Orange Islands the Coral-Eye Badge. If you can scan the book, I suppose that'd be proof enough to say that a move is needed. TTEchidna 08:09, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Here's the proof. It's a scan from the book "Extreme Pokémon" and it's says its an official guide book. I circled Richie's name.

--ケンジガール 09:16, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, that's good enough for me. Now of course is... damn, how many pages link here? TTEchidna 15:48, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
I brought it up in March of last year and we're only dealing with it now?
The "What links here" page lists 111 links to Ritchie. Does Pie know how to work Bulbabot? --FabuVinny T-C-S 16:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm opposed to this idea. Puzzle League clearly spells his name as Ritchie. Additionally, the closed captioning of at least two Chronicles episodes with Ritchie in it go with "Ritchie" as opposed to "Richie". I wouldn't advise a movement, lest a move war ensue...--Shiningpikablu252 16:29, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

(Just for the record, I've went ahead and synchronized Ritchie's name and removed wording conflict. Only the "also" reference on Ritchie and the Trigun character on Kenji Nojima's bio were not changed to Ritchie since the former is regarded as an alternate spelling listing and the latter is an unrelated character. --Shiningpikablu252 16:49, 16 August 2007 (UTC))

Official Pokemon.com website spells his name as "Richie" in EVERY episode he was in; plus, come on, Chronicles? First of all, that series doesn't even have subs on DVD release, CCs aren't always believeable, and, going by that logic, you should also say that Eugene was misspelled as Eusine in Master Quest and Pokemon Crystal...--AtoMan 12:17, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

The games that include him spell it Richie as well so...Ritchie

Um...I don't think Richie isn't spelled that way in any games...and this is also an old comment.--Tavisource 22:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
i meant Ritchie wit a "t"Ritchie

I've got that book too and I found a couple of other mistakes in it, so maybe "Richie" is also a mistake. Taromon777 22:05, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Frodomar City?

I don't remember anything like that. --Maxim 14:38, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Watch Celebi and Joy. The dubbed version of course. --ケンジガール 16:47, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Screw Chronicles dub.
Well I did state that it was only mentioned in the dub. --ケンジガール 19:13, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah. And I did see it. But I still hate 4Kids's Chronicles thing. --Maxim 19:32, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
someone mentioned that he said Frodomar city because he lied so he won distort time because he was sent back in time with celebi so...its kind of confusing but i dont think ritchie's full info will be revealed we are going to have to stick with frodomar city. Ritchie
Recently watched the episode, and I can confirm that, given the way it was spoken, I assumed that "Frodomar" was something Ritchie made up on the spot. ~ShinyAeon
I agree with ShinyAeon, it's clear that it was intended to sound like he made it up on the spot.

Unpopularity

Um, Im sorry to interrupt and I know its not my place to go around asking stupid questions, but I wanted to ask why Richie is so unpopular in the fandom? TheRampardosMaster 23:54, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't have a solid answer to this, but I believe it's because many people believe he's an unoriginal character. The allegation has been that he is an Ash clone, and there is circumstantial evidence to support that, with the most obvious being that they catch the same types of Pokémon. Both have Pikachu, Butterfree, Charmander/Charmeleon, Taillow, and Ritchie has a Pupitar, while Ash temporarily took care of a Larvitar. That's what I think, anyway. --PAK Man Talk 23:59, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Also many people have a problem with him being so smart and making everyone around him seem dumber than they are. --ケンジガール 00:27, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

I dunno, I like him... Maki 07:12, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree, he is just a clone. Cerberus 20:35, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Of course he's a clone, that's what his character was designed to be. --Shinin 16:22, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't know. Ritchie's my favorite rival of Ash's. I always thought he was cool, even for a clone character. --いぬみみ 03:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

All of his known pokemon are either pokemon ash had or took care of(larvitar)-Darkmaster0

Manga Info

Should we have a category for the manga for Pokémon, or is it unnecessary? ---ht14 14:22 (GTC) 20 February, 2008

What do you mean? --Theryguy512 21:07, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
He means should we have a section on the table for Ritchie's Pokémon in the manga. I say no. The only difference in the manga is that Zippo is a Charizard and Sparky's name is... I forgot. Chu---something... --'ケンジ'ガール 03:33, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Richie

I read a pokemon book yesterday hisname was writtn as Richie.--Davidaipom 10:56, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Question

Question: why is the image in the article "unsatisfactory?" ~ShinyAeon 2/22/09

Because it is a .jpg file. It needs to be be reuploaded in a .png format. That is why most of the pictures are tagged. — THE TROM — 06:01, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Possible Trivia

Is it worth mentioning that his Japanese name translation ("far and wide") is a line in the first theme song ("Searching far and wide")? --Galladeon 11:06, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Well, that interests me. Go for it. — THE TROM — 11:09, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
No...and here's why: "searching far and wide is from the English song. Why is that important if that's his Japanese name? -Sketch 11:31, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
I definitely concur with Sketch! --Maxim 11:45, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Uh, as far as I can tell, the game made no error.
But I haven't seen a SINGLE merchandise using that spelling.
Eusine doesn't even appear in Chronicles; why would Eusine appear if there's no Suicune involved? I'll give you Vincent, and also Kam and Khan as well as someone masquerading as Brock's mother, but those mistakes were all earlier on in Chronicles. I also believe I saw a "Richie" spelling in the CC in one of the earlier Chronicles as well.
The CC spellings that list "Ritchie", on the other hand, occured later on in Chronicles, and errors in general became fewer the later on into Chronicles we went.
So some random character was in the Raikou special? Anyway Pokemon.com has Richie as the spelling, and even though I would hate to spell it as Richie, because I'm used to the "t" spelling, it might be the official spelling.--Dman dustin 17:46, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
You do realize Pokémon.com's not always right themselves, right? They've called Thatcher "Batcher", Ada "Audrey", Roman "Charleton", Kylie "Charlene", and Melodi "Maria" in their episode guides. Trust me, Pokémon.com's not the best resource to use when it comes to character names, given that their mailbag is more reliable than their episode guides...--Shiningpikablu252 18:00, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

why...

why do we have pages for sparky and Zippo but none for the rest of his pokemon?--Supermon 12:53, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Evee"not cannon"?

just because it is only methined in the dub, how does it not make it cannon? is there something bad about the dub? I mean seriously that is such snobby attitude --Archerboy58 (talk) 20:51, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Because it was originally written in Japanese, and the English version goes off of that. Occasionally the 4kids dub liked to add completely new lines in to either match the mouth movements, or to censor something that they considered inappropriate. In this case, it was probably just something they made up to match the mouth movement. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 01:02, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
