Magcargo (Japanese: マグカルゴ Magcargot) is a dual-type Fire/Rock Pokémon.
It evolves from Slugma starting at level 38.
Biology
Physiology
Magcargo are large, snail-like Fire-type Pokémon that seem to consist almost entirely out of magma, much like its pre-evolution. However, it has gained a hard shell that is made out of hardened magma. This shell seems to have a circular-shape and has small holes in it that spurts out small flames. This shell is somewhat thin and can flake off easily.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Magcargo's body is over 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to its magma body, it is able to use many Template:Type2 moves. It can also learn Recover.
Behavior
Magcargo is said to return to its original size by dipping itself in magma.
Habitat
To keep itself from hardening, Magcargo prefers to stay near something very hot like a volcano.

Magcargo's shell is actually its skin that hardened as a result of cooling. Its shell is very brittle and fragile - just touching it causes it to crumble apart. This Pokémon returns to its original size by dipping itself in magma.

Trivia
- Magcargo is the only pre-Generation IV Pokémon to be obtainable in almost every game since its debut (this includes side games, many Pokémon such as Pikachu appear in every main series games, but are missing from certain side games). However, it has not made an appearance in Pokémon Rumble, due to its exclusiveness to Generation I and IV Pokémon only.
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Magcargo.
- Despite the fact Magcargo's shell crumbles easily, in the anime it retracts into its shell and protects itself from damage.
- Magcargo's body is over 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which should be hot enough to melt flesh. However, it has made contact with Pokémon many times in the anime and none of them felt any burning from its body. This trait is shared with Ponyta and Rapidash.
Origin
Magcargo is based on a snail with a body of lava and a shell of rock. It may also be based on the Cherufe, evil creatures of rock and magma that inhabit the magma pools found deep within Chilean volcanoes. They are the main sources of earthquakes in Chile.
Name origin
Magcargo's name is a combination of magma, intrusive molten rock, and escargot, the French word for snail. The word cargo can also be found, referring to the shell it carries. The same is true for its Japanese name.
