Murkrow (Japanese: ヤミカラス Yamikarasu) is a dual-type Dark/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation II.
It evolves into Honchkrow when exposed to a Dusk Stone.
Biology
Physiology
Murkrow is a small bird Pokémon with black feathers. Murkrow's shaggy, feathery tail bears the resemblance of the end of a broom, especially with the small, short, red-colored rod-like beginning segment of it. Murkrow has a crooked, yellow beak that resembles a witch's nose, a feather-crest that resembles a witch's hat and semi-circular eyes with red pupils. Murkrow’s neck seems thin in comparision to the size of the head it supports, with an extension of feathers on its neck like a collar. Murkrow has four toes on its yellow feet, three forward and one backward.
Gender differences
Females have a smaller feather crest.
Special abilities
Being a Dark-type, it has most of the abilities and attributes that are standard to them. It also has an effect of unluckiness about it, but it mostly applies to its opponents. It's also possible to train one to repeat words like a real world parrot (as seen under Team Rocket's ownership), though Chatot is more famous for this ability.
Behavior
Murkrow have a fondness for anything that's sparkly and has been known to steal things such as jewelry from people and hide them in all sorts of secret locations. It is these kleptomaniac tendencies that make Murkrow rivals with Meowth. Whenever a Murkrow finds itself being chased, it will lead the attacker to a dark mountain trail where the foe is bound to get itself lost. In the anime, it is said that when a Murkrow flies over someone's head late at night, something bad will happen.
Habitat
Murkrow usually live in forests or swamps, but they have been known to move into cities.
Diet

Gold, Silver, and Crystal all have Murkrow. However, Silver is the only one who actually has it on his team, which has since evolved into a Honchkrow. Gold caught one at the start of Volume 8 while Crystal caught hers as one of the many Pokémon she captured for Professor Oak's research.
Karen is later seen with two Murkrow. Like Silver, she uses them for flight transport.

Trivia
- Murkrow shares the same species name with Sableye. They are both known as Darkness Pokémon.
- Despite being a Generation II Pokémon, it was actually only available in Kanto in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. The same is true for Slugma and Houndour. All three can be obtained in Johto via the Safari Zone in Generation IV.
- Murkrow has a higher Speed stat than its evolution.
- Murkrow's wings in its Diamond and Pearl, Platinum, and Generation III sprites are much smaller than its wings in its HeartGold and SoulSilver sprites.
Origin
Murkrow resembles a crow. Its crest can be taken to resemble a pointed hat, and its tail the bristles of a broom, giving it a resemblance to a witch in flight. In regards to its Generation IV evolution, it can also be taken to resemble a gang member under a head Honchkrow.
Name origin
Murkrow's name is a combination of murky and crow. Also possibly a combination of murder, in this case meaning a group of crows, and crow.
Its Japanese name is a combination of 闇 yami, dark, and 烏 karasu, crow.
In other languages
- German: Kramurx - From Krähe (crow) and Murks (botch, noun).
- French: Cornebre - From corneille (crow) and Ténèbre (darkness).
- Korean: 니로우 Nirou
- Chinese (Taiwan): 黑暗鴉 Hēi Àn Yā - "Dark black crow".
