Trivia
"Kara-Tee" was Machop's original English name. This name is a corruption of karate, a fighting style.
Origin
Machop appears to be based on a bodybuilder.
Name origin
Machop's name may be a combination of chop and macho, which is Spanish for overly masculine or chauvanist. Macho has come to mean tough or masculine in English. Like Mr. Mime, this is not reflected in the gender distribution (even though the females are still rarer than males). Wanriky is a corruption of 腕力 wanryoku (the 力 is pronounced riki in some words), physical strength.
In other languages
- German: Machollo
- French: Machoc - Macho has a similar meaning to the English. Choc means shock, or - perhaps more appropriately in this case - impact.
- Korean: 알통몬 Altongmon
