Biology
Physiology
Groudon is a massive, bipedal, dinosaur-like creature with a gray underside and covered in red, segmented plates of thick skin which act as armor. There are also spikes that run along the sides of its head, body, and tail. It has four claws on each hand, three claws on each foot, and four dozer-like blades on the end of its tail. Groudon also has blue marking stripes inside the seams of its armor plating which can only be seen when Groudon is glowing with power. If not, they appear black.
Gender differences
Groudon is a genderless species.
Special abilities
Groudon emanates heat, evaporating surrounding water and causing constant bright sunlight similar to the effects of Sunny Day. The sunlight lasts even after Groudon has left the vicinity. It is thought to have been the creator of land in the Pokémon world. It can heat up the air around it to cause static charge, enabling it to use some electric moves. Groudon is also a natural burrower that can dig its way quickly into the land and can even bore through solid rock.
Behavior
Slow, stoic, and heavy (2094 pounds--a little over a ton), this super-heavyweight created the land, according to Hoenn legend. It sleeps underground in magma chambers, and causes volcanoes to erupt when it awakens. It is said to appear before those with shining silver spirits. If encounters its rival Kyogre, Groudon will engage Kyogre in a fight to the death.
Habitat
Groudon sleeps miles below the ground (occasionally in deep, hot magma pockets), and is therefore nearly impossible to find in the wild without awakening it.

In the anime
Major appearances
In Gaining Groudon and The Scuffle of Legends, a Groudon battles against Kyogre.
Minor appearances
In Jirachi: Wish Maker, a former Team Magma scientist, working as a magician at the carnival, wishes to use Jirachi to bring forth a Groudon. However, what he ended up with was not a Groudon, but a manifestation of pure evil that had the appearance of a Groudon. At the end, Jirachi used Doom Desire to destroy the false Groudon.
In Malice In Wonderland!, a Groudon appeared as an illusion created by Mismagius.
A Groudon makes a cameo during the opening of The Rise of Darkrai when it awakens from the ground during a volcanic explosion.
A Groudon also appears in the opening scenes of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.
In the manga
Awakening Groudon was the main mission of Team Magma, so they could expand the land. Groudon was finally awakened when Team Magma and Aqua formed a temporary truce to be able to go underwater. Wallace, Brawly, and Roxanne tried to stop the Pokémon's advance but failed due to the interventions of Mack, Courtney, and Tabitha. Eventually, it reaches its destination: Sootopolis City, to battle Kyogre, which it did for days on end until Ruby, with the aid of a reformed Courtney and his own, Rayquaza-controlling father, managed to quell it. Afterwards, it cut its ties with Kyogre and went to resume its slumber at the bottom of Mt. Chimney. It is shown afterwards that this restored the volcanic activities that Team Aqua had earlier annulled.

Other appearances
Groudon is obtainable as a Poké Ball Pokémon. Due to its tremendous size, it takes up a lot of the stage, making its attack almost inescapable. It uses Overheat to immolate itself in a fiery aura, causing anyone who comes into contact with it to be set on fire and sent flying.
Trophy Information
"A Continent Pokémon. In ancient times, it brought down droughts to save people who had suffered from floods. It is normally found in the profound depths of the earth, where it slumbers in magma. With a mighty roar, it uses Earthquake to mow down enemies. In battle, it summons sunlight to bathe the area. It once had an epic battle with Kyogre."

NPC appearances
- Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Groudon is the focus of the second Bonus Field on the Ruby Field. Groudon will throw rocks down from the ceiling to add obstacles to the field and create an eruption to surround itself in pillars of fire. The rocks take three hits to break while the fire pillars take four hits to break. During this time, Groudon will also throw fire balls at the Poké Ball to stall it further. The eruption does break any rocks still on the field. Groudon must be hit 15 times in three minutes to win. After beating the round twice, Groudon will be captured.
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: When the player visits Steam Cave for the first time, Uxie creates a fake Groudon, hoping that it would keep the player's team away from knowing Fogbound Lake's existence in order to protect the Time Gear it has been guarding. After the credits, a real Groudon appears in Shimmer Desert as the guardian of the Terra Cymbal.

Trivia
Terrell's Groudon Costume
- Groudon is the heaviest Pokémon in existence to date.
- Groudon shares the same species name as Torterra; they are both known as the Continent Pokémon.
- Groudon has the highest Attack and base stat total of all Ground-type Pokémon.
- Although Groudon is genderless in the main games, it is referred to as a male in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness.
- Groudon is the only non-Fire-type Pokémon able to learn Fire Blast, Lava Plume, and Eruption by leveling up.
- In the anime it is portrayed as tall as a skyscraper, but in actual fact it's only 11'06", the same height as Arbok.
- However, as with all snake-based Pokémon, it would appear that Arbok's height is in fact its length.
- A Groudon costume is worn by Terrell in Pokémon Battle Revolution.
- Although Groudon is seen to be bathing in magma, Groudon can be afflicted by a burn.
- Groudon is one of two Pokémon that shares no types with other main series version mascots. The other is Venusaur.
- On the DVD cover of Jirachi: Wish Maker, Groudon is depicted in a normal state. However, the main storyline Groudon was not in a normal state at all, and was a fake or 'virus' Groudon.
- In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, before Michael can get to Makan, he has to fight Chobin. And, after defeating him, has to fight him again, only this time, Chobin is in a Robo Groudon which is a creation of Dr. Kaminko.
Origin
Groudon is modeled after the Earth's land and volcanoes and is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of Behemoth, the unconquerable primal master of the land. Its counterparts were Leviathan and Ziz. Just as Groudon is in conflict with Kyogre, it was said that at the end of time Behemoth and Leviathan would start a battle that would kill them both. However, the behemoth is usually depicted as a warthog/hippopotamus-like creature; in the same way that Kyogre is not based on traditional depictions of the leviathan. Instead, Groudon's appearance seems to have drawn inspiration from the Tyrannosaurus and from various species of Ankylosauria such as Euoplocephalus.
Name origin
Groudon's name appears to be a combination of "ground" and "don", which is Spanish for lord—hence, lord of the ground. The suffix -don is also used in the names of many dinosaurs and large animals, and means "tooth", and in fact the entire name may come from the Latin "troodon" meaning "wounding tooth". Groudon has large teeth, and also somewhat resembles a dinosaur. Although possibly a coincidence, its name also includes 土 do, ground, or "don", the Japanese onomatopoeia for a very loud crashing noise, which would be made by Groudon's feet when it walks.
