Magikarp Salesman
Does the Magikarp from the Magikarp salesman in the Pokémon Center by Mt. Moon have any advantages over a regular Magikarp? ShinyTalk | Contribs 00:50, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, you don't need to bother fishing? :P --Vladek
- Yeah, and by fishing you waste $200, while an estimate (to me) the idiot sells you Magikarp for $500... Agent 448δ | DP | ☆ 10:46, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- But does it have any other advantages, besides not having to fish? ShinyTalk | Contribs 12:20, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- I really doubt that, and I think that the scammer shown in the anime that keeps on selling Magikarp is based on that guy. TheBlazikenMaster 21:03, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- Well, that Magikarp really doesn't have any advantages both in the animé and in the game, as far as I tested. The stats are the same

You can't get the Old Rod until Vermilion, you spend at least $200 on Poké Balls, which don't have a sure chance of nabbing it, and then you have to train that Magikarp while training for an upcoming match with a Electric-type Gym Leader. So yes, there is an advantage. You get all of the extra time to train the Karp. TTEchidna 04:40, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

" How do you need that cited? It's the very first foreign dex entry you get."
This is how: There is no specific information about which game this trivia is referring to. Trivia sections should have useful information, and I don't really find this useful if we don't include where whoever posted that trivia got that information from. No I don't mean cite it like they do on Wikipedia, I just want mention of the game this foreign etnry is from. And I also believe this trivia is misleading. Bounce
Magikarp can learn Bounce from the move tutor in Pokémon Platinum. If you don't believe me, go here and look at the tutor list. --Baby G (talk to me) (see my edits) 00:38, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- I checked and still don't believe you. How do you know they're not wrong or being mistaken? A site ran by a limited amount of people can be wrong sometimes. I would like to see a better proof than this. Serebii is a great site, but I know it has been wrong sometimes, so it's not perfect. TheBlazikenMaster 00:44, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I at least know that Gyarados can learn it, because one of my friends traded me a Gyarados with Bounce that works on PBR. Maybe I'll get him to try to teach a Magikarp Bounce and see if it works for him or not. --Baby G (talk to me) (see my edits) 20:52, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- It's true. Maybe it should be noted that ChoiceBounceKarp is going to be a serious contender in the metagame. Vaati000 01:38, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- Nobody else is denying it, but think of it this way. Isn't it strange that a Pokémon that weak can learn Bounce? Sure, it makes sense since Magikarp can bounce around, but what I have hard times believing is such a weak Pokémon can learn a move with 85 base damage. TheBlazikenMaster 15:17, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
- Come to think of it several weak Pokémon can learn strong moves. Let's face it, things change, and there is nothing to do about it. Only legendaries keep their signature moves forever, eventually other Pokémon can learn some other Pokémon's signature move. It's kinda like the fact for weak Pokémon, eventually all Pokémon will learn good moves. TheBlazikenMaster 15:25, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Magikarp base speed
Sorry, double post. But I have my Magikarp right in front of me,and it says in her stats "Speed - 116". What do you mean by "Due to its low stats (Speed, however, at 80, being the highest)",her status screen clearly says 116? Lovely Rose 23:10, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- Base stats =/= actual stats. The Dark Fiddler - Nos hablamos? 23:11, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
Oh..Okay then! Just making sure Lovely Rose 23:14, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
Speed stat = [((IV + 2 * Base + (EV/4)) * Level/100) + 5] * Nature, where IV is the IV in that specific stat, Base is the base stat, and nature is either 0.9 (for one that lowers) or 1.1 (for one that raises). With a neutral nature and absolute crap for IVs (a 0 in Speed, lowest you can get), your Magikarp's Speed at level 50, without any training would be 85. However, I assume it's not yet level 50, at least slightly trained, and doesn't have a 0 in its IVs for Speed. The base stats give you an idea of where the stats will fall (such as, your Magikarp's not gonna likely have 100+ Attack until sometime around level 70) but do not state the exact stats. TTEchidna 18:41, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

- TTEchidna my Magikarp is well over level 50,I think she's almost lv 60,by the way. Lovely Rose 01:45, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Turning Magikarp to Mew
The text says "A glitch in the early Japanese games, Red, Green, and Blue, allowed players to transform their Magikarp into a Mew. However, this Mew was not registered in the Pokédex, did not have the same stats nor moves, and caused some major glitches to the player's items pack." Is this actually true? If so, what is the glitch out of interest? Bardock 23:07, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
- I was about to ask the same thing. Seriously, a claim such as this should be backed-up thoroughly. Redstar 17:05, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
- I know that I'm posting this three years later, but I just tried the glitch and it is real. It's a Select button glitch like the Dokokashira door glitch. What you do is put a Magikarp into the 1st slot in your party, then go into Items and press Select on the 13th item, then press B twice. Then get into a battle and go to switch Pokémon, and press A next to Magikarp. It will become Mew. However, I would highly advise against doing this (especially now that the Mew glitch allows you to get a Mew), as this causes major glitches and messes up the Pokédex, items, and possibly other things. Mew's name becomes a string of seemingly random characters, and (on my game at least), her ID No. and Original Trainer change as well so you can't rename her. She does not have Mew's attacks (I don't know what determines her attacks... in my game she got Fire Punch). I'm not sure if her stats are correct or not, but her HP is glitched, and she has a ton of experience (sending her into battle will level her up to level 101).
- Glitches to the Pokédex include the following:
- - Some Pokémon that you've never seen become registered as seen, and some become registered as owned
- - Some Pokémon that you have owned become registered as not being owned, or not being seen
- - Some Pokémon that you've seen become registered as owned, or not being seen
- - Some empty spaces become registered as owned (you can't view the Pokédex entries for them though)
- - Mew does not show up in the Pokédex... instead slot No. 151 becomes registered as owned, but remains an empty space
- - A slot No. 152 appears as seen with the name ketsuban (MissingNo.) next to it. When viewed, it displays as No. 000
- As for items... the item in the first slot becomes glitched. Also, you can go below the Cancel button. There, the screen starts to get glitchy. You can view items you don't have (some can even be used), and you can see some of the beta items (Coin and ?????) and items that don't exist (they're just made up of random characters and glitched symbols) Dannyjenn 18:12, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- Edit - I was just playing around with this glitch some more... it turns out that you can turn any Pokémon in your party into Mew as long as Magikarp is the first Pokémon on the list. Also, supposedly it doesn't even need to be Magikarp, just any Pokémon with either Water as its only type or Water as its second type (although I haven't tried it with anyone other than Magikarp). Dannyjenn 19:07, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, it's a select button glitch documented from old Japanese select button glitch websites. Meowth346 (talk • contribs) made a brief reference to it on the Azure Heights forums back in 2001. Since the glitch was mentioned on GameFAQs by a "gunbladelad77", Paco81 and I tried to get the glitch to work last April, but we weren't able to get it to work (since we don't have a real Red and Green cartridge or a Japanese Blue cartridge). The game would freeze on the part when swapping the thirteenth item. Relatively recently "ginothepro" made that video on Youtube and posted a thread about it on the GCL forums. As the glitch seems to manipulate large portions of the Pokédex data, you likely won't be able to get Mew registered in the Pokédex, so you're much better off with something like the fossil conversion glitch.
- The Pokémon actually depends on the index number of the second type; meaning that you can use it to obtain other Pokémon such as Kangaskhan by using the Flying type (both Kangaskhan and the Flying type share an index number of 0x02). Unfortunately, while "ginothepro" and yourself got it to work on a real game, I still haven't been able to emulate it. However, I got the glitch to work using a slightly different method. I'll expand the section you added to list of glitches in Generation I and emphasize that it can be used with different types. For reference, I'll attach both videos, including my alternative method (I'd greatly appreciate if you could test it!). I've added some additional information in the comments. --Chickasaurus 21:33, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Trivia
I deleted a bunch of trivia that stated rules with exceptions (i.e., it appears with Gyarados in the anime, except in X, Y, Z, and it couldn't fill its movelist until it could.) Also a feebas comparison. Those aren't really trivia bits in the sense of 'oh, this is interesting.' They're just...random, compiled facts. -- evkl (need to talk?) 05:40, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Magikarp with moves other than Splash, Tackle, Flail, Dragon Rage and Rage
Surely if you were to breed two Gyarados's with the same four moves it would breed with those four moves?--Thomas Michael William Patrick Sales 15:15, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- Nope. If a Gyarados knows a move that's not in Magikarp's level-up movelist, the ensuing Magikarp will not know that move. The only moves you can get onto a hatched Magikarp by breeding are Tackle and Flail, and that's if both parents know the moves in question; Splash is its basic move, whereas it can't even learn Dragon Rage and Rage. --Shiningpikablu252 15:20, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Mistake in the trivia
"The Pokédex entries for Magikarp in Gold version and Platinum version contradict each other; Gold version says that Magikarp never jumps more than seven feet, whereas Platinum version states that it may jump over a mountain."
Gold version is saying it cannot jump more than seven feet HIGH, where as Platinum version explains that it jumps over a mountain over the course of multiple years, as in, while never jumping more than seven feet high at a time, it makes its way over the mountain in multiple jumps. And by multiple, I mean thousands. So anyways, they're not contradicting each other, they're stating two different points. Jump height, and determination.- unsigned comment from Notafan (talk • contribs)
- what? I'm pretty sure that the Platinum entry says that a Magikarp that already lived for a bunch of years (as in, an old one) can jump over a mountain, not that it jumps over it over the course of several years.--Liquid ICE (User:Cold)(page, talk) 12:03, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps, in the games' canon, the old Magikarp-Splash-over-a-mountain thing was a recent discovery. Also, the Gold entry doesn't specifically mention Splash, whereas this one does. Missingno. Master wants YOU! Join the Order of the Glitch! (my talk page) 13:30, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Should we...
Mention the meme "Use splash attak!" in the trivia? For those who don't know, its a looped video of Red and Blue battling with two magikarp that only know splash. I figured we should mention it since we mentioned "So I Heard You Liek Mudkipz". EpicShadow 17:13, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Shouldn't it be noted that before Gen. IV when it could learn bounce from move tutors, Magikarp couldn't damage any Ghost Types before?
Several other articles like Weedle and Caterpie has this as trivia.Naui 00:21, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
Case and point, Magikarp has never been able to learn bounce by TM, move tutor, or breeding. However as of Generation V it is able to learn it only from Dream World. So no. Frozen Fennec 00:27, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Base exp might be wrong
So on the experience page it said that magikarp used to have the lowest base exp at 20 but now the unova starters have the lowest base exp with 28 yet magikarps base exp is still listed as 20 on this page. Should this be fixed? FrankTheTank000 16:41, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Gen II, Fishing Guru
How is the size of a Magikarp determined? This 'size' is measured by the Fishing Guru near Lake of Rage in Gen II. Any knowledge or should I start testing? --Black Eagle 22:59, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you're trying to ask per se, but it's all about luck. There's no way you could check the height of the Magikarp (unless it's within the game code, in which you still can't look at it unless you hack into it.) to my knowledge... ht14 04:08, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Name Origin
I think the name origin for Magikarp's English name is wrong. While Magikarp does have a corrupted spelling of the word 'magic' in it, I am pretty sure the name is actually a combination of 'majestic' and 'carp'. Magikarp's Japanese name is a combination of 'carp' (Koi 鯉) and 'king' which plays on both the irony of Magikarp's usefulness and the Chinese legend that surround Magikarp and Gyarados (recently recapped in this Bulbapedia article). I believe that there is enough evidence to assume that the name Magikarp is a similar play on words. Also, the reasoning in the name origin now doesn't really make sense. Noah★ (talk) 03:15, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, I would like to bust a myth : Magicarpe come from "carp" and the latin "magister" (which give "master") or more generally "magis". His name origin is basically the same than the japanese "king carp". Hido (talk) 21:41, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
