Mail in Generation III contains nine spaces, four rows of two spaces with a fifth row containing one space, in which a message can be entered. Unlike Generation II, the message is restricted to certain words preprogrammed into the game, often preventing a trainer from saying what the trainer truly wants to say. The only words that can be added to the list of words are ones obtained from the Hipster in [[Mauville City]]. This function may have been introduced to prevent players from sending profane messages. However, in Generation IV, with the advent of trading via [[Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection]], the restricted sentence structure and vocabulary allows players speaking different languages to communicate.

Revision as of 10:50, 8 March 2010

Mail, in terms of the Pokémon world, is a held item given to a Pokémon that contains a message written by the trainer. This message can then be given to other trainers by trading Pokémon. The mail system has been tweaked slightly since its introduction in Generation II, becoming more restrictive of what can be said in the message in Generation III.

Generation II

Mail in Generation II contains 32 spaces, 16 spaces across two rows, in which a message can be entered. Unlike in future versions, the message is not restricted to certain words, allowing trainers to place any message that they desire in the mail.

Generation III

Mail in Generation III contains nine spaces, four rows of two spaces with a fifth row containing one space, in which a message can be entered. Unlike Generation II, the message is restricted to certain words preprogrammed into the game, often preventing a trainer from saying what the trainer truly wants to say. The only words that can be added to the list of words are ones obtained from the Hipster in Mauville City. This function may have been introduced to prevent players from sending profane messages. However, in Generation IV, with the advent of trading via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the restricted sentence structure and vocabulary allows players speaking different languages to communicate.

Like Generation III, the message is restricted to certain words preprogrammed into the game, often preventing a trainer from saying what the trainer truly wants to say, although with Wi-Fi trading allowing trades around the world, this ensures that the letter remains readable in any language.
