Wurmple (Japanese: ケムッソ Kemusso) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

Wurmple will evolve into either Silcoon or Cascoon starting at level 7 depending on its personality value. As personality values cannot be influenced by the player, what a given Wurmple will evolve into is essentially random. From there, the Silcoon or Cascoon will evolve again starting at level 10 into Beautifly or Dustox respectively.

Biology

Physiology

Wurmple's body is colored red at the top and a cream color on the belly. Its eyes are large and yellow with dark pupils. Wurmple has a sharp yellow stinger on its head and two, also yellow in coloration, on its rear. Behind its forehead spike is a tall, erect, red spine with a similar, if smaller spine behind that. Wurmple has small spikes running down the top portions of its body and five pairs of stubby white limbs.

Special abilities

Wurmple’s feet are tipped with suction pads, allowing it to cling to glass or tree branches without slipping. Wurmple can also spit a white silk that turns sticky when it comes in contact with air. Wurmple can also release poison from the spikes on its rear end.

Behavior

Bird Pokémon such as Swellow and Starly target Wurmple for prey, and Wurmple desperately resists by pointing the venomous spikes on its rear and leaking poison at the foe, weakening it.

Habitat

Wurmple lives amidst tall grass and in forests.

In the various Pokédex entries on Wurmple, it is described as eating leaves or pulling the bark off trees to feed on the sap. This makes them easy to attract with Honey.

May's Wurmple

May captured a Wurmple in All in a Day's Wurmple. May's Wurmple evolved into Silcoon in A Corphish Out of Water, and later evolved into Beautifly in Seeing is Believing!.

Jessie's Wurmple

Jessie also captured a Wurmple in All in a Day's Wurmple. Jessie's Wurmple evolved into a Cascoon in the same episode that May's Wurmple evolved in, and later evolved into Dustox, which was also the same episode where May's Silcoon had evolved into a Beautifly.

Minor appearances

One was shown in A Trainer and Child Reunion! as a Pokémon that was released by Aaron when he was younger. It came back years later as a Beautifly.

A Wurmple appeared in The Ribbon Cup Caper at the ship’s Pokémon Center.

A running joke is that Wurmple is terrified that Swellow is going to eat him, and that's why he named their team that. Only at the end of the game does Swellow realize that Wurmple is afraid of him.

Generation III Ruby Using the spikes on its rear end, Wurmple peels the bark off trees and feeds on the sap that oozes out. This Pokémon's feet are tipped with suction pads that allow it to cling to glass without slipping. Sapphire Wurmple is targeted by Swellow as prey. Trivia

• Wurmple shares the same species name with Caterpie. They are both known as the Worm Pokémon.
• All four different species names belonging to Wurmple's evolutionary family are shared with a Generation I Pokémon.
• Wurmple is the only Pokémon whose branched evolutions evolve further. All other Pokémon with a branch in their evolutionary line either evolve once before the branch or do not have any other evolutionary event besides the one which is branched.
• Along with Clamperl and Burmy, it is one of the only Pokémon whose multiple evolutionary paths are all Pokémon of the same generation as it is.
• Wurmple, along with Caterpie and Weedle, evolves at level 7, the lowest set level in the games (though Pokémon that evolve by level up with another method can evolve as low as level 1, where no leveling up is required, or level 2, where at least one level up is required).
• Wurmple is the only Pokémon whose evolution is directly influened by its Personality Value. However, some Pokémon evolve based on gender, whih is aused by Personality Value.

Origin

Wurmple is based on a caterpillar. It also appears to resemble an earwig somewhat.

Name origin

Wurmple's name is a combination of worm and rumple, referring to the wrinkled texture of its skin.

Kemusso is derived from 毛虫 kemushi, caterpillar.
