Lickitung (Japanese: ベロリンガ Beroringa) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Lickilicky via level-up while knowing Rollout, which it learns at level 33.

Biology

Physiology

Lickitung has soft, pink skin with semicircular yellow markings on its belly, fully circular markings on its knees, and a thick, powerful tail. It has small, beady eyes, and its hands have thumb-claws and circular yellow markings on the underside. The most famous feature Lickitung possesses is a long prehensile tongue, which it uses to manipulate objects and possibly to consume them, aside from being very receptive to all sorts of tastes, it is also very dexterous. The tongue is very likely connected to its huge tail, as when it is extended, the tail quivers.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Licks from its 6'6"-long tongue can paralyze foes. Its saliva is gooey and sticks to everything.

Behavior

These Pokémon appear to be, like Slowpoke, rather easygoing and almost dopey, hence having Own Tempo and Oblivious as abilities. They also like to lick things they come across, but get put-off by some sour substances. They do not mean harm when they lick people for food traces. Lickitung also uses its tongue to lick its body clean.

Habitat

Lickitung are a rare sight, usually staying in dense forests near large bodies of water. They are rare in Kanto, but seem to be far more common in Johto and Sinnoh.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Lickitung uses its tongue to catch prey, and thus seems to be a carnivore.

In the anime

Major appearances

Jessie's Lickitung

Lickitung was first seen in Princess Versus Princess. Jessie captured it and used in the Princess Festival Tournament against Misty. After defeating Ash's Pikachu and Bulbasaur and Brock's Vulpix, it lost to Misty's Psyduck. Jessie accidentally traded her Lickitung for Benny's Wobbuffet in Tricks Of The Trade.

Other

Minor appearances

A Lickitung appeared in a flashback in If the Scarf Fits, Wear It! before evolving into Lickilicky.

Pokédex entries

Episode Pokémon Source Entry
EP052 Lickitung Ash's Pokédex Lickitung, the Licking Pokémon. It uses a tongue that is more than twice the length of its body to battle, as well as to gather food.

In the manga

In Pokémon Adventures, Lickitung is one of the Pokémon seen in Gold's house.

Later, in Volume 12, a quad of Lickitung becomes attracted by the scent of Crystal's newly evolved Bayleef.

Later on Diamond's map was stolen by a Lickitung and Diamond attempts to capture one.

In the TCG

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Lickitung is a Pokéfloat. As fighting moves to the left, Lickitung will extend its tongue which must be used as a stepping stone to continue.

Trivia

  • Lickitung was originally to be called Tonguetyd but this changed before the release of the English versions of Pokémon Red and Blue.
  • Even though it was repeatedly stated to attack using licks, it was not able to learn Lick until Generation II.
  • Prior to Generation IV, Lickitung can learn Rollout by TM04 during Generation II, or when purified in Pokémon XD or tutored the move in Pokémon Emerald. In Generation IV, Lickitung needs to know the move Rollout to evolve into Lickilicky. This makes Lickitung and Piloswine the only Pokémon which meet their Generation IV evolution criteria in games of prior generations.
  • Its Red/Blue and LeafGreen Pokédex data compares Lickitung's extensible tongue to that of a chameleon, a real-world lizard. Charmeleon is also based on a chameleon, but does not have a notably long tongue.
  • Lickitung was incorrectly referred to as a Template:Type2 Pokémon in the Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Prima game guide.
  • Lickitung has lost the markings over its eyes in the transition from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire to Pokémon Emerald.
  • Lickitung is one of the three Generation I Pokémon whose tongue is always sticking out in 2D and 3D games while idle. It shares this trait with Shellder and Seel.
    • Coincidentally, Lickitung is the only one of the three able to learn Lick in any generation.
      • Furthermore, it is the only Pokémon whose evolution also revolves around its tongue. Even more surprisingly, Lickitung is the only Pokémon of the three to have an evolution after Generation I.

Origin

It may have been based on any number of lizards with extending tongues, particularly the blue-tongued skink. It also shares traits with anteaters. Lickitung could also be an Iguanodon with some similar characteristics, including a long tongue.

Name origin

Lickitung's name is a combination and corruption of lick and tongue. The bero in Beroringa may be derived from べろ bero, tongue, ベロベロ, berobero, an onomatopoeia for a licking sound, or べろべろ嘗める beroberonameru, to lick up with one's tongue. Ringer is most likely derived from English ring, referring to the patterns on its body. It is also possible that ringa is a corruption of the English word lingua, which refers to a tongue or an organ resembling a tongue [1].

In other languages

  • German: Schlurp - From slurp.
  • French: Excelangue - From excellent and langue (tongue). The name as a whole sounds like excellent.
  • Korean: 내루미 Naerumi
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 大舌頭 Dà Shé Tóu - Literally means "Big tongue".
