Flygon is based on the winged, adult stage of the {{wp|antlion}}, which highly resembles a dragonfly. Often the adult antlion and dragonfly are confused with one another, and Flygon could draw inspiration from both. In fact, some species of dragonflies are commonly called "sand dragons", which could account for Vibrava and Flygon's interesting typing.

Flygon (Japanese: フライゴン Frygon) is a dual-type Ground/Dragon Pokémon.

It evolves from Vibrava starting at level 45. It is the final form of Trapinch.

Biology

Physiology

Flygon is a large, light green, insect-like dragon Pokémon. Flygon's tail has several dark green stripes and three green rhombus shapes at the end. Flygon has a pair of green rhombus-shaped wings, toeless hind legs and three-clawed hands. Flygon has red-lensed "goggles" covering its eyes and a pair of green antennae.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Aside from being able to kick up sandstorms, Flygon's other ability is Levitate, which allows it to avoid Ground attacks such as Earthquake or Magnitude. Its wings also seem to be "singing" when they are flapped, because Flygon's type is Dragon, it gains access to Template:Type2 moves just like its Pre-evolution, Vibrava.

Also like Vibrava, Flygon also gains access to the most powerful Dragon-type move, Draco Meteor.

Behavior

This dragon Pokémon is highly adapted to life in the desert. It's also known as "the spirit of the desert" due to the sound its wings make in sandstorms. When it flaps its wings, it inadvertently kicks up a cloud of dust, which serves to protect it from potential enemies. Its eyes are covered with thick lenses, which prevent particles of sand from disturbing its vision. The flapping wings create a very unusual "singing" sound. Because this sound is usually heard in the presence of sandstorms, it was thought that this Pokémon was the spirit of the desert.

Habitat

Although Flygon are hard to find in the wild, they are often seen in deserts punished by harsh sandstorms, often caused by themselves. Most Flygon belong to trainers, mainly from evolved Vibrava, either caught in the wild or previously evolved from a Trapinch.

Ruby Flygon is nicknamed "the elemental spirit of the desert." Because its flapping wings whip up a cloud of sand, this Pokémon is always enveloped in a sandstorm while flying.
Sapphire Flygon whips up a sandstorm by flapping its wings. The wings create a series of notes that sound like singing. Because the "singing" is the only thing that can be heard in a sandstorm, this Pokémon is said to be the desert spirit.
Emerald The flapping of its wings sounds like singing. To prevent detection by enemies, it hides itself by flapping up a cloud of desert sand.
FireRed It hides itself by kicking up desert sand with its wings. Red covers shield its eyes from sand.

Trivia

  • Flygon and its pre-evolution are the only non-legendary Pokémon that are not Template:Type2 and can learn Fly, with the exception of Smeargle.
  • Flygon and Vibrava are also the only Pokémon that can learn Fly that can also know Dig without aid of a TM (other than Smeargle).
  • As of Platinum, Flygon and Vibrava are also the only non-legendary Pokémon that are not Template:Type2 nor Template:Type2 and can learn Heat Wave, with the exception of Smeargle.
  • Flygon shares the same species name with Xatu. They are both known as Mystic Pokémon.
  • Flygon is commonly mistaken as a psuedo-legendary Pokémon, due to the fact that it is seen as incredibly strong in the anime, is the final stage in a 3 part evolutionary line and is a Dragon-type, considered by many to be the best type in the games. This is not the case because it does not have base stat total of 600.
  • Flygon has the same base attack as it's pre-evolution, Trapinch.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

Flygon is based on the winged, adult stage of the antlion, which highly resembles a dragonfly. Often the adult antlion and dragonfly are confused with one another, and Flygon could draw inspiration from both. In fact, some species of dragonflies are commonly called "sand dragons", which could account for Vibrava and Flygon's interesting typing.

Name origin

Flygon's name is a portmanteau of fly and dragon or a rearrangement of dragonfly.

In other languages

  • German: Libelldra - A combination of Libelle (dragonfly) and Drache (dragon).
  • French: Libegon - From libellule (dragonfly) and dragon.
  • Korean: 플라이곤 Flygon
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 沙漠蜻蜓 Shā Mò Qīng Tíng - Literally "Desert dragonfly".
