Trivia
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Volcarona and its pre-evolution.
- Volcarona has the highest Special Attack of all Bug-type Pokémon, and the highest base stat total of all non-legendary Bug-type Pokémon.
- Volcarona and Genesect are the only two Bug-type Pokémon to learn Fly, but neither are Flying-type.
- Volcarona is the last Pokémon in the National Pokédex that evolves from another Pokémon.
- Volcarona takes the longest to go through a single stage of evolution of all Pokémon, evolving at level 59.
- It shares the species name "Sun Pokémon" with Espeon and Sunflora.
- It learns a new move by level up each tenth level, the only exception being level 59.
- Volcarona is the last non-legendary Pokémon in the National Pokédex order.
- Volcarona is the only Pokémon with a catch rate of 15.
- Volcarona is the only Pokémon that has a base stat total of 550.
- For reasons unknown, Larvesta and Volcarona cannot learn Attract, despite having genders and being compatible with other TMs. They share this trait with Nincada, although Nincada's inability to learn the move is likely due to a desire to keep the genderless Shedinja from learning it.
Origin
Volcarona is based on a moth, particularly the Atlas moth. Conceptwise, it may be based on a solar deity, a type of god said to be able to control various aspects of the sun such as sunrise, sunset, eclipses, position, etc. Its wings may be based on the petals of a tiger lily, having the same number of extensions, black spots, and red-orange coloring. The head and antennae of Volcarona bear a resemblance to the headpiece of Hathor, which depicts the horns of the goddess cradling a disk representing the sun in between. Volcarona's appearance may also be loosely based on that of a seraph, a type of angel that is often associated with fire, as its name literally translates to "burning one". Like Volcarona, seraphim are often depicted with six red wings and no legs.
Name origin
Volcarona comes from volcano and corona both referencing its Fire type and its status as the Sun Pokémon. It could also derive from Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. Ulgamoth comes from ウルカヌス Urukanusu, Vulcan, 蛾 ga, a Japanese word meaning moth and English word moth.
