Heracross (Japanese: ヘラクロス Heracros) is a dual-type Bug/Fighting Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Heracross are large beetle-like Pokémon covered in a blue exoskeleton. The most notable feature is the large, pronged horn protruding out of its forehead. Heracross has two antennae with spherical tips to the sides of the horn, and elliptical eyes with yellow scleras. Heracross has small spiky extensions on the forearm segments of its exoskeleton, and two claws on its hands. Heracross has a single spiky extension on each thigh, and one pointed toe on its feet. The lines on its exoskeleton make it look like it is smiling.
Gender differences
A female Heracross's horn has a heart-like shape at the end, whereas the male's end in an 'X' shape.
Special abilities
Heracross is surprisingly strong for its size, and is able to knock down massive trees with its mighty horn. Heracross can use said horn to lift other Pokémon, and its shell is said to be as tough as steel. Heracross is also able to fly, and is even depicted in the anime to be strong enough in its flying to transport its Trainer over limited distances.
Behavior
Heracross live in groups in deep forests. They bite through the bark of trees with their strong jaws to get to the sweet sap inside. This suggests a relation to fellow Bug-type Pinsir, who share many of the same habits. Heracross's eating habits unwittingly enter them into a symbiotic relationship with Butterfree, who also love tree sap, but lack the strength to get to it. Despite their size, great strength, and powerful horns, Heracross are really docile creatures who prefer peace over resorting to violence.
Habitat
Heracross prefer to live in deep forests, such as those in Johto, Sinnoh & the Sevii Islands, where there are many trees for them to suck sap from.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
Heracross's preferred diet is mainly made up of sap and other plant juices. This makes them unpopular among Grass-type Pokémon like Bulbasaur, as Heracross often try to suck nourishment from them. This also makes them easy to attract with Honey.
In the anime
Major appearances
Heracross first appeared in A Sappy Ending. Groups of Pinsir and Heracross were having a dispute due to the fact that Team Rocket was siphoning all the tree sap from the Pinsir side of the forest. One Heracross decided to help Ash and his friends for this crisis. Ash captured Heracross at the end of the episode.

A Heracross appeared in Smells Like Team Spirit! under the ownership of Dawn's tag battle partner, Conway.
A Heracross appeared in Steeling Peace of Mind! under the ownership of Barry.

In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Heracross is first seen in Volume 7. While Silver is communicating with Green following the conclusion of the Yellow arc, he stands in a full shot of Sprout Tower with a bunch of Johto Pokémon in the background, Heracross being one of them.
Two Heracross are later seen as two of the Pokémon under Bugsy's control, which he later uses one of them to battle Sabrina in the opening ceremonies of the Pokémon League. It initially overwhelmed her Mr. Mime due to its type advantage, but lost when it was tricked into using Endure just in time for her to use Encore. After gleefully expounding that this left it powerless, she finished it off with a Psybeam attack.
Another Heracross was seen in Greta's arsenal, which was first sent out in her battle against Emerald. It was able to fight evenly against his Sceptile and outscored it.
In the W Mission Story: Pokémon Ranger - the Comic manga
Heracross is one of the Pokémon that Lunick asked for help in the short manga based on the game.

Trivia
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Heracross.
- Heracross is one of fourteen Pokémon that one could collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
- Heracross is the only non-Flying type that learns Aerial Ace by leveling up.
- Heracross is able to learn Bulk Up via TM08 in every generations since its debut, except only in Pokémon Black and White.
- Despite being depicted as capable of flight, Heracross is not part Flying-type, nor can it have the Ability Levitate. It shares this trait with Beedrill, Venomoth, Dustox, Volbeat, Illumise and Volcarona. Unlike the others, however, Heracross' sprites are not in flight.
- It is also incapable of learning Fly, despite being seen possessing the ability to easily carry a human being in flight, in the anime.
- Heracross can be seen as a counterpart to Pinsir. Both are Bug-type Pokémon based on beetles who lack an evolutionary family. Unlike Pinsir, Heracross is part Fighting-type, however, Pinsir does learn several Fighting-type moves by leveling up. They both are also version exclusives in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.
- Heracross's FireRed and LeafGreen Sugimori artwork has the exact same pose as its original Generation II artwork. It shares this trait with Nidorina and Furret, whose artwork was in the same pose in both their original Generation I and II and Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver art respectively.
Origin
Heracross is most likely based on the kabutomushi, a very popular species of rhinoceros beetle found in Japan and other parts of Asia. These beetles are known for their incredible strength, and use in insect fighting, which explains its Fighting type.
Name origin
Heracross and Heracros are a combination of Ἡρακλῆς, Hēraklēs (Heracles, a demigod of Greek mythology, whose Roman mythological analogue has given name to the Hercules beetle) and cross.
