A Shivering Shovel Search! (Japanese: スコップに要注意!!! Beware of Shovels!!!) is the 22nd episode of the Sun & Moon series, and the 961st episode of the Pokémon anime. It first aired in Japan on April 13, 2017 and in the United States on July 8, 2017.
Blurb
Ash and Kiawe are training with Litten on the beach as Pikachu and Rockruff play with a mysterious shovel that seems to be moving around on its own—until it rises out of the sand to reveal a dangerous Sandygast! When Rockruff attacks it, the shovel is launched into the sea, and the furious Sandygast evolves into Palossand and traps Ash and Litten inside!
Everyone works together to stop the rampaging Palossand—with a star performance from Snowy—as Popplio and Pikachu venture into the sea to find the shovel. After its shovel is returned, Palossand expresses its thanks by enveloping Professor Kukui’s house in a big hug!

Down on the beach, Ash is helping Litten to master Fire Fang with Kiawe and Turtonator. Litten launches its attack but comes up short and ends up biting Turtonator's tail and nothing more before getting swotted away. Litten is down but Ash is supportive and Kiawe promises to help teach it. Later, Pikachu and Rockruff are playing when Pikachu spots something in the sand and investigates but it keeps moving away from Pikachu and Rockruff. Turtonator demonstrates absorbing air to help increase the power of the fire inside its body so Ash has Litten try that which it does before going to attack with Fire Fang only to trip on a can. As Ash compliments Litten on trying, Pikachu and Rockruff get his attention. They notice a shovel in the sand and Kiawe recognizes it as being a Sandygast and Rotom provides Ash with information, Kiawe warns they have to be careful of it as it is the most dangerous Pokémon found on the beach and his grandfather was telling him to be careful of any shovel that appeared stuck in the sand that something bad can happen if you touch it and remembers a time when he was young that he told his friends that it wasn't scary only to touch the shovel and he became possessed. Kiawe doesn't remember what happened but was told that he was gathering up sand until the next morning. Ash laughs this off saying that it is just sand just as Sandygast turns towards Rockruff and Pikachu about to attack. Ash tells Rockruff to use Rock Throw which Rockruff does but the attack ends up knocking Sandygast's shovel off its body, sending it flying into the sea which ends up making it even angrier.
Sandygast fires off multiple Shadow Ball's at Ash, Kiawe and their Pokémon which they dodge as Sandygast searches for its shovel as Ash notes that Sandygast looks really mad which Kiawe says is down to losing its shovel and Ash knows it was knocked into the sea. Kiawe is about to go and search for it when Rotom stops him as the shovel could be replaced with something else and Ash looks around for something to use knowing it is the shovel that Sandygast wants, Ash looks at Rotom and has an idea. Ash grabs Rotom and starts walking towards Sandygast and Kiawe asks him if he is serious as Ash tells Rotom to be a shovel for a bit, much to Rotom's horror as Ash tells him to relax and places Rotom on Sandygast's head which Rotom finds embarrassing. This only makes Sandygast more furious and causes Sandygast to evolve into Palossand. The sand around Palossand starts to winkle as Palossand's body increases in size as Kiawe orders everyone to get back but Ash stays near Palossand, concerned for Rotom who is still on Palossand's head. Ash tells Rotom to get away but Rotom isn't able to as he is stuck. Palossand collapses on top of Ash as Pikachu watches in horror before lifting its body from the sand, with Ash now trapped inside. Rowlet flies up to Ash but Palossand swats it away as Ash wonders if Palossand is a Pokémon and Rotom tells him that Palossand is the evolved form of Sandygast and provides Ash with data and makes Ash realize he is inside Palossand's body.
Pikachu launches a Thunderbolt on Palossand but Ash stops him as he would get shocked as well. Ash tries to climb Palossand's wall but the sand stops him from reaching the top but he soon makes it. He reaches the window and tells Kiawe they need to find that shovel and fast before slipping back down. Kiawe realizes this as Lana and Mallow arrive and spot Palossand on the beach with Lillie and Sophocles arriving soon after. Rockruff goes to attack Palossand but Rotom says it is dangerous as Palossand goes to eat Rockruff, Litten kicks Rockruff out of the way, resulting in Litten getting eaten instead. Ash can only watch in horror as Litten ends up inside Palossand's body along with him. Ash drops down to the floor to pick Litten up and asks Litten if it is OK only for Litten to start glowing green as Rotom starts to glow green as well. Lana, Mallow, Lillie and Sophocles join Kiawe who fills them in on what has happened and they all become worried about Ash. They call out to Ash who explains that Litten is glowing green and Kiawe mentions the same is happening to Rotom. Mallow asks what's wrong but Sophocles doesn't have a clue but Lillie guesses from her reading that Palossand is most likely absorbing much of Rotom and Litten's energy as it can so it can maintain its giant size as Ash tries to throw Litten out but a force sends Litten back in. Kiawe realizes neither of them can escape and Lana orders Popplio to melt the sand with Bubble Beam only for Palossand's ability Water Compaction to activate, healing the damage and making it tougher.
Mallow realizes things are serious as Palossand starts whipping up the sand as Ash yells at them to get away quick which they do as Kiawe tells them that Palossand is looking for the shovel that should be on its head but it got knocked into the ocean. Sophocles knows that they can't search the whole ocean but Lana realizes that they can use Popplio but when Kiawe mentions touching what would happen if Popplio touches the shovel, Lana says that Popplio can make a balloon and Kiawe realizes that Popplio can wrap the shovel in a balloon. Pikachu is keen to help so Popplio makes a balloon for Pikachu to allow it to go underwater as well and they head into the ocean with Kiawe wishing them luck. After wishing Pikachu luck, Ash tells Litten that it needs to hold on as the others come up with an idea to use Snowy as Ice-type moves should be effective and Lillie puts Snowy down on the sand as they can use Powder Snow to freeze Palossand whilst Kiawe and the others agree to attract Palossand's attention so Snowy can use Powder Snow without Palossand noticing. Lillie is worried about it would mean Litten, Ash and Rotom getting hit as well but Ash calls out to her telling her not to worry about them as he'll be find and Rotom confirms the same as Rotom finds this similar to a plot of Alolan Detective Laki where Laki was on a stakeout in snowy conditions where the suspect would appear at a mountain cottage which makes Rotom say if Laki can go through it, so can Rotom which makes Mallow think that Rotom is enjoying it. Kiawe has Turtonator and Charizard get ready and Mallow and Sophocles get ready to back up Snowy with Steenee and Togedemaru.
Popplio and Pikachu are searching underwater for the shovel when Pikachu spots something only for it to be the tongue of a Shellder. Back on shore, Kiawe watches as the others go round the back of Palossand and instructs Turtonator, Charizard, Rowlet and Rockruff to attack so they can keep Palossand occupied with Turtonator and Charizard both using Flamethrower whilst Rockruff uses Rock Throw and Rowlet uses Leafage. They keep up the attacks which keep Palossand occupied that it doesn't notice the others behind it as Kiawe calls out to Lillie to have Snowy use Powder Snow which she does but Powder Snow isn't doing much. Inside Palossand, Ash watches the attacks hit and assures Litten that they'll get out soon and Litten will feel better. Outside Palossand fires a Shadow Ball at Charizard which Turtonator blocked with Flamethrower. Sophocles realizes that Palossand is too much for Snowy as Mallow gets a large leaf and starts fanning it which helps to increase the Powder Snow as Mallow tells Lana and Sophocles to do the same and they go get a large leaf each. Their efforts combined with help from Steenee help Powder Snow start to freeze Palossand as Togedemaru starts spinning its tail to help. Snowy soon becomes tired but with encouragement from Lillie soon keeps up the attack as Palossand becomes frozen with the ice spreading inside. Litten starts to feel the cold but Ash wraps Litten up in his T-Shirt to keep Litten warm and Litten starts to glow red which helps to warm Ash up.
Underwater, Pikachu spots the shovel but as Popplio forms a balloon to put the shovel in, a Magikarp ends up swimming into the balloon, much to the horror of Pikachu and Popplio. On the shore, their work is starting to slow Palossand down and they keep up their work and soon Palossand is frozen solid. Snowy collapses from all the effort it put in as Lillie thanks Snowy for its hard word as Kiawe thanks Turtonator and Charizard as well as Rowlet and Rockruff high five each other. Lana is pleased but looks to the ocean and wonders what is keeping Pikachu and Popplio so long. Underwater, their efforts have been interrupted by more Pokémon who have ended up in Popplio's balloons but the latest attempt is foiled when a Corsola manages to pop the balloon. On the shore, Rowlet fires a leafage at the ice near a window which gets Ash's attention and Ash starts to run up the frozen sand and manages to reach the window. Ash headbutts the ice to try and break through but ends up hurting himself and falls back down, vowing not to give up as Litten fires up its body and attacks the ice with Fire Fang to break through to the outside. Ash congratulates Litten on mastering Fire Fang and climbs up to the window and waves to his friends. Kiawe has Charizard fly up to give Ash and Litten a lift and Ash tells Charizard to go and get Rotom as well. Mallow yells at Ash to be careful as Ash and Litten jump from Charizard to on top of Palossand's head and Ash tells Litten to use Ember to melt the ice that Rotom is stuck in which Litten does just as Palossand starts to break free of the ice.
Kiawe wonders where the shovel is as Sophocles asks Lillie if they can use Powder Snow again but Snowy is too exhausted as Lana looks to the ocean, the shovel now in a balloon pops out of the water as Pikachu and Popplio emerge. Ash struggles to free Rotom as Popplio brings the balloon with the shovel on its nose to the shore and bounces it to Pikachu who hits it with his tail towards Rockruff who using its tail bounces the balloon to Steenee and with help from Togedemaru and Rowlet, the balloon is now over Palossand's head and Ash tells Litten to time it and then hit the balloon with Ember which Litten does causing the shovel to fall towards Palossand's head. Ash frees Rotom just in time as the shovel lands on Palossand's head. Ash, Rotom and Litten end up falling off of Palossand but are caught by Charizard. Palossand is happy to have its shovel back and goes down under the sand. Ash apologizes to Rotom for his actions as Rotom is left still feeling cold and they know to be more careful of shovels in the sand in future. Back at Professor Kukui's house, Professor Kukui says that he had a busy day as Ash changes his shirt and tells Professor Kukui that Litten has master Fire Fang as it goes dark outside. Professor Kukui goes outside, wondering why it has gotten dark only to find Palossand who gives the house a hug.

Trivia
- Poké Problem: Which Pokémon evolves in today's episode?
- An announcer and DJ Leo narrate the preview for the next episode.
- When Sandygast evolved, the style of evolution animation from the Best Wishes and XY series is reused, as opposed to the style introduced in A Seasoned Search!.
Errors
- Rockruff's paw is shown to be the same shade of brown as the rest of its leg whilst bracing from the sand.
- When Litten charges at Turtonator with Fire Fang, it trips over a soda can that suddenly appeared on the ground and disappears afterwards.
- When Ash fell after trying to escape the frozen Palossand, he had his hand on a big bump on his forehead. When Litten was shown charging to use Fire Fang, Ash's arm was down by his side. When the camera went back to Ash, his hand was back on his head and his cap was facing forward.
- When Sandygast's shovel was placed on Palossand's head, it inexplicably grows large after Palossand flips it upside-down.
Dub edits
- Because the dub ends without the Poké Problem, Palossand swallowing Kukui's house is not resolved
