Team Star (Japanese: スター Star-dan, literally Star Gang) is the villainous team living in the Paldea region. They are delinquent students of Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV, and their uniforms vary by game.[1]

In the games

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Team Star is the focus of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's ★ Starfall Street ★ (Japanese: スターダスト★ストリート Stardust ★ Street) storyline, causing trouble for others and pressuring other students into joining. The team is made of five squads, each led by a Boss. The Schedar Squad is Team Star's Fire crew, led by Mela.[1]

When battling a Boss, they will appear on top of a custom car called the Starmobile[1] (Japanese: スターモービル Starmobile), which has a specially modified Revavroom attached to it with the Boss's type and a different ability from regular Revavroom. After defeating a Boss, they will reward the player with a Badge.[2]

They are said to have had a reputation for bullying and abusing other students, and consequently Clavell had given an order for them to disband or be expelled from the Academy. However, as the player character confronts and defeats the bosses, it is revealed that they had in fact been victims of bullying; after they had confronted their tormentors a year and a half before the events of the game, a scandal broke out that led the bullies to drop out. In the aftermath of the incident, the team's founder Cassiopeia insisted on taking sole responsibility for it in exchange for the exoneration of her friends. While the director Harrington agreed to her request, the deputy director erased the records of the incident in an attempt to shield himself from blame. Not long afterwards, the deputy director was fired, and Harrington and the rest of the Academy's faculty resigned in recognition of their failure to handle the bullying.

Cassiopeia had suggested that Team Star disband in the aftermath of the incident and left to study abroad in Galar for a year and a half, but her fellow bosses were unwilling to give up their friendship with her and held out hope that if they kept the team going, they might be able to hear from her again.

Upon meeting the player character and seeing them defeat two Team Star grunts, Penny (the true identity of Cassiopeia) gets the idea to have them challenge the squad bosses and claim their badges; as their code dictates that the bosses cannot turn down a challenge and must give up their positions if defeated, she believed that this would ensure that they would not be expelled because of her.

After the bosses are defeated, Penny challenges the player to a battle so she can announce Team Star's disbanding without any regrets. Following this, Clavell (who had been assisting the player character disguised as a student called "Clive" and had come to learn that the rumors about their activities were false) rescinds his order for the team to disband, choosing to address the team's rulebreaking by allowing their bases to be repurposed as training centers for other students to learn Team Star's distinctive tactics.

Trivia

  • All of the five squads are named after five of the brightest stars in the constellation Cassiopeia.
  • The battle theme for Team Star's Squad Bosses is the longest battle theme in the franchise. The first point where the theme repeats is at 2:58, surpassing Ghetsis's battle theme in Pokémon Black and White Versions and its remaster in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon; however, similar to the Academy Ace Tournament battle theme and the Galar Battle Tower battle theme, the repeated music contains a variation in the form of a different guitar solo, resulting in a complete length of 5:48 before the true loop point.
  • The battle theme for Team Star's grunts also plays when battling Pokémon Trainer Youssef outside the Navi Squad's Base's entrance and Pokémon Trainer Harrington outside the Ruchbah Squad's Base's entrance, despite both of them not being members of Team Star, they are battled in place of the respective grunts guarding the entrances since both of them chose to battle the player for their own reasons.

    • Harrington, Ortega's piano tutor, was informed by the entrance grunt that the player was planning to raid the Ruchbah Squad's Base, lead by Ortega, and indulges them in a battle before letting the player challenge the Ruchbah Squad.
  • One of the grunts from the Caph Squad is named Carmen, thus making Team Star one of the very few villainous teams in the franchise to have grunts with confirmed names. Additionally, Carmen uses Team Star as her Trainer class, instead of Team Star Grunt.
