Hassel (Japanese: ハッサク Hassaku) is a member of the Elite Four of the Paldea region and the art teacher at Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV. He specializes in Dragon-type Pokémon.

In the core series games

Hassel is a descendant of a long line of Dragon-type Trainers in an unnamed faraway region. He ran away from home as a youth to pursue a dream of "making music", before becoming a member of the Elite Four in the Paldea region as well as an art instructor at the academy. Hassel is shown to be friendly, but very emotional, as he bursts into tears of joy when defeated by the player. He is an old friend of Gym Leader Brassius of Artazon.

During his bond story, a Dragon Tamer arrives at the academy to get Hassel back home, claiming his father, the head of the family, is feeling ill, and Hassel should be taking his place as the head of the family. Through interactions with the player, Hassel gains the confidence to confront the Dragon Tamer, realizing her words about his father's deteriorating health were lies in another attempt to get him to come home and swearing to stay at the academy to teach.

In The Indigo Disk, Hassel can be invited to Blueberry Academy as a special coach. A conversation between him and Drayton reveals that Hassel knows his grandfather, Drayden.

In the TCG

Ultra rare print of Hassel
Main article: Hassel (Twilight Masquerade 151)

Hassel was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released in the Japanese Transformation Mask expansion and the English Twilight Masquerade expansion, with artwork by GOSSAN. An ultra rare version with artwork by the same illustrator was released in the same sets. This card can only be used if any of the player's Pokémon were Knocked Out during their opponent's last turn. It lets the player look at the top 8 cards of their deck and choose up to 3 of them to put into their hand. The other cards are then shuffled back into the deck.

Trivia

  • The back vent on Hassel's coat could be in reference to the capes worn by Dragon Tamers, whom Hassel has a history with, being a Dragon-type Trainer himself.
    • It might also be a nod to Clair and her design in Generation II due to how her cape resembles part of a suit.
  • Prior to the release of The Indigo Disk, Hassel was the only Paldean Elite Four member that could be rebattled indefinitely.
  • Hassel is left-handed, as shown when he throws his Poké Balls and in his official concept art painting a portrait of an Applin.
  • Hassel has a Flapple, a Grass-type, which is the same type Brassius specializes in. In Sword and Shield, there is a cutscene that implies giving someone an Applin is a romantic gesture, which may suggest Hassel's Flapple was a gift from Brassius and that the two are likely in a romantic relationship.[1]
