Goldenrod City
32 is a lengthy road that runs south along the shore from Violet City to Union Cave. A path on the north end leads west to the mysterious Ruins of Alph.

Welcome to Goldenrod, the largest metropolis in Johto and sister city to Saffron in Kanto. This sprawling city boasts several major attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store. There is so much to do in the big city that it is easy to forget about a single shady character. But with a Rocket Grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to save the city sooner or later. But first thing's first, let's see the sights!

Goldenrod Department Store
Ruins of Alph
Located just east of the Pokémon Center, the Goldenrod Department Store is the largest shop in Johto. The behemoth building consists of eight floors, including the rooftop and basement, and has a wide array of items up for sale.
The grounds where the Ruins of Alph are located can be reached from 32 to the east and 36 to the north. There are four interior chambers. Each chamber holds a puzzle in which tiles must be arranged to show the image of a specific Pokémon species. Completing each puzzle causes a series of Unown forms to begin appearing in the large hall beneath the complex. The mysterious Pokémon species appears in List of Pokémon with form differences that all resemble letters of the alphabet. Unown's encounter rate is evenly divided among all unlocked forms.

Basement
Each chamber also features a message in Unown script on the rear wall. Deciphering this message and using the correct item or field move reveals a doorway to hidden room filled with items.

The TM Corner offers a handful of different TMs for sale. Some of these attacks are very powerful at this part of the game, so consider buying whichever TMs your Pokémon can learn. On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper who gives out 27 if your lead Pokémon is happy, and 21 if it is unhappy.

Also on 5F, there is a man who is hoping to trade his Machop for a Drowzee. Drowzee are common on Routes 34 and 35, and the Machop received in return will have an advantage at the Goldenrod Gym, and holds a Macho Brace which doubles effort value growth.

6F
North chamber
{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #; roundy; border: 5px solid #;"
The north chamber is the only one accessible at first. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: ESCAPE. Using an Escape Rope here reveals a hidden doorway. The room behind holds an Oran Berry, Pecha Berry, Heal Powder, and an EnergyPowder. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a hidden room above the underground hall, where a message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>OUR CLAN ENGRAVED WORDS IN THIS PLACE<br>Our clan engraved words in this place</center>
|- align="center"

! Rooftop
In the entry room, a bit of text beside the puzzle hints at the Pokémon's identity. Move the tiles to their proper place to reveal the Pokémon's image and complete the puzzle. Doing so causes the floor to fall away, dropping you into the underground hall where the first ten forms of Unown have awakened. This draws the attention of a researcher, who notices your talent for archaeology and gives you the Unown Report. This device records the limited data available on each of the Unown forms.

The Rooftop Atrium has vending machines that dispense tasty, cheap, health-restoring drinks. In addition, there is a raffle known as the Daily Drawing Corner that may be entered for pdollar300. First and second prizes change with the day, but third prize is always a random Berry chosen from a group of seven. You can enter as many times as you want each day.

Southeast chamber
The southeast chamber can be accessed after obtaining 03. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: LIGHT. Using the move Flash here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Sitrus Berry, Moon Stone, Heal Powder, and an Energy Root. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a second hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>OUR CLAN CREATED POKEMON STATUE OUTSIDE<br>Our clan created Pokémon statue outside</center>
In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Aerodactyl, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes five more Unown forms to appear in the underground hall.
West chamber
The western chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining 03. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: HO OH. Positioning a Ho-Oh in the first party slot will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Life Orb, Leppa Berry, Revival Herb, and a Charcoal. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a third hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>WE HUMANS NEED TO WALK WITH THEM<br>We humans need to walk with them<br>WE LEAVE HERE FOR THE SAKE OF THEM<br>We leave here for the sake of them</center>

Game Corner
In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Ho-Oh, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes four more Unown forms to appear.
At Goldenrod Game Corner, players can win coins by playing the new Voltorb Flip game. The game features a 5×5 grid of tiles, underneath which are numbers (which multiply the current score) and Voltorb (which Selfdestruct, dropping the score to zero). The total number of points and Voltorb in each set of five cards is noted on the edge of the field. The game advances to more difficult levels once all of the 2× and 3× multipliers have been found. Higher levels give the player a chance to win several hundred coins at a time, which can be redeemed for prizes. Talk to Mr. Game to receive a Coin Case, and start saving up!

The southwest chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining 03 and 04. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: WATER. Attempting to use a Water Stone here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Leppa Berry, Mystic Water, Stardust, and a Star Piece. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to another hidden room above the underground hall, where a final message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>THEY POSSESS POWER TO SENSE WITH MIND AND REJECT OUTSIDE<br>They possess power to sense with mind and reject outside</center>

Bill's House
In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Omanyte, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes the final seven Unown forms to appear.
Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the waterfront with his mother and sister. He is currently away on business in Ecruteak City, but since you are using his storage system, his sister gives out his phone number. Calling Bill is a useful way of checking the number of Pokémon stored in the current Box.

After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards to receive a Eevee from him.
Scheming for SlowpokeTails
As you approach the southern end of the route, you see a shady man loitering around to the west of the Pokémon Center. If spoken to, he tries to sell you a "tasty, nutritious SlowpokeTail" for the special price of pdollar1,000,000. When he realizes that you do not have the cash, he shooes you away.

Fishing Guru 1
Visit the Pokémon Center to rest your weary team and prepare for the upcoming cave. Speak to the Fisherman near the counter to receive an Old Rod. With this fishing rod, you can now cast your line at any body of water to reel in Water Pokémon. The Old Rod is a low-end model, and is often only able to hook Magikarp.

Goldenrod Tunnel
Union Cave is a small cave on the southern end of Johto's peninsula, located between Routes 32 and 33. The ground-level tunnel simply connects the two routes together. Seawater wells up from underground in several areas, initially blocking access to the deepest parts of the cave. Exploring the lower levels at a later point reveals two more exits that lead back to the Ruins of Alph.
The Goldenrod Tunnel runs north-south under the west side of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. The underground hallway houses three shops and a photo booth.

Name Rater
! Available Pokémon
The Name Rater lives in the house to the west of the Goldenrod Gym. Like his counterpart in Lavender Town, he evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and allows the Trainer to think up new nicknames for them.

Mood Tester
The Goldenrod City in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the friendship rating of your lead Pokémon. There are Friendship, like Espeon and Umbreon, that can only be acquired when happy with their Trainer. There are Friendship that can be done to raise a Pokémon's friendship, like Haircut brothers it, feeding it vitamins, or simply walking with it.

Bike Shop
The Bike Shop has moved to the city's southeast neighborhood from Cerulean City in Kanto, but demand has not been very strong. Realizing that you have a lot of traveling to do, the owner offers to loan you a Bicycle in the hopes that the advertising will increase interest, and business will pick up. Riding the bike is faster than traveling on foot, and he gains new customers—everybody's happy!

Magnet Train Station
The Magnet Train Station is located next to the Radio Tower. Currently shut down, this bullet train normally travels between Johto's Goldenrod and Kanto's Saffron twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The other major method of travel between regions—sailing on the S.S. Aqua—runs much less frequently, making the Magnet Train the ideal method of transportation.

Radio Tower
The Radio Tower stands tall directly aside of the train station. Every day, the Pokémon Lottery Corner on 1F draws a lucky number. If this number matches the OT number of any of your Pokémon, then you win a prize! The grand prize is a Master Ball, while other prizes include a Max Revive, Exp. Share, PP Up, and Ultra Ball.

Speak to another woman behind the counter to play a promotional quiz game. Answer all five questions correctly to win a Pokégear for the Pokégear. Once installed, you can tune into the following programs.

Go south to battle Hiker Daniel, then move southeastward to fight Hiker Russell. Turn south to reach Firebreather Bill; defeat him and collect the Great Ball in the corner to the south. Go west to pick up a Potion, then continue southward. Battle Poké Maniac Larry, then turn southeastward to reach an Awakening near the exit.

Whitney's Clefairy does not post much of a challenge, except for Metronome, which can churn out very powerful attacks, to the detriment of the target, but her Miltank is a troublemaker. Ghost Pokémon are typically unaffected by Normal moves, but Miltank's Scrappy ability nullifies this immunity. Its Attract causes Status ailment, which restricts opposite-gender foes to attacking only 50% of the time, and Milk Drink allows it to restore its HP. Stomp is a good STAB move, but which can flinch, and Rollout's low base power may not seem like much, but it gets stronger every turn, so end the match quickly before it starts doing serious damage to your team.

Whitney sobs uncontrollably when she loses, ignoring you altogether. Unable to receive the badge, you turn to leave when Lass Carrie suggests trying again. Whitney finally gives up the Plain, which enables the use of Strength in the field. She also hands over 45 as a prize. In addition, she mentions that something called the Pokéathlon Dome is now open next to the National Park, north of the city.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 32

Route 32
The Ruins of Alph
Ruins of Alph, Interior

Route 32 is a lengthy road that runs south along the shore from Violet City to Union Cave. A path on the north end leads west to the mysterious Ruins of Alph.

Ruins of Alph

The grounds where the Ruins of Alph are located can be reached from Route 32 to the east and Route 36 to the north. There are four interior chambers. Each chamber holds a puzzle in which tiles must be arranged to show the image of a specific Pokémon species. Completing each puzzle causes a series of Unown forms to begin appearing in the large hall beneath the complex. The mysterious Pokémon species appears in many different forms that all resemble letters of the alphabet. Unown's encounter rate is evenly divided among all unlocked forms.

Each chamber also features a message in Unown script on the rear wall. Deciphering this message and using the correct item or field move reveals a doorway to hidden room filled with items.

North chamber

The north chamber is the only one accessible at first. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: ESCAPE. Using an Escape Rope here reveals a hidden doorway. The room behind holds an Oran Berry, Pecha Berry, Heal Powder, and an EnergyPowder. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a hidden room above the underground hall, where a message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

OUR CLAN ENGRAVED WORDS IN THIS PLACE
Our clan engraved words in this place

In the entry room, a bit of text beside the puzzle hints at the Pokémon's identity. Move the tiles to their proper place to reveal the Pokémon's image and complete the puzzle. Doing so causes the floor to fall away, dropping you into the underground hall where the first ten forms of Unown have awakened. This draws the attention of a researcher, who notices your talent for archaeology and gives you the Unown Report. This device records the limited data available on each of the Unown forms.

Southeast chamber

The southeast chamber can be accessed after obtaining HM03 (Surf). Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: LIGHT. Using the move Flash here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Sitrus Berry, Moon Stone, Heal Powder, and an Energy Root. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a second hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

OUR CLAN CREATED POKEMON STATUE OUTSIDE
Our clan created Pokémon statue outside

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Aerodactyl, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes five more Unown forms to appear in the underground hall.

West chamber

The western chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining HM03 (Surf). Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: HO OH. Positioning a Ho-Oh in the first party slot will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Life Orb, Leppa Berry, Revival Herb, and a Charcoal. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a third hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

WE HUMANS NEED TO WALK WITH THEM
We humans need to walk with them
WE LEAVE HERE FOR THE SAKE OF THEM
We leave here for the sake of them

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Ho-Oh, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes four more Unown forms to appear.

Southwest chamber

The southwest chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining HM03 (Surf) and HM04 (Strength). Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: WATER. Attempting to use a Water Stone here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Leppa Berry, Mystic Water, Stardust, and a Star Piece. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to another hidden room above the underground hall, where a final message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

THEY POSSESS POWER TO SENSE WITH MIND AND REJECT OUTSIDE
They possess power to sense with mind and reject outside

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Omanyte, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes the final seven Unown forms to appear.

Scheming for SlowpokeTails

As you approach the southern end of the route, you see a shady man loitering around to the west of the Pokémon Center. If spoken to, he tries to sell you a "tasty, nutritious SlowpokeTail" for the special price of $1,000,000. When he realizes that you do not have the cash, he shooes you away.

Fishing Guru 1

Visit the Pokémon Center to rest your weary team and prepare for the upcoming cave. Speak to the Fisherman near the counter to receive an Old Rod. With this fishing rod, you can now cast your line at any body of water to reel in Water-type Pokémon. The Old Rod is a low-end model, and is often only able to hook Magikarp.

Union Cave

Union Cave, 1F
Union Cave, B1F
Union Cave, B2F

Union Cave is a small cave on the southern end of Johto's peninsula, located between Routes 32 and 33. The ground-level tunnel simply connects the two routes together. Seawater wells up from underground in several areas, initially blocking access to the deepest parts of the cave. Exploring the lower levels at a later point reveals two more exits that lead back to the Ruins of Alph.

1F

Go west to reach an X Attack in the northwest area. Continue northward to battle Firebreather Ray, then take the stairs down to B1F.

B1F (North)

Go north to reach an X Defend, then pick up TM39 (Rock Tomb) in the southwest corner. The rest of the area cannot be explored without using Surf, so backtrack up the stairs to 1F.

Return to the Ruins
Requires: HM03 (Surf), HM04 (Strength)

Return later and use Surf to cross the water and reach two branching paths. The northern tunnel leads to the western part of the Ruins of Alph, which houses the third puzzle and the area's only patch of tall grass. The southern tunnel is blocked by a boulder; using Strength to clear a path leads to the fourth puzzle in the southwest part of the ruins.

1F

Go south to battle Hiker Daniel, then move southeastward to fight Hiker Russell. Turn south to reach Firebreather Bill; defeat him and collect the Great Ball in the corner to the south. Go west to pick up a Potion, then continue southward. Battle Poké Maniac Larry, then turn southeastward to reach an Awakening near the exit.

Down to the Depths
Requires: HM03 (Surf)

Return later and use Surf to cross the pool of water in the southwest area.

B1F (South)

Battle Poké Maniac Andrew and Surf eastward. Climb down the ladder next to Poké Maniac Calvin.

B2F

Cross the water to reach an Elixir in the northeast area. Sail southward to reach Ace Trainer Nick and a Hyper Potion on the east-central ridge. Go northwestward across the water to battle Ace Trainer Gwen, then head south to fight Ace Trainer Emma. On Fridays, a wild Lapras wanders its way in from the sea and appears in the southern-most pool.
