Abra (Japanese: ケーシィ Casey) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Kadabra at level 16.

Biology

Physiology

Abra is a bipedal Pokémon that loosely resembles a fox. It has two short, fox-like ears on the top of its head, and in the middle of its face, it has two eyes which are usually seen shut. It has a somewhat lighter color around its nose and mouth. Abra looks like it is wearing armor, as it has two pauldron-shaped pieces on its shoulders and and a fauld-like piece around its chest. It, like its evolutionary relatives, has three fingers on each hand, although much stubbier, and three toes, two in the front on either side, and one in the back near the ankle. It also has a tail, which is fairly thick and is the same gold color as the rest of its body, except for the brown band that is located around the top of the tail.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Possessing the ability to read minds, Abra can sense danger. When it does, it usually Teleports in order to escape danger. It has been observed that once every hour, it will teleport to another location. By hypnotizing itself, it can send itself into sleep and be able to teleport while doing so. If it decides to teleport randomly, it creates the illusion of multiple copies. However, it can sometimes know some of the attacks its evolved forms know (although, they wouldn't be as strong).

Behavior

Abra spend 18 hours a day sleeping. If it does not obtain enough sleep, it is unable to utilize its teleportation and telekinetic abilities. Despite this, Abra is capable of attacking while asleep, however, Abra usually avoid fighting by using Teleport to escape.

Habitat

Abra live in urban areas, close to humans. Mostly they are found in abandoned buildings left to disrepair.

Trivia

  • Up until Pokémon Yellow, Abra was depicted with a segmented tail.
  • "Hocus" was Abra's original English name.
  • Abra and its evolutions are in all the regional Pokédexes.
  • Abra and its evolutions are all named for magic words.
  • For the first three generations, Abra was the first Pokémon alphabetically in the Pokédex. However, in the fourth generation, this became Abomasnow.
  • The only sprite of Abra in which either of its eyes are visible is its sprite from Gold and even then, it is only squinting.
  • Abra is the first Template:Type2 Pokémon in National Pokédex order.

Origin

It is likely based on a magician.

Name origin

Abra's name is part of an incantation used in stage magic, Abracadabra. Its Japanese name may be derived from 消し飛ぶ keshitobu, to scatter away, referring to its tendency to teleport from battle. It may also be a reference to Edgar Cayce, a "sleeping prophet" who claimed to have visions in trance-like states. It also has similarities to foxes.
