Pineco's name is an abbreviation of pine cone , reflecting its pine cone-like appearance. Its Japanese name may be a combination of クヌギ kunugi , sawtooth oak and 玉 tama , ball. Its German name, Tannza, comes from Tannenzapfen . Its French name, Pomdepic, comes from pomme de pin and piquer .
