Togepi (Japanese: トゲピー Togepy) is a Template:Type2 baby Pokémon.

It evolves into Togetic via happiness, who evolves into Togekiss when exposed to radiation from a Template:Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Togepi is a small, light yellow Pokémon with a round body that's covered in a white egg shell that has red and blue rings on it. Togepi has stubby hands and round feet with two toes each. Togepi has black eyes and five spikes on its "head".

Special abilities

A Togepi is able to siphon the positive energy of others off of others, and release it to those in need of it. Togepi can also release poison from the spikes on its head.

Behavior

Togepi generally act childish and may be oblivious to danger, therefore extra care should be taken to keep them safe. They also have a very joyful nature. As a result, it is said that it shares its joy with those who take care of it and protect it from harm.

Habitat

Togepi are very rarely ever found in the wild. But they may be found in secluded areas.

In Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon, Ash finds a Pokémon egg. It hatches into a Togepi in Who Gets to Keep Togepi?, and since Misty is the first thing the baby Pokémon sees, it believes Misty is its mother. At the end of A Togepi Mirage!, Princess Sara found the Togepi of Legend, and Misty left her Togepi, which had just evolved to Togetic, in the Mirage Kingdom.

Several Togepi appeared in A Togepi Mirage! living in the Togepi Paradise.

In the manga

Gold receives an egg from Jasmine's Togetics, which eventually hatched into a Togepi. However, unlike regular Togepi, this one is quite violent, defeating a wild Gligar, who wanted to eat its egg, just after it was born. Also, the Togepi picked up on some of Gold's gambling habits as an egg.

When released from a Poké Ball, Togepi will use Metronome which will trigger Night Shade, Magnitude, Sing or Leech Seed.

Trivia

• Togepi's normal colors in Generation II show Togepi with red and black rings, while the shiny form has blue rings in place of red rings. This is due to color limitations of the GBC palette, which only allowed black, two colors, and a transparency (white). The colors of Togepi's rings later changed to red and blue for both forms to reflect its official artwork (a shiny Togepi from Generation III onward would also have orange-tinted flesh).
  • The frontal shiny sprite of Togepi show that the color of it's rings reverse, but the back view shows that the blue rings have turned pink and the red rings have stayed the same color.
• Togepi is the second Generation II Pokémon (after Ho-Oh) to appear in the Kanto series.
• Togepi's in-game cry sounds the same as its name.
• Togepi shares a number of traits with Riolu, notably that both are received as eggs from an NPC in the generation of their introduction, and when hatched, cannot breed until they have evolved. They are also the only two Baby Pokémon which are classed as Basic Pokémon in the TCG.
  • Additionally, their fully-evolved forms (Togekiss and Lucario) are the only non-legendary Pokémon that can learn the move Aura Sphere.
• Since Generation II, there is a non-player character giving away a Togepi egg in at least one game in every generation.
• Its Southern Islands card's Pokédex entry states that it can secrete poison from its spikes. Despite this, it can't learn any Poison-type moves by level-up, and the only one it can learn is Toxic, which must be taught through TM.

Origin

Togepi appears to be based on the concept of a baby hatchling of any of a number of species of animals. It could also possibly be based on an egg, with its evolutions based loosely on birds. There is also a possibility that it and its evolved forms may be based on tamagotchis.

Name origin

The toge in Togepi's name is 刺, spike. The "Pi" possibly comes from "piyopiyo", Japanese onomatopoeia for a bird chirping.
