The Lake of Rage (Japanese: いかりのみずうみ Lake of Rage), also known as Gyarados Lake, is a location in Johto. It is located just north of Mahogany Town, connecting it with Route 43, making it the northern-most accessible point of the Johto region. A large lake spans the area of the Lake of Rage, with a few residents living within the area. It is said to be the largest lake in the region. West of the lake lies a labyrinth of trees, which hides a house.
It is said the Lake of Rage was created the last time many Gyarados got together and stirred up a storm. The crater that remained filled with rainwater and became the Lake of Rage. In the middle of the lake dwells an alternate colored Red Gyarados and it had recently became irritable due to the radio waves transmitted by Team Rocket from their hideout in Mahogany Town. The Lake of Rage was considered a dangerous place to go, as the Red Gyarados started tipping over boats and scaring swimmers.
In the games
The Lake of Rage is set north of Route 43. Along the way to the Lake of Rage, the player will meet several members of Team Rocket. By surfing into the middle of the Lake of Rage, the player will encounter a Red Gyarados. After catching, defeating or fleeing from it, players will receive a Red Scale. Lance, of the Elite Four, will be waiting for the player on the shore afterwards, and will speak of the secret Team Rocket hideout in Mahogany Town.
In the northwest corner of the Lake of Rage, there is a house hidden within a labyrinth of trees. Inside, a man will give players TM10 (Hidden Power), for locating the secretive house. The path to this house begins in Route 43, on the western side, and crossing the lake is not required. Nearby this house, Wesley will give the player a Black Belt on Wednesdays.
In the southeast corner of the Lake of Rage, there is another house, where a Fishing Guru resides. His greatest dream is to see the world's largest Magikarp, and he regularly measures those brought to him in order to realize it. If the player brings him a large enough Magikarp, he will give the player an Elixir as a prize.
The player can also Fly to the Lake of Rage; it is the only destination in any game that can be flown to where the player will not land in front of a building.

In the anime
The Lake of Rage was featured in the Pokémon: Master Quest episodes Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution and Rage Of Innocence. Team Rocket attempts to capture the Red Gyarados, and also force other Pokémon to evolve and reach the "Red State". Their plans are thwarted by Lance, Ash and his friends, and Lance captures the Red Gyarados.
In the manga
Gold follows Silver to the Lake of Rage. Looking for him, Gold is surprised by a group of Gyarados thrashing around in the water. The locals flee, but Gold spots Silver running towards the lake. Nearly crushed by a glancing attack, Silver tells Gold that there are strange radio waves in the area, forcing the wild Pokémon to evolve. Silver flies off to find the source of the radio waves, leaving Gold alone to deal with multiple angry wild Gyarados by himself.
Interference on their PokéGear reveals the source to be a red Gyarados in the center of the swarm. Silver captures it, thus stopping the rest from rampaging. But it's only a matter of seconds before the two boys begin arguing again.
Suddenly, a fog covers the area. Gold instantly recognizes it as that of The Mask Of Ice. Secretly setting up a ring of razor-sharp icicles around them, the two boys fight along side each other, before the Mask's taunting gets the better of Silver. Chasing after him alone, Silver calls upon all of the wild Gyarados in the Lake (as the red Gyarados is the leader of them) and uses their combined strength to attack the Mask.
Meanwhile, Gold is busy dealing with some of the Mask's Pokémon by himself. After cleverly defeating them, he hurries after Silver, only to find the entire lake frozen solid. Silver and his Gyarados are knocked out. Gold runs to him, only to see a giant chunk of ice smash into Silver, throwing him into the water. Claiming that Silver was being punished, he then attacks Gold as well. The last few panels show Gold and his Aipom the instant before a giant chunk of ice is about to hit them, and the impact. Gold's hat and PokéGear are seen tossed into the air.
Trivia
- There is a hidden, possibly beta area in the games that includes a Pokémon Center, Poké Mart, and even a Pokémon Gym surrounding a lake that is a similar size and shape to the Lake of Rage. This area is inaccessible via normal gameplay.
- A remix of the background music heard here can be heard on most of the Sevii Islands' routes.
- Even though it is said that Team Rocket's radio signal is evolving all the Magikarp in Lake of Rage, Magikarp can still be found there at any time.
