A shard is a type of item that appears in Generations III and IV
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, shards can be traded individually for evolutionary stones. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, they can be traded in groups of 10 to a woman on Route 212 for a weather-changing TM. In Pokémon Platinum, three men in various locations in Sinnoh (Route 212, Snowpoint City, and the Survival Area) will teach Pokémon one of 38 predefined moves in exchange for a combination of red, yellow, green, and/or blue shards. Unlike in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, these moves can be taught more than once, only requiring the necessary shards. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, shards can be traded for Berries by a juggler that is found in either in Violet City that is near the Pokémon Center or in Fuschia City who is standing near Pal Park.
In Pokémon Platinum, one shard of each colour can be obtained by giving Mr. Fuego a Star Piece at the Fuego Ironworks.
In Generation III, shards are referred to as "shards of tools made in ancient times", by a treasure hunter. In the Underground's mining game, they appear to be broken pieces of plates. Specifically, the Red Shard appears to be from a Flame Plate, the Yellow Shard appears to be from a Zap Plate, the Green Shard appears to be from a Meadow Plate, and the Blue Shard appears to be from a Splash Plate.
