Sableye (Japanese: ヤミラミ Yamirami) is a dual-type Dark/Ghost Pokémon. Due to this, it is the first Pokémon to have no weakness.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Sableye are very diminutive hominid-like creatures with dark purple bodies. Their bodies are adapted for cave life as they are flexible enough to fit into small crevices while being tough enough to survive cave-ins. Their most distinguishing features are their gemstone-like eyes, which allow them to see in very little light. They have gemstones on their chests which grow as a result of its crystal and mineral diet. They are able to feed on such hard foods because of their sharp razor teeth, which are designed to crunch up rocks.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Sableye, along with its fellow Dark/Ghost-type Pokémon Spiritomb, has no natural weakness to a specific type unless moves like Odor Sleuth and Foresight are used on it, in which case Template:Type2 moves will become super-effective.

Behavior

There are old stories that say a Sableye will steal your soul if you look into its eyes. However, evidence suggests that these Pokémon are actually friendly, only playing their infamous tricks on travelers in order to get attention because they become lonely living in dark holes all by themselves.

Habitat

Sableye live in caves and abandoned mines, where they can readily find mineral deposits to eat.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

A Sableye's diet consists of raw minerals and gemstones.

In the anime

Sableye in the anime

Sableye first appeared in Ready, Willing, and Sableye. The Darkness Pokémon was playing tricks on Ash and his friends.

A Sableye also made a cameo appearance in What I Did for Love!.

Cassidy's Sableye debuted in Oaknapped.

Trivia

  • Sableye is one of the only two Pokémon created so far that are naturally and without help of an ability weak to no type. Sableye can only be hit by a super-effective move by removing an immunity, changing its type or using a Shadow move after purification in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
    • Since Sableye is one of the five Pokémon that do not have a weakness, it and Spiritomb are commonly hacked to have the ability Wonder Guard. This hack is commonly referred to as Wondereye.
  • Sableye is known for having both a ruby and a sapphire on its body. Its Shiny form appears to have an emerald on the chest. This is most likely a reference to the three games of the generation it debuted in.
  • Sableye seems to be the counterpart of Mawile. Both of them are version-exclusive of Ruby and Sapphire, as well as in HeartGold and SoulSilver as Swarm Pokémon. They also have the same base stats total (Specifically, with the same amounts of base HP and Speed stats). By comparing their type each other, Sableye is dual-type Pokémon with no weakness, while Mawile is the single-type with the most number of resistances.
  • Sableye shares the same species name with Murkrow. They are both known as Darkness Pokémon.
  • Sableye is the only non Steel-type Pokémon that can learn Metal Burst.
  • Sableye has the lowest base stat total of all fully evolved Dark-type Pokémon.

Origin

Sableye is a stylization of the Hopkinsville Goblin, a creature from an alleged Kentucky "alien encounter" described as having shining eyes, small legs, clawed arms and swaying hips (a movement that Sableye does indeed imitate in the 3-D Pokémon games). The Hopkinsville aliens are most famous in Japan, where they have appeared in other anime and video games.

Name origin

Sableye's name is a combination of sable and eye; it may also be a play on the word able-eyed. Yamirami may be a combination of 闇 yami, darkness, and 藪睨み yabunirami, a squint or 睨み nirami, glare.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Zobiris
French Tenefix From ténèbre and fixer.
Korean 깜까미 Kkamkkami
Chinese (Taiwan) 勾魂眼 Gōu Hún Yǎn May mean "Soul-evoking eye". 勾 can also mean to "reach for", to "attract", to "collude", or to "induce/seduce/lure".
