Dusknoir (Japanese: ヨノワール Yonoir) is a non-player character from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. He is a supporting character that plays a significant role in the game. He was first introduced to the player as a famous and wise Pokémon, exploring the world and solving mysteries, but later turns out to be the secondary antagonist. At the end of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, he is reformed with help from Grovyle.

History

Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky

Primal Dialga sends Dusknoir, his henchman, back in time to pursue Grovyle and the human main character when they themselves head back in time to stop the planet from becoming paralyzed. In the present time, he successfully pretends to be an explorer who is famous for his exceptional wisdom and solo explorations. When he first arrives at Wigglytuff's Guild looking for any leads, where he meets the player, he does not know the player's name, and actually rescues the player and the partner from the Luxray clan (Manectric clan in Explorers of Sky). However, when the player and partner approach Dusknoir with questions about the player's Dimensional Scream ability and ask if he knows anything about where the player came from, he realizes the Pokémon standing before him is the very same human he was tasked with capturing.

Encountering Dusknoir

After realizing that the player has lost the majority of their memory and knowing Grovyle's presence in this time will become public knowledge when his Time Gear 'thefts' cause him to be spotted by a Pokémon guarding one of them, Dusknoir devises a plan to trick the player and Grovyle into unknowingly betraying each other. While partially successful as he manages to stop Grovyle from acquiring the Time Gear at Crystal Cave, Dusknoir is unable to apprehend him. Nevertheless, he quickly devises a fall-back plan: he reveals that both he and Grovyle are from the future, but portrays Grovyle as a criminal intending to cause the planet's paralysis to shake off any pursuers and says that he is there to bring Grovyle to justice. All in attendance fall for Dusknoir's lie and help with his and the Lake guardians' plan to prevent him from stealing any more Time Gears. After Grovyle is caught and sent back to the future, Dusknoir calls the duo up to him just before he leaves, and says hastily that it is too soon for good-byes, grabbing them both and taking them to the future before the rest of the crowd even realizes what has just happened.

Having securing his two time-travelling prisoners alongside the partner, Dusknoir is ordered by Primal Dialga to execute them. However, due to some quick thinking by Grovyle, the trio manage to escape. Though initially furious over what happened, Dusknoir realizes he can use this to his advantage by also catching the Celebi that had willingly provided Grovyle and the player the means to travel back in time. He sends his Sableye minions to covertly track the progress of the three escapees while he informs Primal Dialga of the recent development and secures its assistance should they get too close to escaping. The trap works and all four fugitives are cornered, and after the arrival of Primal Dialga cows Grovyle into surrender, Dusknoir uses the time to reveal the player's true identity as Grovyle's lost partner and how he misled them. This moment of gloating quickly blows up in his face when the player's partner, now finally accepting Dusknoir's true nature after being stuck in denial throughout their time in the future, refused to give up and made a spontaneous plan with Celebi. This plan succeeds even despite Dialga's attempt to stop it, allowing the player, partner, and Grovyle to escape from the future for good while Celebi also narrowly avoids capture.

Knowing that Grovyle and the player will have to go to the Hidden Land eventually, Dusknoir has himself and his Sableye minions transported there to await them instead of searching for them again. After a rough fight, Dusknoir prepares to defeat the party by launching a massive finishing move at them, but Grovyle and the main characters manage to deflect it back into the 'mouth' on his stomach, severely injuring him and sending his Sableye running back to the future in disbelief that Dusknoir had lost. Unwilling to let himself be defeated, he resorts to one last trump card: he reveals that, should their plan actually succeed, every Pokémon from the future, including the three of them, will be erased from existence due to being from a future that will no longer exist. Though it fails to discourage them, this distraction allows him to get back up and unleash an attack on the player with the intent of finishing things, but Grovyle steps in. Grovyle then restrains Dusknoir and takes him back to the future with him to prevent him from stopping the player and partner from changing the future. Ultimately, Dusknoir, Grovyle, Celebi, Primal Dialga, the Sableye, and the player are all erased from time when the player and their partner stop Temporal Tower's collapse.

In the Future of Darkness

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky exclusive special episode In The Future of Darkness, Dusknoir and Grovyle have just arrived back in the dark future after Grovyle's sacrifice in the past. Dusknoir manages to come to minutes before Grovyle and, upon being informed by a nearby Sableye that Primal Dialga has managed to capture Celebi during Dusknoir's return to the past, quickly devises a new plan. He instructs the Sableye to 'betray' him under the appearance of Primal Dialga having ordered his replacement after his defeat at the Hidden Land, then manipulate events so that Grovyle will be caught in an electric field at the end of the Icicle Forest with the help of the same Spiritomb that attacked Grovyle before, causing Grovyle's spirit to melt away and allow Dusknoir to possess his empty body, travel to the past 'again', and ruin things there. The ruse goes off without a hitch and the two of them, despite being sworn enemies up to this point, team up together at the end of Barren Valley to 'find' Primal Dialga.

Dusknoir and Grovyle

As they travel through the now-collapsed Temporal Tower and Dark Ice Mountain, Grovyle and Dusknoir begin to develop a sort of kinship with each other. After surviving an encounter with a rabid Mamoswine, which leaves him injured from shielding Grovyle just before the encounter, Dusknoir eventually asks Grovyle why he is willing to sacrifice his life to change the past (hence eliminating the dark future from existence). Grovyle explains that he believes it better to live a short life with glory and accomplishment than a long, empty life, noting that he would one day depart from life even if the past isn't changed and thus the length of his life should be less important than the deeds done in his life. He also adds that if he were to do something big (like stopping the planet's paralysis), even if he were to disappear, his actions would be remembered – and so he wouldn't 'truly' disappear. These ideas and concepts do strike a chord with Dusknoir, although he shows no outward sign of it.

At the end of Icicle Forest, Dusknoir's trap is successfully sprung with Celebi as bait held by Spiritomb, and after again detailing how Grovyle was fooled, he indeed intends to follow through with his plan. However, Grovyle, speaking of his newly formed trust in Dusknoir, believes that not everything he did was a total lie and that Dusknoir did identify with him at some point during the journey. Grovyle is correct – Dusknoir begins to question whether self-preservation in a bleak future is a good idea, violently writhing from this internal struggle. Just before the icicles' electricity wholly melts away Grovyle's spirit, Dusknoir saves him by knocking him out of range, much to everyone's surprise.

At this point, Primal Dialga appears and viciously attacks Dusknoir for his betrayal. The Sableye, having witnessed these events and also been swayed by Grovyle's words, work up their courage and strike at Dialga to protect Dusknoir but are effortlessly blasted away, all while Grovyle is too hurt to do anything but watch. This violent display of infighting terrifies Spiritomb, causing it to release Celebi and flee for its life. Now free, Celebi tries to attack Dialga as well, but stops when she sees something unusual: an aurora appears in the sky, and winds start to blow. The effects of Dialga's defeat in the past (the final battle in the main storyline) begin to take effect; time is slowly starting to flow again, and as a result, Primal Dialga goes completely berserk, senselessly blasting everyone aside before charging toward Vast Ice Mountain. Dusknoir, now sincerely sharing Grovyle's goal, teams up with him and Celebi in an effort to find and take down Primal Dialga for good. After cornering Primal Dialga at a Passage of Time, they defeat him, and the effects of the past finally take effect in full force; the Pokémon of the future start to vanish as the flow of time is fully restored. After Primal Dialga vanishes, Dusknoir asks Grovyle one final question: whether this sacrifice is worth his life. With Grovyle's assurance that it is, he finally feels content and vanishes with no regrets; Grovyle and Celebi follow soon after. Soon, everything in the future is erased from time.

However, the Pokémon of the future eventually find themselves in a newly restored future, appearing at the Passage of Time, utterly surprised they have not vanished. Dialga, now restored to his normal state, remarks that their resurrection is due to the actions of "a more powerful being than itself", and promises that he will take care of this new future as he sees right. With joy and hope restored to the future world, each of them is free to live their life as they truly wish.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon

Dusknoir later appears as a recruitable character in Super Mystery Dungeon and is linked to Grovyle, Sableye, and Dialga. His connection request tricks the player into a Monster House ambush; upon his defeat, Dusknoir admits his intent was to test the player, and freely joins them afterward.

Personality and characteristics

As it was first observed once he arrived into the player's present, Dusknoir appears to be very knowledgeable and warm with everyone he interacted with in Treasure Town and extended his knowledge and warmth to Wigglytuff's Guild; however, this is only a facade. Dusknoir's true personality is that he is a Pokémon bent on making sure the future stays as dark as twisted and will go to no ends to make sure this goal is achieved. Dusknoir's true nature is foreshadowed as he appeared to faintly smile (only observed by the player) when the player revealed their name to him at the beach when the player and their partner show Dusknoir where the player was found.

Dusknoir's nature is expanded in the Special Episode In the Future of Darkness where he revealed to Grovyle that all he wants is to exist without disappearing prematurely (via restoring the Time Gears and time in the past). Dusknoir revealed to have an intense hatred for Grovyle, evidenced by when he was about to advance upon him after returning to the future, but that changed after Dusknoir saved Grovyle from a falling chunk of ice suspended in midair, albeit part of a secret plan, and Grovyle had a heart-to-heart with Dusknoir. Dusknoir's twisted personality dissipated once Grovyle was about to lose his life and came to his rescue and changed his ways to help Grovyle and Celebi stop Primal Dialga from causing unthinkable calamities by crossing through a Passage of Time.

Regardless of his being an antagonist or a partner to Grovyle, Dusknoir is shown to have a great amount of loyalty to one he chooses to be aligned with, indicating him to be something of a follower than a leader, but after he changes his heart, he shows a great deal of dedication to helping Grovyle and Celebi restore the future.

Quotes

  • Chapter 10
"No, no! Think nothing of it! The honor is all mine! There is no greater pleasure than visiting Wigglytuff's Guild! It's famous!"
"...I see. Well, that must have been quite a disappointment for your guild!"
"I had heard that Wigglytuff's Guild was mounting an expedition to find Fogbound Lake. I came here hoping to hear about your latest triumph..."
"Not at all! It's no trouble to me! This gave me an opportunity to visit you! I plan to stay in Treasure Town for a short while. May I visit you occasionally during my stay? Your guild constantly receives t he latest news. Good information would be a big help on my explorations!"
"No, no! If it's autographs you want, I'm sure that I can oblige! But.. information? I'm afraid you flatter me. I have very little information. However, I would be delighted if I may be of service to you. If there is anything you wish to ask of me, please don't hesitate."
"I think I'll go for a stroll in Treasure Town. Please do feel free to approach me with anything. Good day!"
"Hello there! You're from the guild, if I'm not mistaken?"
"No, no. Simply enjoying a chat!"
"A Water Float? Now that is quite the precious item!"
"A Water Float is an item specifically for Azurill. It can be obtained only by trading precious treasures again and again. As such, it is said to be an exceedingly rare item."
"Good day to you all. Is something the matter?"
"Of course. I believe you're referring to the Water Float? I seem to recall you'd heard that it was on the beach."
"Good day! You're from the guild! I've been getting acquainted with your Treasure Town. This is an excellent place. The climate is quite pleasant. The town is well served by shops. The quality of life here must be cheery and charming. Why, it's so welcoming, I might like to settle here myself... Hoo-hoo-ha!" (If spoken to after meeting Azurill and Marill)
"I see. That is terrible indeed. It's hard to image why anyone would do something so wretched. It must take some pathetic thugs to stoop so low."
"One more thing... Where has Team <team> gone?"
"Pardon? Did you say Amp Plains? But in Amp Plains, at this time of year... It's the season for... No! This is ruinous! Team <team name> is in grave danger!"
"I must leave for Amp Plains immediately!"

Amp Plains

"Stop! Stop this instant! Their words are sincere. They trespass, but they don't intend to make claims on your territory!"
"I am the explorer Dusknoir! Your fury is righteous and just, Luxray! Especially in light of your tribe has suffered on these grounds... Your hostility toward any who trespass here is natural! This place is your haven! A place where you find solace. I understand completely! On behalf o these unwitting trespassers, I offer the sincerest apology! There entered here unbidden, but they did so without malice! They mean no harm! We will leave you in peace as soon as our errand is complete! Believe us, Luxray!"TD
"That was Luxray and the Luxio tribe. They are a nomadic tribe that always stays on the move. They roam in constant search of places that are hospitable to them. And Amp Plains is often lashed by thunderstorms this time of year. They find it to their liking, so they dwell in Amp Plains this time of year. But, tragically, they were once attacked by enemies here without warning... And I understand that they suffered terrible injuries. From that day forward, Luxray and his tribe were extremely suspicious of all those who came here. So if anyone trespassed upon these grounds, well... they would strike first, for fear of being stricken! Somehow, at some point... That became a law among Luxray's tribe."TD
"I am the explorer Dusknoir! Manectric! You have every right to be angry! Please, believe me! Manectric!"S
"A group of Manectric and Electrike. Ever since, Manectric's group has been very sensitive about trespassers here. So if anyone trespassed upon these grounds, well... they would strike first, for fear of being stricken! Somehow, at some point... That became a law among Manectric's group."S
"There's no mistaking it. Without a doubt, this is a Water Float"
I would imagine that it was put there deliberately. Whoever did this knew that you would eventually get to this spot. Of course, they knew that this territory is guarded zealously by Luxray. They put the lost item here, hoping to provoke a clash between you and Luxray's tribe. Wasn't that your intention... you sneaking scoundrels!?"TD
I would imagine that it was put there deliberately. Whoever did this knew that you would eventually get to this spot. The fact that Manectric protects its territory is well-known. Someone expected a confrontation between you and Manectric... You were set up. Wasn't that your intention... you sneaking scoundrels!?"S
"It's about time that you came out of hiding and showed yourselves!"
"Shall we settle this?"
"They certainly are quick when it comes to...skedaddling. I'm afraid our efforts would be wasted if we were to give chase now. I think we should deliver the Water Float to the young brothers."

Chapter End

"No trouble at all. I'm very happy for you. It's wonderful that your Water Float has come back to you."
"Excuse me? A dream, you say? BY dream, what do you mean?"
"What?! Well, that's... that's... The Dimensional Scream!"
"I see...so you found our friend unconscious right here."
"Then you regained consciousness. Though you'd lost your memory."
"I beg your pardon?! H-human?! But our friend here seems to be a Pokemon in every obvious way!"
"A human... with the Dimensional Scream ability... You...are...? You said you know your name at least? And... that name would be...?"
"Ah! I see... You're...<player>..."
"...No. It means nothing to me, unfortunately"
"I'm sincerely sorry I couldn't help you with that... However... I do know about he ability that <player> possesses."
"The ability to see the future or past by touching something... That ability is known as the Dimensional Scream."
"Indeed. How such an ability is learned, that is unknown. But sounds and images slice across the boundaries of time, breaching objects and reaching into Pokémon. To manifest as visions... And that is all that I know about the extraordinary ability."
"Well, perhaps this is why we became friends. To help unravel the secret of <player>'s transformation into a Pokémon! I offer you my full cooperation!"
"Yes. To be perfectly candid... I can't stand knowing that there's something I don't know! Quite honestly, that is the full truth of it! Ha-ha-ha! Hoo-hoo-ha!"
"Could something be the matter?"
"I will go with you!"
  • Chapter 11
"Just one moment! I'm afriad I don't quite understand... There was a Time Gear at Fogbound Lake? I did not know that... Did I not hear quite a different tale about your recent expedition. I recall being told that your expedition to Fogbound Lake ended in failure."
"Wigglytuff... I believe I understand the situation now. I will join in you guild's pursuit of Grovyle."
"No, no! It's my honor entirely."
"I will lend my support to capturing that thieving Grovyle. Let us work together ...and catch that Grovyle. (If spoken to before returning to the guild)
"The Northern Desert is not only wide and deep, it is raked by vicious sandstorms. Please, do take care!"
"The Northern Desert is vast and deep. It is also frequently scoured by savage sandstorms. Please do take care!" (If spoken to before first visit to Northern Desert)
"Ah, this is vexing. I thought the search locations we chose held promise. I blame my lack of knowledge. I am truly chastened."
"Nonetheless, our efforts have ended in failure. That is a fact. But being hard on ourselves is pointless. Let us reconsider our plan. We'll devise a different strategy tomorrow!"
"I'm sorry. I'm certain that we'll devise our next plan soon. Until then, please conduct searches on your own. That's all I can ask of you now. (If spoken to after clearing Northern Desert)
"I'm sorry. We are considering the possible places where Time Gears may be hidden. But we haven't been able to narrow our choices to any sites that appear promising." (After closing the day without finishing Quicksand Cave)
"I sincerely apologize" (After closing the day without finishing Quicksand Cave)
  • Chapter 12
"Maybe not. Not necessarily."
"There are some clues. One Time Gear was at Fogbound Lake, guarded by Uxie, correct? Another Time Gear was at the Underground lake, guarded by Mesprit."
"I should have known. There is an ancient legend... It is believed that Uxie is the Being of Knowledge. And that Mesprit is the Being of Emotion. But three Pokémon in total represent the spiritual world... and are said to keep the world in balance."
"Yes. The last of the trio is Azelf, known as the Being of Willpower. Uxie and Mesprit both guarded Time Gears. Therefore, Azelf may likewise be protecting a Time Gear."
"That's correct. Those three Pokemon, Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf... All three are said to dwell at lakes. It's a fact that both Uxie and Mesprit were encountered at lakes. As uch, I believe that Azelf will be found at a lake somewhere. Let's keep something in mind. Uxie's lake located on a high plateau. Mesprit's lake was hidden far beneath a desert. In both cases, the lakes were in unusual places. So the lake where Azelf lives... It will be somewhere that we least expect it to be."
"Thank you... It's really nothing..."
"Ah, I have an idea. Bidoof..."
"I have a request. That crystal you picked up previously... May I borrow it briefly?"
"Of course. But rest assured we won't take it away. Or do anything of the sort. Now, <player>... There is something I would like you to do, <player>. Please touch Bidoof's crystal."
"If a secret remains hidden in Crystal Cave... If <player> touches the crystal... It may trigger the Dimensional Scream. It may trigger a vision!"
"I desperately wish to borrow the crystal because of <player>'s ability. Please, may we?"
"Everyone, please hold on! Yes, it is true that it may have been a vision of the past. But it could have been a vision of the future. If you would be so kind, could you remind us what Mesprit said, <partner>. Who informed Mesprit via telepathy that a Time Gear was stolen? If I recall correctly, did you say that it was Uxie?"
"But the name Azelf...?"
"Then there's still a chance! If Mesprit claimed that Azelf had alerted her about the stolen Time Gear... Then <player>'s Dimension would surely be from the past... But that was not the case. Mesprit did not mention Azelf... Therefore... It's possible that the event happens in the future!"
"One more point. And this is a sure thing. Upon Touching the crystal, <player> experienced the Dimensional Scream. That vision indicated the presence of a Time Gear, which means... Maybe what we seek is in Crystal Cave! Perhaps there is a passage there that leads to a Time Gear."
"Of course, we may already be too late. Or we may still have time! As long as a chance remains, we must never give up! It's our only option!"
"I will accompany you to Crystal Cave. Let's do our best, everyone."

Crystal Lake

"Stop!"
"Are you all right, <partner>? Please! Let me handle this!"
"It's been too long! It wasn't easy finding you, Grovyle!"
"Grovyle! You're not getting away this time!"
"So you'll fight. Then so be it. But can you win? Against ME?"
"That blasted Grovyle! He never intended to fight me at all! There no escaping ME!"
  • Chapter 13

Chapter Start

"Ah! <partner> and <player>! You are safe! I am so relieved!"
"I gave chase to Grovyle. But he slipped away from me."
"I'm sorry to interrupt. Perhaps I should explain from here..."
"Everyone! While we should be happy that we protected the Time Gear this time... The fact is...Grovyle remains at large. Therefore, we cannot afford to feel safe and secure. Grovyle will most certainly make another attempt to steal the Time Gear."
"There is another matter that is to all of this. It is an extremely important matter that i must share with you. I would like to explain it to you now. First... Earlier, <partner> asked me the following question. Did I know Grovyle from before all this happened? That is correct. I do know Grovyle from before all this."
"What I am about to say... may be beyond your belief! But it also happens to be the truth. Furthermore, if what I'm about to reveal isn't stopped, calamity is certain! I, therefore, ask for your undivided attention. First, Grovyle is... Grovyle is a Pokémon who came from the future."
"Grovyle... In the world of the future, he will be a notorious criminal. He has a large bounty on his head. To avoid capture in the future, he fled. And in fleeing, he escaped to this, the world of the past. After arriving in this time, Grovyle plotted... until he hit upon an utterly catastrophic plan."
"It was nothing less than... causing the planet's paralysis."
"Yes. If a planet becomes paralyzed, all movement upon it ceases. When a Time Gear is removed, the flow of time slows in its region. As many more are taken, time slows in an ever-larger area. Eventually, the planet's flow slows down so much that it stops entirely. Ultimately, the planet reaches a state of total paralysis..."
"In a world the planet has become paralyzed... No winds blow... The day never comes... Neither spring nor summer ever comes... It's a world of unrelenting darkness...It would be no exaggeration to call it the complete ruin of the world."
" The way time has been gong out of control lately... That, too, is caused by the thefts of the Time Gears. If the Time Gears continue to be stolen, this world will end in ruin."
"Ah, yes. What Corphish said makes perfect sense. Under normal circumstances, it's true, there is no way that I should know these things. So, why do I know these things? It's because... I, too...am a Pokémon from the future."
"My objective is to capture Grovyle. It is for that reason...that I came from the future. I needed to know as much as possible to ensure the capture of Grovyle. I therefore studied everything could about this world while in the future. That is why I know so much about this world."
"I have felt terrible not saying anything. I'm sincerely sorry for not revealing my identity. I am full of contrition. But...what if I had been open about my identity from the start? What would have happened if I had said that I was from the future? Who would have taken me seriously?"
"Also, I needed to avoid alerting Grovyle to my presence. I decided that I should keep my identity hidden while I went about with my work."
"But...it is also a fact that I have been deceiving you. For keeping silent about my identity... I sincerely apologize."
"Everyone, thank you so much. We as Pokémon must all work as one...to capture Grovyle... then put an end to Grovyle's calamitous plot!"
"I see. You're suggesting that we bat the trap."
"But...that would mean exposing you to danger as the bait."
"Then...I understand."
"Everyone, let me explain our plan! Please, pay attention and do your part! First, I would like everyone to spread a rumor, far and wide! Get the word out about the three Pokémon, Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. Spread word that the trio has returned to Crystal Lake to seal the Time Gear away. Please spread the rumor as much as possible."
"That's correct. But Grovyle won't be convinced by rumor alone. That is why I must ask the trio of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf to do something. I must ask them to actually go to Crystal Lake."
"I'm sorry. I'm grateful for your kind offers. But, for the capture of Grovyle, I would prefer to work alone."
"Grovyle will be extremely wary. Even if he were to realize that Azelf and the other two have truly gone to Crystal Lake... He will be cautious in the extreme. So, if we were to lay a massive ambush for at Crystal Lake... He will undoubtedly notice the unusual number of Pokémon in the area. I'm afraid Grovyle will not be lured out by Azelf and the others that way. So I must apologize...and insist upon capturing Grovyle myself."
"I'm terribly sorry, <partner>. This time I hope to capture Grovyle without mistakes. Please forgive my selfishness."
"Thank you for hearing me out, everyone. I realize I am asking a huge favor. But please do you part in our plan. And... Let's capture Grovyle using whatever means necessary!"

Chapter End

"Everyone! Today, I would like to share excellent news with you. Finally...Grovyle... Grovyle has been captured! This was all made possible by your selfless support and cooperation! I can't thank you enough! As you can see, Grovyle is a vicious and wicked Pokémon. His capture should result in lasting peace for your world."
"But...I must also deliver a sad piece of news. It is time for me to return to the future. Everyone! I must now bid you farewell."
"Uxie... Mesprit... Azelf... I entrust you with the rest."
"The task is yours."
"Oh, no, no... You have been most kind and helpful. I hope you will continue to work to preserve the peace."
"Now... I'm afraid the time has come."
"Everyone! Though it pains me..."
"Oh, yes. Before I go... I must see two Pokemon... <partner>! And <player>!"
"Well...this is...good-bye... Or is it?"
"It's too soon for farewells!"
"You two... are coming with me!"
  • Chapter 14
"Good."
"Very well. Sableye. Those three... we need to be rid of them."
"Pay them no heed. You may get ready.
"Very well. But be vigilant to the end. Don't take your eyes off them. Especially that Grovyle."
"Commence... now!"
"Wh-what is this?!"
"Compose yourselves! It's only a Luminous Orb! Its effect wears off quickly!"
"B-Blast it! That Grovyle! He fled using the flash from that Luminous Orb as cover! They won't get away with this! Come!"'
  • Chapter 15
"The stage has been set for the capture of the traitors. When the time comes... It may be necessary for us to beg your help, Master Dialga..."
"...As you wish. By your leave, we shall proceed."
"Stop there! That will do! "'
"Hello to you all. It's been a while."
"Your scurrying carried you far... But sad to say... That's all over now."
"Spare yourself the effort. You have no chance of succeeding."
"Grovyle. Are you really such a fool to think that I'd come alone?"
"Now, Master Dialga!"
"What's wrong Grovyle? Where's your bravado now?"
"What's the matter, Grovyle? It's not like you to give up so easily."
".................... Ha! Ha-ha-ha! Hoo-hoo-ha!"
"Ha! So you claim someone went to the past with you... Incidentally, what's the name of your partner? Go on. Say the name."
"Can't tell em?"
"Hoo-hoo-ha! Precisely! My good fellow! Grovyle, that is unmistakably your friend <player>!"
"That Pokemon you see was once a human!"
"Master Dialga had given me a mission... It was to get rid of you, Grovyle, and <player>. Because you fled to the past. I traveled through time in pursuit of you both. In the past, I gathered intelligence that might help me find you. And at one point, I met Team <name>. But at that point, I suspected nothing... When they mentioned the Dimensional Scream, I was skeptical at first... But then an idea began to take shape in my mind... And... So, a former human... With no memories... A human that possessed the Dimensional Scream... I became convinced then! There was no doubt! This <player> was the very one I was seeking! So that <player> had developed amnesia... and was transformed into a Pokemon... which must be because of the accident during your time travel... Well, <player>'s memory loss was a lucky stroke for me! After all, your partner failed to recognize who I am. It was quite easy to win over your partner's trust. And it was also easy to drag them into the future when the time came!"
"Which left you, Grovyle... the last part of the job to finish."
"Grovyle and <player>! With the both of you here... Everything will end when we finally dispose of you. That will finally put an end to Grovyle's glimmer of hope! Everything ends! Everything ends for you! Ha-ha-hoo-hoo-ha!"
"Ha! Have you finally come to terms with your fate?"
"We shall be rid of you for all time! This is the end... for you!"
"Master Dialga!"
"There they are!"
"Gah..."
  • Chapter 19
"That's quite enough of that."
"Ha-ha-ha! Hoo-hoo-ha!
"Humph... Quite simple, actually. I had Master Dialga warp us here directly. After all, I knew that you would inevitably come here. Waiting here spared us the bother of having to search for you."
"Hoo-hoo-ha! Unfortunately, you are coming back to the future with me. Sableye! Take them to the dimensional hole!"
"Sableye! Into the dimensional hole with them!"
"Well, well... You display some feeble resistance, knowing that it's futile?"
"Humph... You leave me with no choice. I'll simply defeat you here, then take you to the future. It makes no difference to me."
"The odds are stacked overwhelmingly against you. How much resistance can you even serve up? Show me! Swarm them!"
"They vanished!? No, that isn't it. They just managed to retreat. ...Humph. So be it. There is no need to panic. They will return. They have to. And we'll be waiting. Ha-ha-ha! Hoo-hoo-ha!" (If player was defeated)
"Humph. Up to now, I've had to chase after you. But now, all that's required is for you to come to me. How deliciously convenient." (Rematch)
"You're not going to slip through our grasp now! This is it!" (Rematch)
"Gwoh... Gwwwooh... Gwwwwwwwoooohhhhh! I... I... I... I... refuse to lose!" (Defeated)
"Humph. So foolhardy. You dared to challenge me? For all the effort in the world... with your puny power... ...you had no chance of winning from the start!"
"Humph. You've done admirably well for someone as pitiful as you... But it's all over now. This is... the end!"
"GWAAAAAAAAAAH!"
"GWOH! GWWWOOOOHH! GWWWWWOOOOOOOHHHH!
"Urggh..."
"Urggh... Grovyle... <player>... Is this really... Is this really what you want? If history is changed... We Pokémon of the future will disappear..."
"It won't be just me. Both of you... Grovyle and <player> alike... Since you come from a future that will cease to exist, you will both disappear too... Is that what you really want?"
"...Gwoh! GWWWOOOOOHHHH"
"I won't... You'll never change history!"
"So you shielded <player>, Grovyle!? That's taken a heavy toll on you! Very well! You're going down first!"
"Wh-what are you doing!?"
Wha..."
"Gah! Those are...!"
"Gwoh! Unhand me! Release me!"
"Gwaaaaah!"

Dusknoir in the anime

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness, Dusknoir was trying to stop Grovyle and Team Poképals from taking the Relic Fragment and going to Temporal Tower on Primal Dialga's orders. He ambushed them at the top of the tower along with several Sableye, and attempted to escape via portal. However, his army of Sableye were no match for Team Poképals, and Dusknoir was ultimately defeated by a combination of Grovyle's Energy Ball, Chimchar's Fire Spin, and Piplup's Whirlpool.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing Exploration Team

Dusknoir in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blazing Exploration Team

Dusknoir appears as a major character in this manga, serving the same role he does in the games.

Dusknoir first appears after Honō and Totodile defeat some thieves that stole a treasure from them. He asks if the two are an Exploration Team, to which Honō confirms.

Later, Dusknoir appears with an injured Mesprit and Uxie. He reveals that the cause of their injuries was the Time Gear thief, Grovyle. After Honō has a vision of another Pokémon, Azelf, being attacked by Grovyle, Dusknoir confirms it as the Dimensional Scream ability. Falsely fearing Azelf's safety, Dusknoir takes Honō and Totodile to the Crystal Crossing to protect it from the thief, Grovyle.

After Grovyle nearly defeats Honō and Totodile, Dusknoir arrives to save them. Seeing Dusknoir distracts Grovyle long enough for Honō and Dusknoir long enough to defeat and capture him. Afterward, they take Grovyle back to the Guild, where Dusknoir reveals that Grovyle is actually a thief from the future. Dusknoir explains that he is from the future as well, and went back in time to take Grovyle back to his time to be executed. After sending Grovyle into the future, Dusknoir reveals his true nature by suddenly grabbing Honō and Totodile and throwing them forward in time.

Later, Dusknoir and his Sableye minions prepare to execute Grovyle, Honō, and Totodile. However, Honō and Grovyle use their quick thinking to escape unharmed. Later, Dusknoir, the Sableye, and their leader, Primal Dialga intercepts Grovyle's group at the Passage of Time to prevent them from going back into the past and change history with the help of Celebi. As they battle their opponents, Dusknoir reveals that Honō is actually the human partner of Grovyle's that went missing some time ago. This confuses Grovyle, who remembers Honō as a human instead of a Pokémon.

When Honō tries to escape using Celebi's power, Dusknoir has Primal Dialga stop them with its time controlling abilities. Dusknoir tries attacking them once more, but Celebi sacrifices herself by blocking the attack and sends the heroes back in time to change the past.

Dusknoir appears one last time at the Hidden Land, to stop Honō and Totodile from fixing the Temporal Tower and fixing the future. Despite their best efforts, Dusknoir easily shrugs off their attacks and nearly defeats them. Before he can finish Honō and Totodile off, Grovyle returns with the Time Gears and saves them. Together, the three manages to counter Dusknoir's strongest attack, defeating the villain in the process.

Defeated, Dusknoir reveals that if they stop the dark future from happening, all of the Pokémon in the future will disappear, Grovyle and Honō included. Grovyle reveals that he, Honō, and Celebi all knew this was going to happen but decided to change the past anyway. Soon after, Grovyle sacrifices himself by pushing Dusknoir back to the future along with himself.
