Badge Names/Spacing

For the record, is it "Boulderbadge" or "Boulder Badge"? Also, I figure listing what Badges do both here and in the Gym Leader page is redundant. I think it is more appropriate here. uhhh... And, how do you make it so that pages can link to individual badges within this page? Like Badge#Boulder Badge Is that possible? --greengiant

Is it REALLY necessary to imply that the Japanese word for "badge" is different from the English word? --Ketsuban

To Ket, I think someone may have gone a bit overboard on our translation thing. ^^; And with respect to the #___Badge, yeah, I'll edit that so it's possible. And I believe the name is Boulderbadge, with no space, although this in turn is probably due to the game's character limit. evkl 00:33, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Use the ==== as the header title for all badges. And maybe debold the names of the badges? I'm not sure... And yeah, that header will allow Badges#Cascade Badge and the like. evkl 01:08, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

May I ask why you replaced all the japanese text with question marks? or am I just viewing the page wrong? --greengiant

It seems that multiple recent edits by people are leaving the Japanese text in pages converted to ???... --Meowth346

Hoenn/Shin'ō Badges

Does anyone know where the Kanto and Johto badges' images came from, or who made them? I think it would look a lot better if we had something like that for the other two regions... I mean, if anyone has some drawing skill and can draw out the Hoenn badges, then digitally color them like the other ones, that'd be a good substitute for that anime screenshot... Same for the Shin'ō ones, if we get their colors ahead of time... Depends on how fast we get through Shin'ō in the anime, though, I'd suppose. Tom Temprotran 02:44, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

From the adapted Chapter Books: Read the excerpt, flip a page and notice Coral-Eye Badge. How canonical is that? I don't know, but really it's our only evidence. It's how we figured out it's Cissy instead of Sissy, I think. --Greengiant 18:49, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Gymbaliar

Should we mention somewhere in the anime section that Jessie ran a gym for one D&P episode, and gave out at least one badge to a trainer? Whether or not its considered offical is questionable, and it was not seen, but it should be mentioned that they DID have badges.Spongemaster0 14:16, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

The badge in question, I believe, was 3 of James's bottle caps glued together. I'm Missingno. Master, and I approve this message. 22:52, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Multiple Gyms

I've been watching Pokémon Chronicles lately, and something in the episode where Misty takes over as Gym Leader (Cerulean Blues, I think) seems kinda relevant. The Inspectors that are busy closing down various Gyms across Kanto are reported on the news to have closed down several already. If eight badges are a requirement for entering the Indigo League, there must be at least eight still open after those closures, right? That would seem to imply that there were (prior to that episode) several extra Gyms.

Also, in the games the "Fighting Dojo" is supposed to have had Gym status, and recently lost it. Bearing in mind that Sabrina's Gym has a pretty formidable reputation, I doubt its "brand new", in which case I'd espect the Fighting Dojo and Sabrina's Gym to have run simultaneously, at least for a bit. I know the Dojo was never mentioned in the Anime, but maybe one of Gary's badges (or the other trainers') could be from there, or other similar Gyms that were closed down?

--Aiden Iakona 12:37, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

The anime seems to work pretty clearly under the assumption that there are more than eight gyms in a region. --Pie ~ 17:53, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, in most major regions anyway. Orange Islands was an exception. That made the opposite clear, that there were only four gyms in the islands. --Pie ~ 17:54, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Badge name spacing

I see someone reccently changed the badge names to give them consistant spacing. But a pretty quick video search on YouTube shows me that Boulderbadge and so on was correct, and is still kept in FR/LG.--Porygon 09:38, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, but it's HEAT BADGE and so on in Emerald, so I think that it was always their intention to have spaces, they just didn't have room in RBYGSC and wanted to keep with tradition in RSFRLG. Emerald they spaced and DP they finally turned off caps lock. TTEchidna 10:05, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Actually, RS did use spaces. And FR/LG came out afterward without the spacing. Maybe it was a character limit thing, I'll look through some official uses of the terms when I can and see if they agree with you. I just thought that was worth noting.--Porygon 11:00, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
All I can really say is that we'll know for sure for Johto/Kanto badges with GSDS. Seeing as FRLG was a remake of RB anyway, though... I think they were just keeping with tradition. TTEchidna 09:11, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Weighing in, I think other forms of canon have always put a space between the words, which gives some weight to standardizing them as always spaced. I mean, granted, we usually set game canon as the one true canon, but... also, btw, RSE and FRLG weren't necessarily translated by the same people in the company, which could account for the difference. I wouldn't be surprised if the people translating FRLG were looking back at the generation I data for reference far more than the data for the other generation III games, except maybe to make sure the new items shared the same names. Badges aren't new, so why would they think to check? --Pie ~ 18:00, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Computers versus badges

Does anyone else find it odd that badges/ribbons themselves serve as authentication rather than a computerized system (then again, if badges were simply for decoration and kept track of by computer, we couldn't have "badge theft" episodes)? It seems strange that there's a computerized system for transferring Pokémon over large distances but not a system for keeping track of trainer acheivements. Perhaps a note should be made of that.--Yoshi1001 22:24, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

At one point, just prior to his entry into the Hoenn League Ash goes through the obligatory 'Badge loss' episode and is told that he can still enter due to the records but states that he wouldn't want to without the badges, that losing them would be a major psychological blow. Now whether thats unique to the Hoenn region or not is another matter... Ricohard 03:35, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Stat raising?

Diamond and Pearl 043 Badges

Should we add the badges in the case awarded for Ash in his fantasy in "Malice in Wonderland", or because they were in a fantasy we should ignore them? Gary and Otoshi's Badges

Since Kanto and Johto both have the same league, wouldn't that mean that these extra badges aren't necesarily only from Kanto, but can be from Johto as well. It was proven by Sakura, who was going to the Indigo League, that one does not need to get all eight from only one region, but they can get any ratio of eight throughout the two regions. So, couldn't these be from Johto as well, even though Johto didn't exist when they were seen? MoldyOrange 14:45, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Sakura didn't specify which competition she was entering. As far as we know from Ash's journey, the Kanto badges work at the Indigo Plateau and he needed to collect another eight from Johto before he could enter the Silver Conference. --FabuVinny |Talk Page| 15:19, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Gary's badges

In the section "Gary" of the article it states "This would, therefore, provide one gym for each of the (at the time) fifteen types" Where does this figure of fifteen come from? There were sixteen Pokemon types in Generation I; Dark was the only type not to have any Pokemon named after it (easy to find a Pokemon of each type: Rattata, Machop, Pidgey, Koffing, Sandshrew, Geodude, Caterpie, Gastly, Magnemite, Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Alakazam, Jynx and Dratini for example). If the sentence is referring to only single-types then it would be much less than 15 as there certainly weren't any single-typed Dark, Ice or Steel Pokemon (and maybe more) in Generation I. So I think the sentence is inaccurate. Kidburla 23:05, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Gen1 had fifteen types. Gen2 had 17. IIMarckus 23:08, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
My bad. Steel is the other one. Magnemite changed type in Generation II, and so wasn't Steel-type in Generation I. Kidburla 23:11, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Marsh and Soul and Renaming, oh my!

So, Sabrina's badge was originally going to be the Soul Badge, because Psychickers can peer into your soul... and Koga's badge was going to be the Marsh Badge, because Poisonous fumes come from marshes and such. These were accidentally flipped in the final version, and have stuck even in Gen II and the Gen III remakes. Eevee is not Eon, and Abra is not Hocus. But we still mention that before the official release, Eevee was going to be called Eon and Abra Hocus and Kadabra Pocus and such. Why don't we mention this flip-flop then? Especially considering the fact that it was a mistake, rather than a purposeful decision? Satosuke 01:49, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

We have sources for unused Pokemon names. Do you have any source for the badge naming? Who says that one was supposed to be the other? IIMarckus 01:55, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Not offhand, but I could probably find some. I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in a discussion with NoA or PUSA at some point. Satosuke 02:54, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Please do. IIMarckus 03:06, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
I've always thought this myself. I also wonder if the shapes were switched too, since hearts have more to do with soul than circles, and I guess a double-rimmed circle could vaguely represent some area such as marsh.Captain Skank 16:44, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Polishing...

I don't see that info anywhere... or maybe no one has noticed. You can actually polish your badges in DP (and I think also in Pt) and make them shine. Where should it be put? hfc2X 21:35, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm surprised it's not in the article; it's a pretty fun new aspect to the badges. Oh wait, YES IT IS. Check under Sinnoh League. It's mentioned there. Satosuke 04:49, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Dive

In the trivia it says that Dive "cannot be used or obtained without trading in Kanto." This implies that it can be USED in Kanto, I wasn't aware of this, but if this is not the case, perhaps it could be better phrased as "cannot be obtained without trading or used in Kanto" Sorry if I'm wrong as this is an observation from memories of the game rather than from concrete knowledge. - Gastly's Mama

More than eight gyms...

Boulder Badge File:Boulderbadge.png Pewter City Flash 10 Attack Brock
Flint
Lola
Forrest
Cascade Badge File:Cascadebadge.png Cerulean City Cut 30 None Misty
Daisy
Violet
Lily
Something like that, just... well, prettier... --Mr. Charlie 17:29, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

It's certainly more easy on the eyes. The only problem is that every badge does a combination of HM/Stat/Level, so the listing would have to be adjusted to fit. Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 18:05, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

The idea is to make a single table to include every badge, or at least on table per region. That way al the information would be organized in he same place. I modified the one above to include the Cascade Badge and added a new column to the obeying level for traded Pokémon.
I would do it myself, but I suck at making tables...-- Mr. Charlie 20:21, 23 March 2009
I've tried to make a table, tell me what you think. I've put it in a spoiler because it's kinda big... It still needs links and stuff and I've only made for the Kanto League Badges, but the basic idea is there.

Problem is, with the exception of the ones in the Orange Archipelago, every single gym and badge that's been shown in the anime is one featured in the handheld video games. If such an idea were to be implemented, it would be for the video games, not for the anime. --Shiningpikablu252 19:00, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Badges as mind-control

I seem to recall at least one instance in the Special manga where Pikachu or another Pokemon was at least subtly influenced by the badges. I believe the gym leaders also described them as having the power to control Pokemon, possibly around the Silph Co. battle arc... Does anyone know of a specific instance of this being stated? Redstar 03:04, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

The way I recall it (Though mind you it's been a while isnce I've read the RBG arc), the badges alone don't control Pokémon in Special. But when put in the Badge Energy Amplifier, that's when it is able to control Pokémon within a specific radius.
Yes, that makes more sense. I vaguely recall an instance of Pikachu being manipulated by Red or another person, but it may not have been badge-related or even in the manga. I did find several scans that confirm that badges do in fact manipulate Pokemon to a degree, but whether this is generally or only in conjunction with each other due the BEA is unclear. Suggestion;

"Highest level of obeying Pokémon: N/A" Instead of N/A, wouldn't it make more sense to use the same level as the previous one? It's not like the privilege of the obeying Pokemon is taken away.. It doesn't say it gives that level, it just says that it's the highest level of obeying Pokemon.. Consider it? >.> --♪ Jason Tong ♪ 21:59, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

For future reference, in case anyone brings this point up again, this suggestion doesn't work on one major principle: the obedience of the traded pokémon is directly controlled by the badged a player has. Meaning, if I skipped Sabrina (whose badge grants obedience to pokémon up to level 70) leaving me with only obedience at level 50 (Rainbow Badge), then if I went to fight Blaine (whose order is after Sabrina), my traded pokémon would still stop obeying me once it reached level 51 despite having a superior badge from a trainer stronger than Sabrina. Without the Marsh badge, they will still disobey. These are the abilities granted by a gym badge itself, not simply something that happens with a certain amount of gyms defeated. Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 20:01, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Two badges not mentioned

There are two known badges not mentioned, though they aren't gym badges they still connect to the Pokemon League in the anime. One badge is the Exam badge that works like all 8 would normally. It was shown in an episode and looks like a red boulder badge with a giant P in the middle. The second badge missing is the one giving to Ash when the Pokemon League ended after his loss to Richie.--Lycos Ex Mortis 05:06, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Gary and other ideas

Part of the article I have ideas about improving: Gary Oak acquired more than the standard eight Kanto League badges, thus leading to confusion as to whether or not there is an infinite number of badges that can be given out in a given region. By The Battle of the Badge, he is shown to have at least ten badges, only 3 of which correspond to known Kanto league badges, suggesting there are at least fifteen gyms in Kanto. This would, therefore, provide one gym for each of the (at the time) fifteen types. Among these may include the Fighting Dojo, a gym shown to be defunct by Pokémon Red and Blue.

When I first saw the anime episode which is described in this section of the article ( I saw the episode long before I ever read this article) I immediatly thought that Gary recived the badges from other regions (possibly regions that are still unknown as of today) and that the Pokemon League (at least in Kanto) did not care which badges you have as long as you have 8. Also on the subject of more than 8 gym badges in Kanto, there were examples of cites in anime (in Kanto) which were not in the games (such as the city in which Ash got his Muk, if I not mistaken)leading a viewer to believe that there could be many more cities (and gym badges) in the region. I would be glad to hear input from others on these ideas (and people to confirm I am making correct episode references)and if anybody thinks any of these ideas deserve to go in the article.Tough_guy22 19:25, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

You mean everything except the first few paragraphs in the In the anime section? Werdnae (talk) 00:30, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Please clairify, im not quite sure what your question is. Tough_guy22 19:25, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Nevermind, I misread your post. It has been implied in the anime that the badges only work in one region (as Ash must collect 8 new badges in each region, although this didn't happen until a bit after that episode), and so others must have come from gyms and cities not in the games. Maybe it should be summarised in a paragraph in the section before it turns into a big list with no introduction? Werdnae (talk) 01:13, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
I think the reason I thought that Gary's badges were from a different region was largly because of the fact that the episode took place in Viridan city, which as we know is connected to the walking route that goes to and from Johto. Would you agree with me that the fact that there are "anime only" cities should be mentioned in the article as a possible reason for there being more that 8 Kanto badges?? (Tough guy22 02:34, 27 May 2010 (UTC))
Yes, it probably should. What should also be mentioned it that there are badges in the anime that aren't in the games (and I mean it should be mentioned outside the character subsections), and that there is thought to be a gym for each type in every region, due to the number of different badges. At the moment it just talks about the badges and then launches into sections for each character. I feel that it looks a little out of place, and the character sections need an introduction of sorts to explain them. That introduction would be the perfect place for this stuff. Werdnae (talk) 02:48, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
The character Gary is protrayed to be likely would have fought the harder gyms if there were in fact 15 gyms in Kanto. Whereas Ash simiply fought the gyms in the cities he went to. It is possible that with Gary being related to Professor Oak he knew more about where stuff is and more cities (as Professor Oak supposedly traveled all over when he was young). Are you good enough that you could change the article, or do you know somebody who is kinda "in charge" of this article??? (Tough guy22 02:56, 27 May 2010 (UTC))
As far as I know there isn't anyone "in charge" of this article. I've got something I need to do just now, so it'll be a bit more than an hour until I can get to it. You can try editing it if you like. I'm sure once an edit is made to the article everyone watching the recent changes will come along and help. Or you could post it here and get opinions. Werdnae (talk) 04:30, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Okay, i've rearranged the section and extended a paragraph to include some of that stuff. I haven't included that Gary may have deliberately chosen harder gyms, or known where the harder gyms were from Professor Oak, as that falls under the speculation category and speculation is (generally) not allowed. I've put in what I think works without becoming speculation and left the rest out. Modify it if you don't like it. Werdnae (talk) 06:07, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
