Braviary (Japanese: ウォーグル Warrgle) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Rufflet starting at level 54.

Biology

Physiology

Braviary is an eagle-like Pokémon. Its face and underside are a navy blue, while its back and the dorsal side of its wings are dark red. It has a bright blue cere above its yellow beak, from which extends a red, three-pointed crest. White plumes sprout from each point of the crest, and similar feathers are present on the sides of Braviary's face. Along with the feathery "mane" on the back of its head and neck, these features resemble a Native American war bonnet. Braviary's legs are feathered down to its feet, ending in spiky feathers on the upper portions of Braviary's large yellow talons. These powerful claws are tipped with black nails. Its tail feathers are mainly red, with a blue tip and a yellow subterminal band.

Gender differences

Braviary is a male-only species. Its female counterpart is Mandibuzz; however, Mandibuzz cannot produce Rufflet eggs.

Special abilities

Braviary, like most other bird-like Pokémon, learn a multitude of wind-based moves, as well as many aerial attacks. They are uncommonly strong, and can easily fly while gripping an automobile in its talons. Their agility and gracefulness in flight is truly a spectacle to behold.

Behavior

Heedless of danger, Braviary fights fearlessly and relentlessly. They are very courageous, as evidenced by its species name as the "Valiant Pokémon". They also seem to have a strong flock dynamic, fighting without pause to protect their friends and family. It is said that the more wounds it has, the more respect it gets from its comrades.

Habitat

Braviary live in rugged, mountainous habitat and around gorges. They are also found in areas by water.

Trivia

  • Braviary, along with Throh, Sawk, Tauros, and the Hitmons, is one of the few gendered non-legendary Pokémon naturally occurring in the wild that cannot reproduce without a Ditto.
    • Like Tauros, it has a female counterpart that is unable to produce eggs of its species.

Origin

Braviary is based on an eagle, specifically a Bald Eagle. It also has feathers on its head that resemble a war bonnet and the crest of a Philippine Eagle. Its color scheme and basis suggest it is inspired by the United States of America, the flag of which is red, white, and blue and the national symbol of which is the bald eagle. It also resembles a Native American warrior.

Name origin

Braviary is derived from "bravery" and "aviary". It may also come from "brave", a term used to refer to Native American warriors. Warrgle is derived from war or warrior and eagle, and possibly warble, a sound a bird makes.
