Lileep (Japanese: リリーラ Lilyla) is a dual-type Rock/Grass fossil Pokémon.

It is resurrected from a Root Fossil and then evolves into Cradily starting at level 40.

Biology

Physiology

Lileep has eight petal-like pink tentacles protruding from the opening on its upper body. The cup-shaped body has a set of yellow circular patterns on it resembling eyes; however, its true eyes, which are yellow, lie within the darkness of the opening (similar to Kabuto). The upper portion of Lileep's body is connected to its lower by means of a yellow-colored stem, extending from a semi-spherical base that has four 'roots' to anchor Lileep to the ground. One of these "roots" eventually become the fossil that Lileep is resurrected from. Lileep is a fossil Pokémon no longer found in the wild, and must be resurrected from a Root Fossil.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Behavior

Lileep leads a very simple life for a predator Pokémon. Its body remains immobile at all times, anchored to a rock on a seafloor to catch its food, and only moving its mouth to catch its prey. From its immobile perch, it will intently scan for its prey with its two eyes. It will occasionally move its tentacles to grip objects or lure prey. Lileep's prey is attracted to Lileep's tentacles, since it disguises them as seaweed by swaying them slowly. When prey comes near, it is swallowed whole by Lileep's massive mouth.

Habitat

The exact habitat of Lileep is unknown but Root Fossils from which this Pokémon is resurrected from are found in the Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. Their original habitats were probably on the seafloor at some point. This is supported in the Mystery Dungeon series where they are found in the wild on a deep seafloor and a cave connected to the ocean.

Trivia

  • Despite being the Sea Lily Pokémon, and being confirmed to live in water, Lileep is not a Water-type Pokémon. It shares this trait with its evolution Cradily, and its fossil counterparts Anorith and Armaldo.
  • Lileep is the only Grass-type Pokémon in the purple color group.
  • Despite being the two types with the most weaknesses, Grass and Rock, it has only four weaknesses.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

It may be based on crinoids, or sea lilies, marine animals related to seastars, which were once believed to be extinct.

Name origin

Lileep's name may be a combined form of lily and peep, seeing as it seems to peep out from the darkness. The "-eep" could also stand for deep, coming from the depths of the ocean floor, or sleep, as they have been sleeping as fossils for over one hundred million years.

Lilyla is likely a play on the word lily.
