Qwilfish (Japanese: ハリーセン Harysen) is a dual-type Water/Poison Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Qwilfish is a small, round fish Pokémon covered in many sharp spikes. These spikes are derived from its scales. It has a paddle-shaped tail which is about half of its body length. The top of its body is a bluish color, while its underbelly is a pale cream color.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
The spines that cover its body are filled with a toxin which is known to cause fainting. It is able to fire these spines from its body by swallowing large amounts of water. This ability also makes this Pokémon appear bigger than it actually is, making it less vulnerable to predator attacks.

Trivia
- Qwilfish is compatible with the Generation III move tutor for Swords Dance, but is incompatible with the TM in Generation IV that teaches the same move.
- Likewise, it is compatible with the Generation IV TM that teaches Explosion, but incompatible with the Generation III move tutor for the same move.
- Qwilfish shares the same species name with Jigglypuff's evolutionary family and Drifloon. They are all known as the Balloon Pokémon.
- It is also the only Balloon Pokémon not involved in evolution.
- Qwilfish's Japanese name (Harysen) is similar to the name of the Trainer Harrison, who, coincidentally, owns a Qwilfish.
- Qwilfish's Gold and Silver sprites have significantly more green compared to all the sprites, including Crystal's sprites.
- Qwilfish, along with Munchlax, are the only Pokémon who learn Stockpile by leveling up, but do not learn both Swallow and Spit Up, respectively.
- Coincidentally, they learn Stockpile at the same level: 25.
- Qwilfish's tail is shorter in Generation II than the following generations, as seen in its backsprite.
- In The Official Pokémon Handbook 3, published by Scholastic Corporation, Qwilfish is once misspelled as "Qwillfish".
- Another misspelling, "Quilfish", is especially common among fans.
- Its Generation III front sprite and Generation IV backsprite show it in the same pose. Likewise, a different pose is shown in both its Generation IV front sprite and Generation III backsprite.
- Despite being constantly referred to as a bad swimmer in the Pokédex, Qwilfish is able to learn the move Surf.
Origin
It is based on the Pufferfish and possibly a Naval mine.
Name origin
Qwilfish's name is a combination of a misspelled quill and fish. Its Japanese name could be a contraction of 針千本 harisenbon, porcupinefish.
An early version of Qwilfish was called Bukū, which is probably a corruption of 河豚 fugu, pufferfish.
