Magmar (Japanese: ブーバー Boober) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Magby starting at level 30, and evolves into Magmortar when traded holding a Magmarizer.

Biology

Physiology

Magmar is a Pokémon with a human-like stance that has traits of a duck and a mythical salamander. Magmar has a red body with a yellow flame design on it. It has a yellow tail that has a flame on it. Magmar has yellow thighs, black legs and red feet with two toes each. Magmar's arms are covered in red, rigid scales and it has red hands with five fingers. Magmar has a row of red spikes running down its back. Magmar has two lumps on its forehead with a flame on top of each one, and a yellow beak.

Due to Magmar's tail-flame and partial-reptilian appearance, it has been considered to be a distant cousin of the Charmander-line.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Magmar can spit powerful flames from its mouth that can incinerate nearly all of its surroundings. It can also create smoke-based attacks such as Smog and Lava Plume. It is also able to use physical attacks such as Cross Chop, Mega Punch and Fire Punch effectively. Magmar is able to survive in extreme conditions such as lava in a volcano.

Despite not being fully-evolved, Magmar is capable of using Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Behavior

Whenever a Magmar is faced with being in an environment that it finds too cold, it will spew out flames to warm up the surrounding area. Also, according to Giovanni, they are "Savage and intelligent".

Habitat

Magmar prefer environments that are very hot, such as volcanoes. Kanto, Johto and Sinnoh are the best places that offer such habitats to these Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Magmar is one of four Pokémon to receive both a pre-evolution and new evolution in generations after its release. The other three are Chansey, Electabuzz, and Roselia.
    • It is also one of five Pokémon, that didn't had any evolutionary relatives in generation they were introduced in, but now are part of three-stage evolutionary line. The other four are previously mentioned three and Porygon (while all other four Pokémon got both evolution and pre-evolution, Porygon got two evolutions).
  • Magmar and Electabuzz seem to be counterparts; both evolve in a very similar way (first at level 30, then after being traded holding an "-izer" item), and both are typically exclusive to one version of a pair of games. They also learn all their moves at the same levels, such as Fire Punch and ThunderPunch at level 28. They even have the same special move when purified from Pokémon XD: Follow Me. Their pre-evolutions and evolutions were released in the same generation. Additionally, their Japanese names are essentially phonetic reversals of each other.
  • In all games within Generation IV that Magmar can be caught in the wild, Magmar can be caught at levels lower than it evolves.

Origin

Magmar seems to be a combination of a duck or booby with a mythical salamander of fire. However, the tail and the spikes on its back resemble those of an iguana. It could also be based on a Karura.

Name origin

Magmar's name may just be a corruption of the word magma, intrusive molten rock, but may also involve the word mar, referring to the incineration of its surroundings to suit its own needs. Its Japanese name might be a corruption of booby, a type of sea bird.
