In the anime
Dewford Gym first appeared in Brave the Wave. Brock, May and Max are woken up by Ash so that he can battle Brawly. However when they reach the gym they find Brawly at surfing practice. He tells them he will battle Ash later.
When Brawly finally does begin the battle, Ash is thoroughly annoyed. The battle is a two Pokémon each, no time limit rule battle. Ash sends out Taillow which is defeated by Brawly's Machop. Treecko then defeats the Machop, before in turn being beaten by Brawly's Makuhita which evolves into Hariyama during the battle. Ash is disheartened by this defeat, but Brawly encourages him to go on.
Trivia
- In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the wall behind the right-hand statue behaves like a statue: when approached, and the A-button is pressed, it says: "DEWFORD POKéMON GYM, BRAWLY'S CERTIFIED TRAINERS:". After Brawly is defeated, it will list the player as a certified trainer. This was removed in Pokémon Emerald.
- While the number of gym trainers nearly doubles in Emerald, the total number of Pokémon only increases by one.
