Softboiled (Japanese: タマゴうみ Egg Lay) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. In Generation I, as it was contained in TM41, it made TM41 the least-usable TM, only able to be used on two Pokémon, one of those being Mew. It is the signature move of Chansey and Blissey.

Effect

In battle

Generation I

Softboiled restores up to 50% of the user's current HP.

Softboiled will fail if the difference between the user's current and maximum HP is 0, or if (user's maximum HP - user's current HP) mod 256 = 255. If the user's current HP is greater than its maximum HP, Softboiled will set the user's current HP to equal its maximum HP.

In Stadium, Softboiled will fail only when the difference between the user's current and maximum HP is 0.

Generation II onward

Softboiled restores up to 50% of the user's current HP. Softboiled will fail only when the difference between the user's current and maximum HP is 0.

Outside of battle

Similar to Milk Drink, Softboiled can also be used outside of battle to take away some HP from the user and restore another party Pokémon's HP.

Trivia

  • Mew is the only non-Normal-type to learn Softboiled, and can only learn it by TM or Move Tutor.
  • Clefairy and Clefable are capable of learning Softboiled via Move Tutor in Generation III, but are incompatible with the TM in Generation I.
  • Although Softboiled is available in Pokémon Emerald as a Move Tutor move, all Pokémon able to be tutored the move must either be traded into the game from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen or caught using an event item.
  • Male Pokémon can use this move despite its Japanese name being "Egg Lay".
  • In Generation III, if this move is used immediately after Brick Break, the Egg that appears will be transparent rather than solid. This doesn't affect the execution of the move, however.
