The Fairy type (Japanese: フェアリータイプ Fairy type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers that specialize in the Fairy type include Valerie of Laverre City.

The Fairy type was introduced in Generation VI. As well as introducing new Pokémon with the Fairy type, a handful of Pokémon including Jigglypuff, Marill, Gardevoir, and Mawile were retconned to be Fairy-type.

Characteristics

Defense

The Fairy type is extremely useful defensively. It has key resistances to the common Dark and Fighting types, as well as the less seen Bug type and immunity to the mostly useful Dragon type. Its only weaknesses are to the otherwise rare attacking types, Poison and Steel.

Offense

Fairy is also useful for having three strengths, being Dragon, Fighting and Dark. However, it also has three resistors and all three are common. It is key to note that the Fairy type was added to balance out the overused Dragon type and the underused Poison type, earning its use in the meta game.

Trivia

  • As the Fairy type was introduced after physical and special became attributes assigned to individual moves rather than types, it is the only type without an associated damage category.
  • Out of the three types that have been added since Generation I (the other two being Dark and Steel in Generation II), more Pokémon were retroactively changed to Fairy, with 23.
    • It is also the only one out of the three to completely change the types of Pokémon from previous generations; changing several previously Normal type Pokémon to Fairy (such as Snubbull).
