May's Wartortle (Japanese: ハルカのカメール Haruka's Kameil) was the first Pokémon that May obtained in the Kanto region, and her sixth overall. She received it from Professor Oak.

History
Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire
After leaving her Beautifly and Skitty in Hoenn, May met up with Ash in Pallet Town, where one of Professor Oak's Squirtle took a liking to her. When it did not want to go in Professor Oak's Poké Ball, he allowed it to travel with May, so it went in her Poké Ball instead.
In On Cloud Arcanine, May used Squirtle in a battle against Drew to see which of them would get to catch an Arcanine. Due to still being young and inexperienced, Squirtle struggled to deal any lasting damage against Flygon and ended up in tears after being hit by a few Steel Wings.
May quickly introduced it to Pokémon Contests, where it adapted well. It was first used in the Battle Stage of the Saffron Contest in A Hurdle for Squirtle, where it defeated a Trainer's Crobat and Weepinbell to advance to the finals against Harley and his Ariados. Ariados gained a strong lead with String Shot and Spider Web to cover the stage and ensnare Squirtle. When all hope seemed lost, May had Squirtle use Ice Beam to freeze the webs and regain momentum. It rode the frozen webs and finished the battle with a powerful Tackle, which was its first major accomplishment on May's team.
In Weekend Warrior, May was still deciding which Pokémon to use in the upcoming Silver Town Pokémon Contest. She sent out Squirtle, but she was not very satisfied with how it came out of its Poké Ball as she needed its entrance to be flashier. Squirtle took May's comments to heart and disappeared from her sight for a little while, only to return using accessories made out of flowers to look more appealing and impress its Trainer. May reassured Squirtle that it would always look cute in her eyes, and when the Silver Contest got underway, she used it in the Appeals Round. Squirtle began by using Ice Beam while spinning around and then proceeded to use Bubble, creating one large bubble surrounded by several smaller ones. After that, it jumped on the large bubble and used its Ice Beam to destroy the surrounding bubbles and used Ice Beam once more, this time aiming on the large bubble. The splash resulting from the explosion was frozen solid, creating several ice pillars, and Squirtle finished by posing atop one of them. The performance impressed the judges and placed May among the four Coordinators moving on to the Contest Battles.
In Time Warp Heals All Wounds, Squirtle, May, and Team Rocket overheard Edna's tragic backstory and how she lost her husband, Jonathan, in the past. Squirtle later found Edna's lost locket, which emitted a mysterious light and enveloped the three. They soon realized they'd been transported back in time to when Edna's husband was about to make his departure. Working together, they delayed the train long enough for Edna to catch up to Jonathan and stop him from leaving. They then returned to the present and, due to their actions, found the couple living happily together.
In Harley Rides Again, Squirtle was used in the first round of the Wisteria Contest. Its performance started with using Rapid Spin to spin rapidly across the stage. It proceeded with a Bubble attack, making a spiral of bubbles while still spinning around. After that, it used its Ice Beam to destroy the bubbles and create a frozen fountain. It received positive reviews from all three judges, advancing May to the second round.
In What I Did for Love!, Squirtle was used in the appeal round of the Gardenia Town Pokémon Contest. It used Rapid Spin to create waves of dust, followed up with Bubble to create a tall pyramid before using Ice Beam to freeze the structure, ending with a strong appeal.
In Going for Choke!, Squirtle participated in the Mulberry Contest. It won a match against a Trainer's Skarmory by points and later went up against Jessie, who was borrowing Harley's Banette. Squirtle hid in its shell with Withdraw and Rapid Spin to avoid taking too much damage while bouncing around the stadium to find an opening to strike. When the timer ran out, both sides were tied, and they continued into sudden death. Squirtle ended up winning by freezing Banette and knocking it down with Tackle.
In Thinning the Hoard!, Squirtle was used in a two-on-two Contest Battle alongside May's Combusken against Drew's Absol and Flygon in the quarterfinals of the Kanto Grand Festival. Its various attacks were vital to May, the two most important aspects coming from Bubble to provide the water half of a Fire and Water combination attack and knocking Flygon out with a super-effective Ice Beam. After Squirtle defeated Flygon, Drew's Absol would defeat Squirtle in turn, leaving the battle to a one-on-one battle between Combusken and Absol.
Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl
In Staging a Heroes' Welcome!, Squirtle was revealed to have evolved into a Wartortle during May's travels through Johto. It was used in the Performance Stage of the Wallace Cup. Wartortle was sent out with a Foamy Seal and began by using Rapid Spin on the water field before finishing with its newly learned Aqua Tail. The performance was good enough to advance May to the next round.
Personality and characteristics
While it was a Squirtle, Wartortle demonstrated a personality that was distinct from Ash's Squirtle, as it is much younger and smaller, mainly because it was intended to be a starter Pokémon. It was also relatively shy and was a bit of a crybaby. However, as time passed, it grew considerably as it started to cry less. As a Wartortle, it's shown a more boisterous attitude with no signs of the tears that defined it as a Squirtle. Squirtle has a love for flowers and would often disappear to find some it could admire.
Squirtle took an instant liking to May, feeling safe with her when it got scared by Max and ran away from him in its debut episode. Also, upon witnessing May's courage and compassion during an attack from Team Rocket, Squirtle chose her to be its Trainer. Squirtle quickly adapted well to Pokémon Contests and showed a natural talent for them, with the result that May would usually use it for her Contest Appeals.
