Lucius (Japanese: ルシアス Lucius), also known as the Ancient Adventurer (Japanese: いにしえの冒険者 Ancient Adventurer), is a recurring character in Pokémon Horizons: The Series. He is the main reason Roy wanted to become a Trainer, and the truth behind his legend serves as one of his motivations.

History

Lucius meeting his Pokémon partners in Alex's books

The Ancient Adventurer was first mentioned by Roy when describing his feats to Liko in The Treasure After the Storm!. According to him, the Ancient Adventurer traveled through different regions and captured several Legendary Pokémon and treasures around the world. A group of his friends came to be collectively known as the Explorers.

He briefly appeared in a fantasy in The Ancient Poké Ball when Roy told his grandfather about his dreams.

Photograph of Lucius

In The Future I Choose, just after the Rising Volt Tacklers helped restore a forest that had been destroyed by a wildfire, the Pokémon in Liko's pendant came to life. With Arboliva's assistance, the Pokémon showed Liko and Roy a vision of the past where Lucius asked Arboliva to look for something. Later, Liko and Roy read a book by Liko's father that told the history of Lucius's adventures, based on stories told by Liko's grandmother Diana.

Lucius appeared again in a vision for Liko, Roy, and Friede in Fiery Galarian Moltres. This time, the mysterious adventurer was seen talking to Moltres about achieving something called "Lakua". In the next episode, Diana revealed that she found a diary in her childhood with memories of Lucius's adventures. She also revealed that Lakua is the name of the paradise that Lucius was looking for and that at some point Terapagos was with Lucius on this journey.

In Terapagos's Adventure!, Diana showed Liko a photograph of Lucius. She also took advantage and gave her Lucius' belt where he carried his former companions' Poké Ball.

In HZ032, Lucius appeared in another flashback, this time showing the Ancient Adventurer at the entrance to Lakua and saying goodbye to his former companions.

Character

Although much of Lucius is based on legend and myth, his deeds have resonated for years. During the flashbacks in which he was seen, it was shown that Lucius has a deep connection with his Pokémon.

In HZ045, it was suggested that Gibeon has some sort of connection to Lucius, but the extent of this has not been fully shown yet.

Pokémon

Lucius's belt

A hundred years ago, Lucius traveled with the Black Rayquaza and five Pokémon he encountered throughout the various regions he traveled, working towards a single goal. Collectively, they are known as the Six Heroes (Japanese: 六英雄 Six Heroes), and each of them had a specific purpose. In an as-yet-unexplained way, Lucius's Poké Balls have been scattered around the world.

Lucius kept all his Pokémon in Ancient Poké Balls.

In Reunion at the Ancient Castle!, Diana revealed that Terapagos traveled with Lucius at some point in his journey.

Terapagos appear to have met at least four of the Six Heroes at some point; Arboliva, Moltres, Lapras, and Rayquaza and is also implied to wish to see Lucius again in Lakua. Unlike the others however, it was is not a member of the Six Heroes and didn't seem to have ever been caught in one of Lucius's Ancient Poké Balls, making the full details of their relationship still a mystery.

Trivia

  • Lucius is the first character in the anime to have officially owned a Shiny Legendary Pokémon.
