Lucario (Japanese: ルカリオ Lucario) is a Fighting/Steel-type Pokémon.

Name origin

Lucario's name is a corrupted version of the Portuguese word oráculo spelt backwards.

This Pokémon is often referred to as Rukario. While this is correct as a basic Hepburn romanization, it is not used by any official sources.

Lucario appears to be based on the Egyptian god Anubis, who has the head of a jackal. The black appendages on the back of its head are used to detect the auras of creatures and objects around it. While Lucario reads aura, it closes its eyes, and thus the appendages and the way they look "tied" around its face appear to be based on someone being blindfolded.

Additional information

In the Pokémon movie "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew", the jackal-like Pokémon is considered a legend from olden times to the town where it appears in front of Ash and Co.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Lucario is seen as the greatest rescue leader of all time and his adventures have become legendary. While the player never meets Lucario, Alakazam tells the player that his goal is to become closer to Lucario's greatness. Earning 150,000 Rescue Points will put the player in the top rank - the Lucario rank - at which point the Lucario statue will be displayed outside the rescue base.
