Blue from Generation I

Blue (Japanese: グリーン Green), is the grandson of Professor Oak and is the main character's rival in the Generation I games as well as their Generation III remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Blue becomes the Pokémon Champion but is quickly defeated by Red/Leaf, the player's character. In the Generation II games, he becomes the somber Gym Leader of Viridian City's Gym, known officially as the Viridian Gym, notable for being the only Gym Leader in the games to not focus on one specific type. He hands out the Earth Badge to Trainers who defeat him. He often goes out of Viridian City, which causes problems for challenging Trainers, as he's rarely found in his Gym.

Blue is differentiated from Red/Leaf by Professor Oak's notion at the end of the Generation I games and Generation III remakes that Red/Leaf cares for Pokémon better than Blue does. This is also evident as Blue leaves the Silph Co. building while it's still under Team Rocket's control, leaving Red/Leaf to take out Giovanni.

He is notable for being cocky and arrogant whenever the player's character encounters him; after losing, his typical way to bid goodbye is "Smell ya later!"

Blue will evolve his Eevee into either Flareon, Vaporeon or Jolteon depending on the result of his battles against the player.

• Jolteon: The player defeats Blue at both Prof. Oak's lab and Route 22.
• Vaporeon: Blue defeats the player at Prof. Oak's lab. Either Blue defeats the player or the player skips the battle at Route 22.

Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal

In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Blue is the sixteenth (and final) Gym Leader. He is the eighth Gym Leader in Kanto, replacing Giovanni. He is the only Gym Leader to not use a specific type. Blue's name is Rival in this game. His team depends on which version the player has plugged in, and which starter Pokémon was chosen in that version. If there is no game inserted, he will always have the team in Case 1.

Trivia

• Gary Oak from the anime was designed after Blue. Furthermore, Gary's name comes from one of the optional names for Blue. Despite this, they are not the same character, not even in Pokémon Yellow.
• Blue is the only Champion who is the player's rival. He is also the only Champion that the player has battled before, as well as the only Champion who does not induct the player character into the Hall of Fame (Prof. Oak does it instead).
• He is the only League Champion thus far who changes his party after the player gets the National Dex.
• Blue is the only Champion to date who can battle with an Electric Pokémon.
• It is a mystery who Blue's predecessor as Champion was, or even if he had one.
• Blue is the only Gym Leader not to have a type theme.
• His team as Gym Leader from Generation II is based on his team as Champion from Generation I without his starter Pokémon (instead taking whichever Pokémon it takes the place of in his other teams).
• Blue is the single character with the most sprites in-battle, having ten total, due to his sprite changing as the player progresses through the game. In Generation III, he also has a sprite not used in-battle, but at the beginning of the game, therefore, he has 11 sprites and with the release of HeartGold and SoulSilver, a 12th sprite is guarenteed.
• In Generation I, Blue has the distinction of being both the very first and very last Trainer opponent, as other Trainers were not able to be rebattled until Generation II.
• Blue is one of only two NPCs who has been both a Gym Leader and a champion. The other is Wallace (though Wallace was a Gym Leader before becoming Champion, and Blue does the reverse), both being the eighth Gym Leader.
  • Interestingly, they are also the only champions who do not own a pseudo-legendary, although Blue eventually gains a Tyranitar.
• In the Japanese version, each Japanese game has at least one one of his default names derived from key people in the Pokémon franchise.
  • In Red, Yellow and FireRed, it is シゲル Shigeru, derived from Shigeru Miyamoto who pitched the franchise into the company
  • In Green and LeafGreen, it is サトシ Satoshi, derived from Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of the Pokémon franchise.
  • In Yellow, it is ヒロシ Hiroshi, derived from Hiroshi Yamauchi, the head of Nintendo at the time.
  • In FireRed, one of them is ツネカズ Tsunekaz, derived from Tsunekazu Ishihara who was one of the debug players in the original Red & Green versions.
  • In FireRed, another of them is サトル Satoru, derived from Satoru Iwata, the current boss of Nintendo.
  • In LeafGreen, one of them is ケン Ken, derived from Ken Sugimori, art director, designer and illustrator of the both games.
